Chapter 3

作者: Aetheria
They dropped me at the edge of the Fire Dragon territory. Wave after wave of heat rolled over me.

I glanced back—they were already gone, leaving only their retreating backs in view.

I’d always known they didn’t love me, that they’d never fret over me, but in that moment, it still felt like a blade had been driven clean through my heart.

Tears slid down, only to be scorched dry by the furnace winds.

I waded through magma. The ice armour on my body evaporated, and a suffocating, searing heat swallowed me whole.

My skin went bone dry and itchy, my throat felt like I’d swallowed a handful of razors, and another blast of pain in my gut forced a mouthful of blood past my lips.

The Fire Dragon chieftain stood high above, looking down at me like I was a piece of trash.

“Dare to hurt our little princess? I’ll show your parents exactly what can be done to a precious daughter.”

I smiled, bitter as gall. I wasn’t their precious daughter.

If I died, no one would grieve.

A full day and night passed before I finally hauled myself out of the lava and onto solid ground, delivering the apology gifts to Jessica.

Jessica looked stunned.

“Why you? Not that worthless sister of yours? A mere crippled dragon had the nerve to steal from me.”

“I’m sorry. I’ve come to apologise on her behalf.”

I forced the words from my parched throat, and as I spoke, more coppery sweetness rose up.

In the end, Jessica accepted my apology.

When I left the Fire Dragon territory, I had no ice element to shield me.

The blistering lava washed over me again and again.

By the time I finally set foot on solid land, my wings were burned, my skin sloughing off in rotten layers.

Sharp, blinding agony screamed through my body. I could feel my life force draining away fast.

No one came to meet me. I stared at the empty, desolate expanse around me.

Despair crashed down.

I lifted a hand and touched the fatal scale at my throat—seven days of life, and now barely three remained.

Still, I gritted my teeth through the crippling pain in my wings and flew back to the Dragon Keep.

Morpheus saw me, his eyes filled with guilt.

He took out a small box containing a sapphire ring.

"Noxivira, you... you've suffered so much. Once you're success, we'll get married."

"I'll make it up to you later—I'll have the best doctors treat you."

I took out the ring and was about to put it on.

But at that moment, a hand snatched the ring.

Aithne pouted, slipping the ring onto her own finger.

"This ring is so beautiful! Morpheus……”

I looked at Morpheus, his expression awkward.

"Just let Aithne wear it for a few days—return it to you when you come back."

Feigning deep concern, he still allowed Aithne to snatch my wedding ring right before my eyes.

Clearly, I would never be able to compete with Aithne in his heart.

Perhaps he does love me, but when it comes down to it, he will always choose Aithne first.

I nodded, feeling disgusted, and then left him and headed upstairs.

When mother saw what had become of me, she burst into tears. Father fetched ointments, and the pair of them carefully tended my wounds.

Looking into their worried eyes, I felt a fleeting warmth bloom in my chest.

“How did you get so badly hurt…”

“I just hope it won’t affect the daily test results.”

My heart plunged straight into the abyss. Every word skewered me.

Pain churned in my stomach again. I shoved them away and fled to my chamber.

With red-rimmed eyes, I pushed open the door—and found Aithne sprawled on my nest.

She saw my mangled body and froze for a heartbeat, then burst into unrestrained, gleeful laughter.

"Ugly thing, hahaha. No matter how beautiful you are, with your wings?burned to ruin, Morpheus will never want you again."

“Once you finish my medicine tests, I’ll be blessed by the ice element. I’ll marry Morpheus in your place, and become the Ice Dragon princess instead of you.”

She viciously jammed her finger into one of the wounds on my wing, a hungry, expectant look on her face.

The blue sapphire on that finger was shining with a dazzling light.

I grabbed her arm, shook it off and calmly said,

“Doesn’t matter. He’s yours.”

