Chapter 2 The Pattersons

Author: Alora Monroe
Five years ago, Bethy had complained that the neighbourhood was run-down and the neighbors were too noisy back when I had just started working at sea.

She insisted that I use the cash I'd gotten for our wedding to rent her a fully furnished two-bedroom apartment in the upscale residential complex next door, saying that she had plenty of friends over there and wouldn't get bored.

At that time, I'd foolishly given in and agreed to her demands.

Bayville wasn't far away. So, it only took me 10 minutes to arrive there by taxi.

As I sat in the car, I couldn't help but tighten my grip around my phone, my mind recalling how pale Sophia's face had been. I couldn't help but be reminded of that half jar of ketchup, and those bug-infested pasta.

'I gave her 20,000 every month, but she only gave my wife 100! Where did the other 19,000 go?' I wondered.

Soon, the taxi stopped at the entrance to Bayville. I handed the driver some money and rushed inside.

I could see the lights streaming through the window on the second floor and heard laughter coming from it even though I was still downstairs.

I didn't take the elevator. Instead, I impatiently bounded up the stairs, taking several steps at a time.

The moment I rounded the corner onto the second floor, I saw that the security door hadn't been fully shut. I was just about to knock to announce myself, but the voices coming from inside made me freeze.

"Oh my, Aunt Bethy, you're so generous! This is the first time I've ever had a lobster!" It was the voice of a young woman, full of the smug satisfaction of someone who had gotten a bargain and still wanted to show off her good fortune.

I recognized that voice immediately. It was Selina Patterson, Joseph Patterson's daughter. She used to live next to us in the old neighborhood.

Selina was known for being lazy and gluttonous. She was also infamous for spending all day fantasizing about marrying into a wealthy family.

Then, I heard my mother's familiar booming voice.

There was none of the weary bitterness she usually had when she came whining to me about money. Instead, her voice was overflowing with warmth.

"You should eat more if you like it! I'll buy more for you tomorrow if it isn't enough. All I want is for you and your father to be happy."

"Bethy, you sure know how to treat people right." Joseph's hoarse voice rang out, dripping with sarcasm. Then, he asked, "The money from that son of yours came in this month, right?"

"It did!" Bethy answered eagerly. "19 grand and not a cent missing. I've transferred it to your account this morning!"

The blood in my body seemed to freeze in my veins right then and there.

My wife was sitting in our dreary apartment, forced to eat bug-infested pasta, and unable to afford a prenatal checkup. Meanwhile, my mother was using the money I had risked my life to earn to treat her neighbors and had even transferred my salary to them!

I kicked open the half-closed security door with a loud bang, causing the door to slam so violently into the wall that the entire floor started shaking..

The apartment was still warm from the heating, and the crystal chandelier cast a dazzling light over the dining table. A bright red lobster sat in the center. There was even a king crab and two bottles of wine right next to it.

As if that weren't enough, I saw crab shells piled high in front of all three of them.

Bethy dropped her utensils onto the table with a clatter, and her face instantly turned stark white.

"L-Logan? I thought you were supposed to come ashore next week?"

I ignored her as I strode over and snatched up the phone she had left on the table.

"What are you doing?" She lunged forward to grab it back.

I shoved her away and opened her transaction history.

"September 15th. Transfer to Selina: 38,000. Note: Handbag."

"October 1st. Transfer to Joseph: 50,000. Note: Haiwai trip."

"November 2nd. Transfer to Selina: 25,000. Note: Cosmetic procedures."

"AT 10 a.m., a transfer to Joseph: 19,000."

I read them out one by one, my voice growing colder with every line.

I read through five years worth of transactions and noted that it came to a total of 1.2 million. All my hard earned money, every single goddamned penny, had gone into the Patterson family's pockets.

"How wonderful." I slammed her phone down onto the table. "Does the food bought with the money I risked my life to earn taste good?"

