Chapter 3 The Divorce Agreement

Author: Alora Monroe
Selina stood up and rudely pointed at my nose as if she were completely in the right.

"What do you mean by your money? Aunt Bethy gave it to us willingly! It's compensation for emotional support," she spat.

Then, she sneered as she continued, "Besides, that wife of yours doesn't deserve such luxury. What's wrong with Aunt Bethy giving her 100 per month? A woman like her deserves to eat nothing but bug-infested pasta!"

"Logan!" Bethy screamed and grabbed my arm. "I was the one who gave them the money! I'm your mother! I gave birth to you, so I can give your money to whoever I want!"

Then, she pointed at Joseph as a flicker of panic flashed through her eyes. "We would've been doomed if it hadn't been for Joseph! Show some gratitude!"

"What kind of favor takes more than a million to repay?" I asked.

Joseph casually raised his glass and mocked sarcastically, "Logan, your mother is a sensible woman. Things will get pretty ugly soon if you keep raising a fuss. Isn't that right, Bethy?"

Bethy shuddered and nodded repeatedly.

"That's right, Logan. Let's just pretend that none of this ever happened…" she muttered.

I suddenly burst out laughing as I stared at the trio of greedy leeches. Then, I pulled out my phone and called the bank's customer service line.

"Hello. I want to report my salary card ending in 7821 as lost. Yes, please freeze it immediately."

All the color in Bethy's cheeks disappeared when she heard my words.

"What are you doing?" she shrieked.

"Joseph. Selina." I stared at them. "1.2 million. I have records of every single transfer she made. You have three days to give me my money back. Otherwise, I'm going to report you to the police for extortion."

The wineglass in Joseph's hand jerked violently.

I turned and stormed out the door, listening to Bethy's heart-wrenching wails echo behind me.

I'd mistakenly assumed that I'd been risking my life for my family for the past five years. Yet, what actually happened was that I'd personally pushed my wife into a hellhole where she couldn't even afford enough food.

I recalled her empty eyes as she told me about subsisting off a mere 100 dollars. I thought of the empty refrigerator and a pile of overdue notices that were sprawled across the floor. I didn't dare to imagine how desperate she must have felt.

When I passed the 24-hour shop at the entrance to the neighborhood, I went inside and bought the most expensive chicken soup they had, along with several hot dishes.

Then, I held the insulated bag tightly against my chest and ran all the way back to our run-down old residential complex.

I was going to apologize to Sophia. I was going to tell her that I'd frozen the card and would take back every last cent of the money that I was owed. I was going to tell her that she would be in charge of our household finances from now on.

I was panting heavily by the time I climbed up to the fifth floor. My hands trembled slightly as I pulled out the key and opened the door.

The lights were on, and Sophia had changed into clean clothes. However, I saw her sitting next to an old suitcase that had clearly been packed beforehand.

She sat quietly on the sofa, looking not unlike a soulless puppet.

She turned her head mechanically when she heard the door open. Her eyes fell on the insulated bag in my arms, but there wasn't the slightest ripple of emotion in her hollow eyes.

Naturally, I noticed her non-reaction and felt a lump in my throat. Then, I hurried over and took the soup out.

"Sophia, I bought you some sou—"

"Forget it." Sophia cut me off.

Then, she gently slid two sheets of A4 paper across the coffee table.

"Logan, sign them."

I froze where I stood, my gaze following her fingertips to the two sheets of paper.

There were only two words printed at the top in black and white. "Divorce agreement," it said. Nevertheless, my eyes slid down to the bottom-right corner. Sophia had already signed her name on it.

I could tell from the crinkle that she'd pressed the pen down so hard that it had nearly torn through the paper.

The insulated bag I'd been carrying slipped from my hand. It hit the floor, and the chicken soup spilled everywhere.

Nonetheless, even the heat wafting off it couldn't warm this apartment, which felt as cold as an ice cellar.

