Chapter 3 Never His Priority

Author: Canal
The screen was completely black as Camilla scrubbed the keyboard with a rag.

"What the hell are you doing?"

I rushed over, shoved her aside, and pulled the laptop out of the water.

Camilla shook the water off her hands, looking innocent. "Your keyboard was so dirty, I thought I'd clean it for you. You're welcome. It was no big deal."

"All my company's core data was on there!"

Timothy came out of the master bedroom and immediately pulled her behind him. "Camilla was just trying to help clean it. It's just a laptop. I'll buy you a new one."

I shot back, "It's the data I'm talking about! Three months of hard work, gone!"

"Vera, you're unbelievable. It's Camilla's birthday today. Do you have to make a scene every time?"

He casually pulled out his phone. "Emotional outburst. Unreasonable behavior. I'll be deducting $2,000."

Clutching my waterlogged laptop, I rushed to the office. My supervisor tossed a termination notice onto my desk.

"We received an anonymous report accusing you of using your position to leak confidential business information. The report included screenshots showing the company's core data being transferred out of your laptop."

I was stunned.

I left the laptop on the coffee table last night. Camilla was the only one who'd touched it.

She hadn't just destroyed the laptop. She'd copied the data before dumping it in the water.

I stood outside the office building with a cardboard box in my arms and called Timothy. "I got fired."

"So what? Now you can stay home and focus on trying to get pregnant."

"Camilla stole my data and sent it to a competitor."

His voice turned impatient. "You got fired because you screwed up at work, and now you want to drag someone else into it?"

The wind blew my termination notice against my leg.

Five years ago, when I failed my first promotion interview, Timothy had waited outside the office until midnight. He'd printed my proposal again and rehearsed my presentation with me 27 times.

He'd told me that my work wasn't just a way to pass the time. One day, I'd make it to the position I'd always wanted.

Then, three years ago, Camilla returned from overseas. For the first time, Timothy missed my promotion review to attend her homecoming dinner.

After that, whenever Camilla and I had a conflict, he always told me to look at what I'd done wrong first.

"Once we're married, I'll support you. You don't need to put your job ahead of the people closest to you. Be there at 7.00 p.m. to celebrate Camilla's birthday."

Before I could respond, he hung up.

Camilla had just posted an update on social media.

She was holding up a set of keys to an apartment overlooking the river, with Timothy standing behind her.

Her caption read, "A little birthday sulk, cured with a new place."

The apartment was listed at $2.6 million.

For my birthday last year, Timothy had given me a $39 book on emotional management. On the title page, he'd written, "Stability is the best gift of all."

When I arrived at the private dining room that evening, everyone was already raising their glasses to celebrate her birthday.

"Timothy, you just casually dropped $2.6 million on her? Why don't you two just get married already?"

"Don't start." Timothy lounged against the couch, his tone casual. "Camilla's just a buddy. There's nothing between us. Her lease was up, so I gave her a place to live. That's all."

Someone laughed and bumped his shoulder.

"What about the place you and Vera are supposed to live in after the wedding?"

"We're splitting the cost equally. She doesn't like owing anyone."

Two years ago, when we'd discussed buying a home, Timothy had pulled up a spreadsheet and calculated my share down to the last dollar. He'd insisted we split the cost equally.

To scrape together my half of the down payment, I'd taken on three freelance projects and worked until I developed a bleeding ulcer.

Later, when I accidentally transferred $86 less than I owed, he reminded me twice.

I pushed open the door, and the laughter inside stopped at once.

The room fell silent, and the mood turned icy.

I'd spent three years trying to please these people, yet the group chat still listed me as "Timothy's Partner."

This little circle had never truly accepted me.

Camilla was the first to break the silence. "Vera, you're finally here! It's not nearly as lively without you."

After a few rounds of drinks, she brought out a truth-or-dare wheel and suggested we play.

The wheel stopped on Timothy.

A wealthy heir with a teasing expression let out a whistle. "Timothy, truth. If Camilla had never gone abroad, would you still have decided to marry Vera?"

