Chapter 4

Autor: Forest
Half an hour later, the organizers replied.

"No substitutions. No absences. No delay to the start time."

"All four competitors must arrive early."

The notice came with a message from the foundation.

"Submit the roster within half an hour, or prepare to declare bankruptcy."

With the school under that much pressure, one of the students finally snapped, "She's so high-maintenance! It's infuriating!

"She's insufferable on a normal day, and she's still this selfish at a time like this!"

With Minerva egging them on, Tom and William rushed over and pinned me between them.

Minerva came over and pushed a pen into my hand.

"If you won't cooperate, don't blame us for getting your signature this way.

"Hold on to her. Don't let her get away!"

I struggled to get free, but Minerva had other students block Wesley when he tried to rescue me.

She gripped my hand and forced me to sign the roster.

The two boys were too strong. I couldn't break free.

Once it was signed, she had them let go of me. "If you'd cooperated earlier, you wouldn't have had to go through that!" she sneered.

The students around us saw that it had worked and burst into cheers.

They said exactly what they thought of me, right to my face.

"What a cold, nasty girl. She doesn't think about anyone but herself."

"Minerva's the smart one. She always knows how to handle her!"

Minerva enjoyed the spectacle as they pointed and talked about me. She got in one more dig. "Don't talk about her like that. If our precious little dumb blonde starts crying, good luck calming her down.

"She embarrassed herself at the dance and then cried about it for ages!"

I gave a cold laugh. "I didn't cry. If you're going to spread a rumor, you need proof. Where is it?"

David came over.

Minerva handed him the signed roster.

He praised her for it. "That's our top student for you. What about the day of the competition?"

Minerva laughed and gave William and Tom their instructions. "On competition day, go straight to her house, tie her up, and bring her here.

"Oh, and put white lights around the mirror in the competitors' lounge so she can do her makeup more easily."

William didn't understand the last part, but he wrote all of it down.

Tom couldn't help asking, "Why are we letting her do her makeup at all?"

Minerva laughed again. "Looking good is all she has going for her. If she shows up looking like a mess, Rockford will laugh at us."

Tom was quick to agree. "You've thought of everything, Minerva! We'll do whatever you say!"

Minerva smiled, pleased with herself.

I listened, then raised an eyebrow, a little surprised.

"All that just to make sure I show up? You've really planned this out."

Minerva glanced at me.

"What choice do I have? You're so fussy and high-maintenance."

I let the jab go and turned to Ryan.

"The last ten questions. Do they all appear at once?"

"It's a speed round. Of course not."

"Read me the rules."

William didn't understand.

"Why do you care? You're not answering anything."

"I'm not allowed to learn the rules unless I'm answering?"

I took the entry form from David and crossed out the crooked signature in front of everyone.

Then I signed it again myself: Merida Hale.

"That was too ugly to look at.

"It looks much better when I write it myself."

Ryan gave me a suspicious look.

At my urging, he read the rules aloud. "Actually, all ten questions appear at once when the final round starts.

"Competitors get one minute to read them before they can start answering.

"Once the speed round starts, whichever side answers the most questions correctly within five minutes wins."

I looked at them.

"So I only get to answer if all of you are stumped?"

Tom scoffed, "Just sit there and look pretty! Don't start guessing with your eyes closed!"

I gave him a cold smile.

"Tom, we'll see which one of us ends up sitting there looking useless."

He bristled.

"Merida, what's that supposed to mean?! How dare you question my ability!"

I said calmly, "I mean, don't hold me back at the competition."

All ten questions at once suited me just fine. It would save time.

Minerva and my old classmates were waiting with armfuls of flowers. After graduating from high school, they'd all gotten into their dream colleges.A lot of reporters were waiting out there too.Seeing all those people, I instinctively turned around. I hoped to slip out the back and get home without having to face them.My classmates caught up and cut me off.My arms were full of flowers. The cards on the bouquets were full of heartfelt good wishes."Wishing Merida a brilliant future!""After seeing you dance today, I can die happy.""Merida, you've been the blonde of my dreams ever since the Academic Champions Invitational.""Can't wait for the next tour! After thinking it over, I told them, "I turned it down for now. I want to graduate with all of you."They were caught off guard, and then they sighed with relief. Before every practice exam, Minerva would ask if I planned to take it seriously. If I did, she'd drop from first in our grade to second.I liked teasing her, so I often gave her misleading answers."I think I'll just wing this one."

The foundation signed a new funding agreement with our school for another ten years.David held a dance on the day he announced it.I had just walked in wearing my new dress when my classmates crowded around, saying they had a surprise for me.I followed them over. From a distance, I could see Minerva waiting with a shoebox.I opened it. A pair of pale pink heels.Minerva still didn't like me, but she'd lost the bet and had to keep her word. She was my minion now."The whole school chipped in for these. They're designer."We know how picky you are. You wouldn't put just anything on your feet."I decided to have some fun with her."Since you're my minion, could you help me put them on? I don't feel like bending down."Minerva's face darkened."No. I'm not touching your smelly feet."I looked at her."Isn't a minion supposed to do whatever the boss says?"She pulled a face and reluctantly crouched down."Lift your foot. I'll put them on for the princess."I gracefully lifted my foot and

For the extra round, ten teachers wrote one question each.Preston stepped forward for Rockford. The first question appeared. He was still reading it when I selected my answer.Green light.Second question.Green light. After I'd answered four questions correctly in a row, Preston started to look rattled. He couldn't understand how I could read and answer each question before he'd even finished scanning it.After getting the first five right, I glanced at him."Would you like me to give you a few seconds to think?"Sweat beaded on Preston's forehead."No. Go ahead.""All right."I selected another answer in the blink of an eye.Green light again. The teachers and students in our school's section had risen to their feet, tense with anticipation. They stayed quiet, afraid to break my concentration.Whenever the Rockford students' chatter distracted me, our side shouted them down."Shut up! Don't you dare say a word against her!""Weren't you the ones with doubts? Why so quiet now?""You

I hung up on him.Minerva saw it."Your grandfather?""A scam call.""A scammer saved in your phone as Grandpa?""Scammers have all sorts of tricks these days."Minerva clearly didn't believe me.The committee was writing the new questions.Suddenly the doors of the hall opened. The students by the entrance started talking over each other.Bodyguards came through first, clearing the way.Behind them was an old man in a casual suit. His hair wasn't fully white yet, and his eyes were sharp. Many of the teachers and students recognized him on sight. It was Edward Hale, chairman of the Hale Group. As soon as I saw my grandfather, I lowered my head and moved farther into the corner.Emma Collins, who sat next to me in class, asked, "Merida, is that old man looking for you?""No.""Then why is he coming over to our side?""Maybe there are no seats left on theirs.""There are plenty over there."Before I could find another excuse, my grandfather was standing in front of me."Merida. The hall was silent.Preston stood there with his mouth hanging open. The host didn't speak for a long moment. The technicians hurried to check the equipment. They went over every component and confirmed there was nothing wrong.I looked down at my reflection in the response pad's dark screen. My makeup was still perfect, and I let out a breath.Minerva rushed up and grabbed my hand."Th-that's impossible! How could an idiot like you...""Why is it impossible?"I looked up at her calmly. Her hand was shaking a little. She turned to the technicians."Is there something wrong with her response pad?"Preston's expression turned grim."There has to be! Your own teachers checked those! Who knows what's inside them!"He stood up."How could someone who's all boobs and no brains answer six questions in one go?"And n-not get a single one wrong?"I pulled my hand back and flexed my sore wrist."Were those six questions difficult?"I knew the answers the moment I read the questions."Minerva fr
