Chapter 10

Author: Shallow Teal
The fight was set for dawn the next day.

Our people crowded around the training ground to watch.

I stood on the dais with my father. Emma pressed against me, clutching my skirt in her little hand.

In silver-white armor, Derek gave the three men a cold, mocking look. "One at a time, or all together?"

Lucas scowled and charged first.

Flames from his dragon breath coiled around his sword as he swung at Derek.

Derek dodged and leaped into the air.

Darian hurled lightning at him from the left. Farther back, Silas murmured a prayer. He shaped ice crystals into long arrows and sent them flying.

Derek calmly summoned a heavy shield and met every attack head-on.

Lucas seized the opening. His blade scraped Derek's shoulder armor.

I tensed.

But Derek seemed in no hurry to end the fight. He kept defending himself without striking back.

My anxiety grew. Emma tugged at my hand, tears streaming down her face. "Mommy, they're hurting Daddy!"

She was too young to understand the fight.

All she knew was that three men kept attacking her father, and he wasn't fighting back.

Frowning, I braced a hand against my lower back and walked down from the dais. I worried that fighting after such a long flight would unsettle Derek's dragon breath.

He glanced my way.

Then he shifted into dragon form.

A huge silver-white frost dragon rose into the air with a deep, rumbling roar.

His icy breath nearly froze the entire training ground.

Everyone went still under the sheer force of his power.

Apart from my father on the dais, almost no one could stay standing. The pressure forced them to one knee.

Lucas clutched his chest, trying to push himself up with his sword.

Darian and Silas raised their arms against the icy blast. Frost spread rapidly across their skin.

They couldn't hold out much longer.

The fight was over.

With a hand braced against my lower back, I walked toward Derek.

He shifted back, looking a little pale.

I knew he'd done it to end the fight quickly, but shifting so often had unsettled his dragon breath.

Lucas suddenly thrust his sword at him.

"Stop!" I lunged in front of Derek.

Light burst from my palm and snapped Lucas's sword. The broken blade grazed his cheek.

Darian and Silas rushed forward.

"On your knees!" I roared.

My dragon breath swept over them with overwhelming force. All three crashed to their knees on the ice.

I'd never released so much power before.

"Mommy!" Emma ran over from the sidelines and planted herself in front of us.

She spread her arms and glared at the three of them. "Don't you hurt my mommy and daddy!"

Lucas dropped his broken sword. It rang against the ice.

Darian's expression changed. For a moment, he looked lost.

Silas took two hurried steps toward Emma, then dropped to his knees ten feet away, reaching out with a trembling hand.

I understood.

Emma looked like me.

They were probably remembering the girl they'd grown up with.

Derek leaned against my shoulder and gave a small cough. He beckoned to Emma. "Come here, sweetheart. Daddy's all right."

She ran into his arms and buried her face against his chest.

He picked up our daughter and wrapped his other arm around my waist.

Then he gave me a sly look.

I turned to the three men. "Lucas. Darian. Silas."

Lucas looked up as if waking from a dream, his eyes pleading.

I took a deep breath and spoke firmly. "You say you love me, but you couldn't even believe me! You say you're sorry, but you're just feeling sorry for yourselves. You staked your heartscales because you thought I'd take pity on you? Then let me make this clear. I will never give any of you another chance. Not for the rest of my life!"

Darian recoiled.

Still kneeling, Silas called hoarsely, "Evelyn—"

I raised my hand.

The three scales flew from their palms into mine.

In front of everyone, I gently closed my fingers around them.

The scales shattered into dust.

Lucas coughed up blood and reached for the drifting powder. "Evelyn!" he roared. "You can't do this to me. We've known each other for 20 years!"

"Twenty years," I repeated softly. "And you broke your promise on Kassan's very first day here.

"Don't bother my husband or me again."

Derek smiled.

He seemed to enjoy being protected. He leaned closer and rested his head on my shoulder.

I supported him as we walked away. I never looked back.

Three months later, we returned to the north.

After his heartscale was destroyed, Lucas lost his dragon breath. He was expelled from the dragon knights and would never wield a sword again.

Darian's lightning power turned on him. My father locked him in the lowest level of the dragon crypt, where his own power surged every seven days, tormenting him.

Silas could no longer receive prophecies. After the priests cast him out, he knelt outside the court for three days before the guards finally dragged him away.

My father told me all this in a letter.

I wasn't interested. I wrote back and asked him not to tell me about them again.

After putting our sleeping little girl to bed, Derek came up behind me and wrapped his arms around me.

He was so warm.

After a long time, he said, "They followed us to the northern checkpoint."

"Mm." I leaned against him and stayed still, my eyes closed.

"Do you want to see them?" He smoothed the hair beside my ear, his breath warm against my skin.

"No." I shook my head and smiled. "My husband gets jealous. If I saw them, he'd probably start another fight."

He laughed and rested his hand on my belly. "Always looking out for me."

I turned and wrapped my arms around his waist again.

Outside, wind and snow howled past the windows.

But inside, everything was warm.

There would be no more false knights in my world. Only someone who truly loved me.