I patted his cheek, which was stiff with fear, as a devilish smile played across my lips."You can spend the rest of your life in prison slowly getting to know that wonderful mother of yours," I drawled.Donald's legs gave out from under him, causing him to collapse onto the stage like a marionette with his strings cut as he closed his eyes in despair.Cold handcuffs were fastened around Bethy and Joseph's wrists as the police dragged them out of the banquet hall.Camera flashes went wild, capturing every second of this historic scene.I stood at the center of the stage, looking down at the powerful elites who had once seemed so far above me, but who now regarded me with a mixture of awe and fear. Then, I turned toward the enormous floor-to-ceiling windows of the banquet hall. The night sky over Mavile City glittered with winking stars.'Sophia, did you see that?' I thought inwardly. 'I've finally sent the people who hurt us straight down to hell with my own bare hands.'Two m

"In that case, why don't I show you just who's the fake one here?" I pulled out my phone and connected it to the banquet hall's Bluetooth sound system.Instantly, that sickening conversation between Joseph and Bethy echoed throughout the entire hall."The Verix family's precious heir, Donald Verix, is your biological son, Bethy Anderson. You switched your sickly son with the healthy baby boy Mrs. Verix had just given birth to back when you were working as the private hospital's cleaner! "Your biological son has been living a life of luxury with the Verix family for the past 28 years while you raised Logan, who's the true heir of the Verix family, like a mutt to be discarded at a moment's notice!"The entire banquet hall fell deathly silent when the recording ended. Everyone was too stunned to speak, shocked to hear that one of the filthiest and most vicious conspiracies imaginable had happened within such a wealthy family.Ryan's eyes turned red rimmed. He rushed onto the stage i

Meanwhile, inside a secluded private room on the second floor of the banquet hall, I stood there in a black suit Maria had specially commissioned for me, a glass of red wine in hand as I gazed down at Donald, who was basking in the spotlight onstage.Maria, who was standing next to me, had a dark look on her face. Then, she murmured, "It's time."The applause was deafening inside the banquet hall. The cameras flashed like blinking stars, making Donald, who stood at the center of the stage, look like a king.Donald said, holding the microphone as he gazed affectionately toward the VIP seats in the first row, "I would like to invite my most beloved mother, Mrs. Maria Verix, onto the stage to witness this exciting moment with me."Every pair of eyes in the room instantly turned toward the top of the white-marble spiral staircase leading down from the second floor.Maria elegantly descended the stairs one step at a time, dressed in a black velvet gown, her face covered in frost. Meanwhile, two people were celebrating inside an upscale restaurant."Joseph, don't you think we've got Logan completely under our thumb?" Bethy said smugly before gulping down a mouthful of red wine. "Once we spend all the money, we'll just come up with another excuse to ask him for more. His wife is about to give birth anyway, so he won't dare refuse us!""Exactly!" Joseph's face was glowing with satisfaction. "As long as we hold the Verix family's secret in our hands, we'll never have to worry about money for the rest of our lives!"Just as the two of them were getting carried away with their triumph, the door to the private dining room suddenly swung open. Then, four burly bodyguards walked inside.Bethy jumped in fright at the sight of them."Who are you?" she demanded. The lead bodyguard removed his sunglasses, revealing an extremely deceptive and respectfully polite smile."May I ask if you are Bethy Moore and Joseph Patterson? It was Mr. Donald who sent us."Bethy's e

"Demons… They're fucking demons!" Maria hissed. Then, she suddenly raised her hand and struck herself viciously across the face. The blow was so hard that blood immediately appeared at the corner of her mouth."Mrs. Verix!" the assistant cried out in dismay."I'm an idiot!" Maria gritted her teeth, a monstrous hatred burning in her eyes. "That vicious woman worked as a cleaner at the hospital back then. "I felt sorry for her, so not only did I refuse to hold her responsible for the mistakes she made at work, I even gave her a huge amount of money. Yet, she dared to switch my child with hers! I treated that bastard like the apple of my eye for 28 years. I hired the best private tutors for him, sent him abroad to study, and was going to let him inherit the family's hundred-billion corporation!"Meanwhile, my biological son was drifting across the open sea, and my daughter-in-law and grandson were nearly driven to their deaths in a rented apartment by his fucking demon of a mother

Maria didn't faint. As a businesswoman who had built a hundred-billion-dollar business empire alongside her husband, Maria wasn't just a mild-mannered woman who only knew how to pray and fast.Still, her hands shook as she reached out and answered the call."Mom, are you done praying?" Donald's voice was gentle on the other end of the line, carrying a trace of well-masked faux concern."It's cold up in the mountains, and your heart isn't good. Come down early. The board transition meeting is in three days. You and Dad have to be there on time to witness me officially take over as the chairman."Maria bit down hard on her lower lip. Only when she had bitten hard enough to draw blood did she barely manage to suppress the anguished scream rising in her throat. Then, she took a deep breath to fortify herself as she replied calmly, "Okay. Donald, don't worry. I'll make sure to prepare a very special gift for you on that day."Maria hung up after that. When she closed her eyes, two st