(Third Person POV)That day, Morpheus sensed something was terribly off with Aithne and quietly followed her.Hiding in the shadows, he watched her make a phone call with that fake doctor just outside the lab.He heard her hiss through clenched teeth, "I told you to torment her, not kill her!""I'll give you a million gold coins. Come back and take the fall for everything..."Morpheus didn’t know how he dragged himself away from that laboratory. All he remembered was that it was the hottest day in a century.By the time he flew back to the Dragon Keep, his ice armour had nearly melted right off him, yet he felt not a lick of pain.He stared at his trembling hands, thinking of that icy corpse he’d just touched.A bone?deep chill. He sat in the corner of Noxivira’s empty chamber, replaying that memory sealed in the ice crystal over and over, his expression twisted with agony. On one hand, a tidal wave of fury at being deceived. On the other, the deceiver was the “little sister” he’d dote

“Elders, the case has already been presented in full, hasn’t it?”The priestess looked slightly perplexed, but nodded.Morpheus acknowledged it, then drew out an ice crystal from within his robes. Trapped inside was a wisp of memory?light.“Then it’s my turn.”“I formally accuse Aithne Vira of illegally operating a medicine?trial research institute, and of premeditated murder of her own sister, Noxivira.”What?!Parents whipped around, staring at him in utter disbelief. But Morpheus didn’t offer a single word of explanation. He crushed the ice crystal in his grip, and the memory?light projected into the air.Inside the image, Aithne’s shrill, piercing voice echoed through the Dragon Keep’s great hall—“…Who told you to kill her!”“I’ll give you a million gold coins. Come back, take the whole rap, and don’t let them trace it to me!”The vision lasted only a few breaths, yet it seemed to freeze time itself.Every gaze in the hall fell upon the ashen?faced white dragon girl standing by th

“I’m calling the Council of Elders.” Morpheus was the first to snap out of it.“NO—!”Aithne instantly went berserk, ignoring the medicament covering the floor and trying to stop him.But she was too late. The call went through.I hovered in mid?air, coldly watching her panic mount. Her voice quavered. “I’m scared. I want to go back.”She tried to bolt, but Morpheus blocked her path.“When you did the texts before, was it like this? What the hell is going on?!”“I… I don’t know.”Aithne’s lips trembled. She collapsed to the floor in a heap.“Noxivira, is it really you? Are you just playing a joke on me…”Morpheus looked utterly broken. He clutched my hand and wailed.“How could she be dead? It was just medicine texts. Aithne went through them loads of times and nothing ever happened…”But I wouldn’t answer him anymore.Once upon a time, I would have wiped away his tears. But now, I could no longer touch them. And I didn’t want to, either. His tears had come far too late.Several elders

There was a pause on the other end, then a laugh.“Are you having a laugh? Noxivira’s strength is beyond question. How could she possibly be dead?”The doctor stared at the stiffening corpse on the operating table, his voice cracking with agitation.“I’m dead serious—her heart has stopped!”Morpheus’s voice drifted through, completely offhand.“Faking it, right? Doesn’t want to do the tests? Don’t let her fool you.”He hung up. The dial tone buzzed. The doctor couldn’t believe it.He rang again and again, but nobody picked up.He looked at my ashen face and smashed his phone in fury.Cursing under his breath, he went next door, grabbed his things, and got the hell out.No one knew that this so-called research lab was nothing but a creation of Aithne. All to maintain a frail image, to keep my parents’ love, to get Morpheus’s treasures. My soul drifted above, watching my own corpse slowly rot.My body began to stiffen, then soften. The ice element surrounding me gradually vanished.I loo

The next day, my parents stared in confusion at the fresh wound on my wing and scolded me.“You’re starting the tests today! How could you be so careless and get hurt again?”Morpheus frowned, his eyes fixed on the wound. “Don’t worry. The doctor has plenty of potions. He’ll get you fixed right up.”I knew I wouldn’t make it through. I was meant to die of life energy draining anyway. When all that’s left is a cold corpse, how would they react?Would they grieve for me? Shed a single tear?I doubt it. When the unwanted one finally goes, they’ll just feel relieved.Sure enough, the moment Aithne appeared, every pair of eyes latched onto her.“Our poor Aithne finally has hope!”“You’re going to get better. You’ll be another princess of the Ice Dragon clan. Let’s have a grand feast to celebrate later.”Morpheus tenderly stroked her head.“Once you’re well, we’ll keep our promise and travel the world together!”It was me who was about to die, yet they only cared about Aithne.Watching thei