"You said I was too sensitive. But before Camilla moved into our bedroom, before she sabotaged my work, you knew what my boundaries were."I wasn't too sensitive. You kept crossing those boundaries, then punishing me whenever I complained."His eyes were red, and his voice broke completely. "Vera, I'll change. It won't happen again."It was the first time I'd ever seen him cry, but I felt nothing."Eight years ago, you carried me to the ER when I needed help. You helped me put together my presentation for a promotion and told me that both my career and my life mattered. I loved the man you were back then."Hope returned to his eyes. "Then we can still go back to how things were.""We can't. Because that same man was the one who did everything that came afterward."I stood up and walked away. When the glass door closed behind me, he was still reaching out toward me.It wasn't until I reached the corner that I heard him crying behind me.…A month later, I joined the core data

The next afternoon, I'd just replaced the locks on my old house when Timothy showed up with a tablet. He hadn't shaved, and his eyes were bloodshot. "Vera, take a look."The first document was a bankruptcy liquidation notice and a detention notice.Frederick's shell company was suspected of fraud and had been seized. The second was a set of industry-wide blacklisting orders. The blond guy who'd joined in the taunting at the private room had seen his family's building materials supply chain completely cut off.The third file was a video.Camilla's hair was a mess, and her face was streaked with tears as she repeated the same apology to the camera."I'm sorry. I shouldn't have spread rumors about Mrs. Hughes or caused a scene at her funeral."Timothy swiped to several screenshots of chat records. "I've finished looking into what happened to your company's data."His voice was so hoarse I could barely hear him."Camilla secretly copied the data and sent it to a competitor. She'

The next morning, someone pounded on my door.I had barely opened it when Camilla shoved her way inside with a man in tow. "Vera, I brought someone from your family to see you."The man took off his sunglasses, revealing a pair of eyes strikingly similar to mine.It was my father, Frederick Hughes.I remembered how he'd shown up with his pregnant mistress and demanded that my mom give up the company and the house.Camilla pushed past me and stepped right inside."Your mom's gone. Your father is the only family you have left. I'm doing this for Timothy's sake. He's always worried you don't have a man in your family to protect you."The man burped, then greedily surveyed the room."Vera, now that your mom's dead, I'm entitled to half this house. You're about to marry that rich man from the Wells family, so hurry up and get the deed."My nails dug into my palms. "Get out."Camilla frowned, putting on a wounded expression. "Why can't you appreciate what I'm doing? I'm trying to h

Timothy's eyes were bloodshot. The moment he saw my mom's memorial portrait at the center of the room, his expression changed. He picked up a flower, laid it beside her casket, and bowed his head. "Mrs. Hughes, I'm sorry."I took the flower from beside the casket and tossed it into the trash can nearby."You don't need to play the son-in-law anymore."His hand froze in midair. "I didn't think things would get this bad. It was just a birthday game. Camilla took the post too far. Who could've known your mom would see it? And who could've known she'd be so badly affected by it?"I stared at him. "You didn't think it would happen, or you just didn't care?"He sighed. "Vera, I'm hurting too. Come home with me. I'll get the photos taken down, and I'll make Camilla apologize to you in person. We'll put this behind us and go ahead with the wedding as planned.""Put it behind us?""She's already gone. Dragging this out will only make things harder for the people still alive.""Timothy,

The next morning, Timothy took out his phone. The screen lit up. No missed calls. No unread messages. Our chat was silent. He let out a quiet laugh. So I was really angry this time. I'd gone the entire night without trying to make up with him.He opened his money transfer app, intending to deduct $2,000 according to the penalty list for staying out all night. But when he tried doing so, it failed."Attempt failed. The other party has revoked access to the linked account."Timothy froze and tried again. It still didn't work.In eight years, no matter how badly we'd fought, I'd never touched the account that represented our future together.Even when he'd skipped my promotion hearing to be with Camilla, I'd only turned off my phone for two days. I still made sure my paycheck went into our shared account on time. This time, the account had been unlinked at 11.57 p.m. the night before. He sent me a message. "Link the account again, and I'll let your lies slide."At once, he r

Timothy put away his car keys. "Then I'll stay and sleep in the guest room."Camilla immediately smiled and linked her arm through his, leading him inside. As soon as Timothy took out his phone, she pressed a hand over his. "My birthday isn't over yet. You promised to give me all your attention."Timothy frowned, but he put his phone away anyway. "Fine. I won't look at it."He thought that if he stood his ground this time, I wouldn't dare threaten to break up with him again.Half an hour later, the bathroom door opened. Camilla stepped out completely naked, her wet hair clinging to her back.Timothy quickly looked away and handed her a bathrobe. "Put this on."Camilla strolled over without a care and perched on the armrest beside him. "I don't like feeling restricted. It's uncomfortable to sleep in clothes.""You're a grown woman now." Timothy's voice grew sterner, a clear warning in his tone.Camilla snorted and leaned closer to him."Why are you pretending to be so innocent
