At morning assembly, before the last name on the competition roster was announced, I stood beside my butler, Wesley Grant. He held an umbrella over me while I touched up my makeup."Tilt it more this way. I just fixed my face. David hurried to ask our head coach, Ryan Brooks, "Have the rules changed much?""Everything else stays the same. The third and final round is now a speed round."That reassured the teachers a little.Minerva ranked first in our grade and was steady under pressure.William Carter was a strong student and a quick thinker.Tom Bennett had climbed from near the bottom of our grade to third in a single semester.He had improved faster than either of the others.They had been preparing for this invitational for more than a year.Even so, none of them could relax yet. There was one more requirement.The organizers required a fourth competitor.That student would be chosen at random.