Lucas sounded so hoarse I barely recognized his voice. The once-glorious commander of the dragon knights was gaunt now, no longer the strong, imposing figure I remembered.Darian followed him. His old contempt was gone. Dark circles shadowed his eyes, and his lightning power surged wildly beneath his skin.Silas's gaze was as gentle as ever, but he was pale and seemed worn down by constant exhaustion. All three stared at my rounded belly and froze."You're... pregnant?" Darian whispered, as if he'd been struck."Yes." I nodded. "This is my husband, Derek."Derek put an arm around my shoulders and frowned at them.No one spoke. The air seemed to freeze. Then Lucas dropped to one knee.He held out a scarlet scale in his palm. "Evelyn, I was a fool. I broke my promise. I failed you. I... please, give me another chance."Darian knelt, too. "I've regretted it every day since. Evelyn, please. At least accept my scale—"Silas said nothing. He just looked at me, devastated.Derek shifted to st

So much could change in five years. The northern wind and snow hadn't broken me. They'd made me into someone new.Five years after I left, Derek and I brought our daughter, Emma Frostborne, to the Golden Crown Court to visit my father.I wore a long silver-white cloak and a crown of ice crystals.Color had returned to my once-pale face, and the timidity in my eyes was gone. I was older now, calmer and more confident. When I stepped out of the carriage, the court guards dropped to their knees. It wasn't because I was a princess. They felt the deep, powerful dragon breath of the frost dragon chief's wife.Everything at the Golden Crown Court seemed unchanged.I rested a hand on my rounded belly. The little one inside gave me a small kick."Mommy, it's so big. Bigger than home." Emma tipped her face up and looked around, her pale gray eyes full of curiosity. She had Derek's long silver hair, but she looked like me.Derek shifted into human form beside me and rested a hand against my lower

The study door closed with a heavy thud.Lucas, Darian, and Silas stood in the middle of the room, watching Aldric slowly take his seat.Lucas spoke first. "Your Majesty, we only want to know which princess has gone north to get married."Aldric raised a hand, cutting him off.The three men exchanged uncertain looks.Silas stepped forward. "Your Majesty, we hadn't heard about any marriage. We've been looking for Evelyn all morning—""Evelyn?" Aldric gave a bitter smile, his voice hardening. "So you still remember her! Unfortunately for you, she's already boarded the carriage to the north."Darian went deathly pale.He took a hurried step forward. "Your Majesty! She's in no condition to go north!""It was her choice!" Aldric cut in, glaring at him. "She insisted on leaving! She said she couldn't bear another day here. I asked why. She wouldn't tell me. But I suspect you know better than I do."Silas flushed, then paled. "Your Majesty, we—"Aldric picked up a box from his desk and tossed

By the time they reached the square, a crowd had gathered.Their hearts pounded in their throats. The dragon knights hadn't been ordered to provide an escort. The king's closest courtiers had heard no rumors. No one had asked the priests to offer wedding prayers. This wedding seemed to have come out of nowhere. It was all too strange, too sudden. They couldn't make sense of it.They scanned the crowd for Evelyn, desperate for a glimpse of her. Perhaps she'd come to watch, too.Aldric stood alone on the dais in the center of the square.A silver-white frost dragon circled above him. A carriage of the same color waited nearby.Maids were helping a slender figure in a wedding gown into the carriage.A white veil hid her face. She moved slowly, as though every step were a struggle. The frost dragon lowered its head and settled quietly in front of the carriage, waiting for her to take her seat.Lucas's chest tightened. During morning training, Lucas heard that Evelyn had spent a long time in King Aldric Goldcrest's study the night before. He stopped mid-swing.His first thought was that she'd gone to complain about them again. He hurried down the corridor to her chambers.Darian and Silas had just arrived, too. They exchanged a look. Clearly, all three were thinking the same thing.Lucas stepped forward and knocked. The door wasn't locked. It creaked open.Evelyn wasn't there. The room looked empty. Her bed was neatly made, as if no one had slept in it.A faint smell of bitter medicine and blood lingered in the air.Several medicine bottles lay at the foot of the bed.Silas pushed past them and picked one up, sniffing it with a frown. "You're only supposed to take one bottle of this pain medicine at a time. There are at least five or six here."Lucas turned uneasily to Darian.Darian was staring in horror at a dark red bloodstain beside the bed. "Yesterday...""She really was hurt yesterday..." Silas

I spent the next day drifting in and out of sleep. Between my unstable dragon breath and what had happened at the festival, I felt hollowed out. I couldn't even find the strength to pack for the journey north and my new life there. That evening, I dimly heard a knock.I struggled to my feet and opened the door.Kassan stood outside with a bowl of medicine. She looked more like the victim than I did."Princess," she said softly, "I've come to apologize for what Morrie did at the festival yesterday. He didn't know any better."The sight of her made my chest tighten."There's no need," I said. "Please leave."Instead, she put a hand against the door and slipped past me.I frowned and looked her in the eye. "Get out."She turned, staring at my high collar. A strange smile crossed her face. "A dragon's scales are a source of pride, aren't they? Tell me, how much power will you have without this one?"She pulled a long, thin dragon crystal hairpin from her sleeve and drove it into the back o
