Chapter 629

Author: Hugh White
The moment the black dots appeared, Hayley's mind lit up with alarms.

On the radar map forming inside her head, red markers flooded in. Drones were already circling in the sky.

But the fighter jets above them were flying far higher than any drone could reach.

And their purpose was obvious.

Bombing.

"Hayley! We've got a problem!" Milo's voice snapped through her earpiece. "Air raid! Over 50 fighter jets!"

Boom!

The first bombs struck the outer defensive line.

"The next day, Theo and Larry's girlfriends came looking for Jasmine and beat her up. If Warren hadn't stepped in to protect her, we would've thrown her out of here a long time ago."Ellen Alvarez's face twisted with jealousy as she spoke, her expression growing more animated by the second."She just thinks she's special because she's pretty. Those guys must be blind. Someone like me, they don't even look at twice. But they're all chasing after Jasmine, that quiet little tramp. If I had a face like hers…"Just then, a rough male voice echoed from outside."Ellen! What are you doing in there?"Ellen froze mid-sentence. She looked at Hayley quickly. "I'll tell you more next time. Give me that bar."Hayley tossed her the chocolate bar.Clutching the five chocolate bars she had collected, Ellen hurried toward the door. But the moment she stepped out, a man outside blocked her path.Hayley heard the arguing first. Then, suddenly, Ellen was yanked off balance and flipped backward, h

"Yeah." Hayley slipped a hand into her backpack. When she pulled it back out, a chocolate bar appeared in front of the woman. The woman's eyes instantly lit up.Chocolate! It was sweet, rich, and full of fat and sugar. It was the kind of high-energy food people used to take for granted. She hadn't seen something like that in years. For a moment, it looked as if she might leap forward, snatch it, and stuff it straight into her shirt."Alright," she blurted. "Ask whatever you want. I'll tell you everything.""How many of you are there?""Fifteen.""The guy talking earlier, is he your leader?""Yeah. His name's Warren Burgess. Used to be the general manager at a real estate office on the seventh floor.""You've been living here the whole time?"The woman's eyes stayed locked on the chocolate bar. "Yeah.""For three years? What have you been eating and drinking?"This time she looked up sharply, her expression suddenly guarded. She wanted the food, sure, but she wasn't stu

With a sharp clang, the hook caught solid.Derek pulled the steel line tight. Once everyone helped secure it in place, he clipped his safety lock onto the cable and went first.Whoosh! With his light build, he moved smoothly across the line, gliding over the thick sea of zombies below until he reached the Defense Office on the other side. After landing, he quickly checked the room he had come through. Once he was sure it was clear, he reinforced the grappling hook and waved to the group across the gap. They could come over now.One by one, the others followed. There weren't many of them on this run. Only eight people total. When it was Liam's turn, Hayley spoke up."I'm staying here."She stood on the near side of the cable, her eyes drifting toward the doorway where those people had been quietly watching them the whole time. With outsiders nearby, someone had to stay behind. And from the look of that group, they were the calculating type. Hayley didn't trust them for a sec

"You wanna go downstairs?" The man in front looked at Hayley's group with a calculating gleam in his eyes."Yes," Liam said calmly. "Don't worry. We're not here to hurt anyone. Just step aside and let us pass.""No deal. If you want us to move, there's a price.""What kind of price?""You give us 100…no, 200 pounds of food. And 5 weapons for the toll."The man sized them up from head to toe.Everyone in Hayley's group was armed and geared up like professionals. Anyone could see they were loaded. When a fat prize like that walked into their hands, they couldn't let it go easily. After the man finished talking, Liam glanced back at Hayley. "Maybe we can give them some food?"Hayley lifted her eyes slightly. "Your call. But the weapons stay with us."Liam nodded and looked back down. "We can give you food. Weapons are off the table.""No weapons, no passage."Click.In the next second, every person above raised their rifles, the dark barrels pointing straight down.Offering

When the swarm of flies finally drifted away, everyone got a clear look at the floor. The corpses were smeared across the hallway. White clusters of fly eggs covered the rotting flesh.Several people immediately bent over and threw up.Hayley looked down at the body propped against the elevator doors.Compared to the others, this man had died the most intact. Still, flies had laid eggs all over his scalp, and the dried remains of his brain had hardened into a crust.Beside his body lay a staff badge."Griffin. Pick that up.""Yes, ma'am."Griffin stepped forward immediately and retrieved it. He wiped it clean with a piece of paper and handed it to her.The badge read, [Project Manager. Osbert Greene.]Hayley studied the name for a moment, one eyebrow lifting slightly. She scanned the entire floor.Aside from the faint buzzing of distant flies, the place was silent. Then, she turned and continued downstairs with the group. The next floor down was locked. The one below that

As Hayley's team moved lower, the building grew darker. With the power out, the commercial tower stayed dim even in broad daylight.Sunlight filtered through the glass exterior walls, but it only lit the narrow strip of floor near the windows. The elevators and stairwells were located in the center of the building. The elevators had been dead for years. Everyone switched on flashlights and continued down the stairwell beside them.Step by step, Hayley's team descended, clearing every floor as they went. They were lucky.Aside from the female zombie they encountered on the roof level, the next ten floors were empty; not a single zombie was present. That changed when they reached the 15th floor.Bang! The moment they stepped onto the landing, the emergency door slammed violently from the other side.A zombie in a security uniform threw itself against the door. The guard's face had been completely destroyed. It looked like someone had smashed it flat with a blunt weapon. Its

Hayley's territory looked completely different now. The vegetable patch had been cleared and organized. The fresh greens were stacked neatly in the shade, sorted into tidy piles. All the weeds were gone. The chicken and duck pens had been cleaned, and all broken parts were patched. The whole place

When Hayley drove her armored truck up into the mountain estates, she saw rows of villas stacked neatly along the hillside. Each house sat far apart, private and secluded, overlooking all of Aecraton like it was their personal kingdom.Anyone who could afford to live here had to be one of Aecrato

Up on the table, Hayley had fried five eggs and sautéed a whole pan of fresh greens. The golden fried eggs and crisp vegetables, alongside a big platter of barbecue ribs, made everyone's mouths water with just one look. It was especially tempting for these veterans, who hadn't had a proper meal in

Leonard wasn't sure what kind of soundproofing Hayley had installed here, or what kind of high-end generator she had managed to get her hands on, but the thing was almost silent.Normally, a diesel generator would rattle your bones and shake the walls, especially in a sealed-off space like this.L