I patted his cheek, which was stiff with fear, as a devilish smile played across my lips."You can spend the rest of your life in prison slowly getting to know that wonderful mother of yours," I drawled.Donald's legs gave out from under him, causing him to collapse onto the stage like a marionette with his strings cut as he closed his eyes in despair.Cold handcuffs were fastened around Bethy and Joseph's wrists as the police dragged them out of the banquet hall.Camera flashes went wild, capturing every second of this historic scene.I stood at the center of the stage, looking down at the powerful elites who had once seemed so far above me, but who now regarded me with a mixture of awe and fear. Then, I turned toward the enormous floor-to-ceiling windows of the banquet hall. The night sky over Mavile City glittered with winking stars.'Sophia, did you see that?' I thought inwardly. 'I've finally sent the people who hurt us straight down to hell with my own bare hands.'Two m

"In that case, why don't I show you just who's the fake one here?" I pulled out my phone and connected it to the banquet hall's Bluetooth sound system.Instantly, that sickening conversation between Joseph and Bethy echoed throughout the entire hall."The Verix family's precious heir, Donald Verix, is your biological son, Bethy Anderson. You switched your sickly son with the healthy baby boy Mrs. Verix had just given birth to back when you were working as the private hospital's cleaner! "Your biological son has been living a life of luxury with the Verix family for the past 28 years while you raised Logan, who's the true heir of the Verix family, like a mutt to be discarded at a moment's notice!"The entire banquet hall fell deathly silent when the recording ended. Everyone was too stunned to speak, shocked to hear that one of the filthiest and most vicious conspiracies imaginable had happened within such a wealthy family.Ryan's eyes turned red rimmed. He rushed onto the stage i

Meanwhile, inside a secluded private room on the second floor of the banquet hall, I stood there in a black suit Maria had specially commissioned for me, a glass of red wine in hand as I gazed down at Donald, who was basking in the spotlight onstage.Maria, who was standing next to me, had a dark look on her face. Then, she murmured, "It's time."The applause was deafening inside the banquet hall. The cameras flashed like blinking stars, making Donald, who stood at the center of the stage, look like a king.Donald said, holding the microphone as he gazed affectionately toward the VIP seats in the first row, "I would like to invite my most beloved mother, Mrs. Maria Verix, onto the stage to witness this exciting moment with me."Every pair of eyes in the room instantly turned toward the top of the white-marble spiral staircase leading down from the second floor.Maria elegantly descended the stairs one step at a time, dressed in a black velvet gown, her face covered in frost. Meanwhile, two people were celebrating inside an upscale restaurant."Joseph, don't you think we've got Logan completely under our thumb?" Bethy said smugly before gulping down a mouthful of red wine. "Once we spend all the money, we'll just come up with another excuse to ask him for more. His wife is about to give birth anyway, so he won't dare refuse us!""Exactly!" Joseph's face was glowing with satisfaction. "As long as we hold the Verix family's secret in our hands, we'll never have to worry about money for the rest of our lives!"Just as the two of them were getting carried away with their triumph, the door to the private dining room suddenly swung open. Then, four burly bodyguards walked inside.Bethy jumped in fright at the sight of them."Who are you?" she demanded. The lead bodyguard removed his sunglasses, revealing an extremely deceptive and respectfully polite smile."May I ask if you are Bethy Moore and Joseph Patterson? It was Mr. Donald who sent us."Bethy's e

"Demons… They're fucking demons!" Maria hissed. Then, she suddenly raised her hand and struck herself viciously across the face. The blow was so hard that blood immediately appeared at the corner of her mouth."Mrs. Verix!" the assistant cried out in dismay."I'm an idiot!" Maria gritted her teeth, a monstrous hatred burning in her eyes. "That vicious woman worked as a cleaner at the hospital back then. "I felt sorry for her, so not only did I refuse to hold her responsible for the mistakes she made at work, I even gave her a huge amount of money. Yet, she dared to switch my child with hers! I treated that bastard like the apple of my eye for 28 years. I hired the best private tutors for him, sent him abroad to study, and was going to let him inherit the family's hundred-billion corporation!"Meanwhile, my biological son was drifting across the open sea, and my daughter-in-law and grandson were nearly driven to their deaths in a rented apartment by his fucking demon of a mother

Maria didn't faint. As a businesswoman who had built a hundred-billion-dollar business empire alongside her husband, Maria wasn't just a mild-mannered woman who only knew how to pray and fast.Still, her hands shook as she reached out and answered the call."Mom, are you done praying?" Donald's voice was gentle on the other end of the line, carrying a trace of well-masked faux concern."It's cold up in the mountains, and your heart isn't good. Come down early. The board transition meeting is in three days. You and Dad have to be there on time to witness me officially take over as the chairman."Maria bit down hard on her lower lip. Only when she had bitten hard enough to draw blood did she barely manage to suppress the anguished scream rising in her throat. Then, she took a deep breath to fortify herself as she replied calmly, "Okay. Donald, don't worry. I'll make sure to prepare a very special gift for you on that day."Maria hung up after that. When she closed her eyes, two st
