GENERAL

The sun dipped low over the backyard, casting golden hues across the freshly mowed lawn and the shimmering surface of the pool.

The scent of grilled corn and barbecue wafted through the air, and the sound of giggles echoed across the garden as Nyla and Nathan chased after each other with water balloons.

Their shrieks were loud and unapologetically joyful.

The family was putting on family T-shirts with the inscription of their status in the family on the back.

Violet stood barefoot on the grass; the oversized T-shirt she was wearing had “Mum” embroidered at the upper back, and she paired it with blue denim shorts. She had tongs in one hand and a bowl of sliced mango in the other. Her hair was tied up in a messy bun, and her face glowed from the warmth of the evening and the chaos around her.

Her eyes wandered over the children, who were engrossed in the fun they were having, and she caught sight of Nathan trying to throw the water balloon at Nyla’s face. “Don’t throw it at her

LIAMThe room was a disaster. Blood. Shattered glass. Her picture frame was clinging to the wall by one nail, and Loretta was being strangled by a man in the middle of her room. The scene from the previous day couldn’t get out of my head. I saw her eyes as soon as I walked in—the way she begged for her life, the way she pleaded for help even though she wasn’t saying a word. I felt for her even though I wasn’t in her shoes. I could imagine the pain she had to endure. I could imagine what she had to go through while battling with him. What if I had come later? What if I hadn’t been at home? Would she have lost her life yesterday? The cops and the ambulance arrived thirty minutes later. Matthew was taken to the station, and Loretta was rushed to the hospital. I followed suit. I couldn’t leave her alone. I was afraid something bad would happen again. She had been sleeping since yesterday and hadn’t opened her eyes. Her wounds had been treated and plastered. But as I glanced at the bruises

LORETTAMatthew kicked the knife from my hands. Before I could grab it back, it had gotten under the couch. That was it. I shouldn’t have gotten a couch. I hated that I bought a couch. My eyes blinked, shrouded with fear, and my body trembled like an epileptic patient. Why did it have to be now? Why did I fall into his trap again? “You are such a pathetic bastard, Loretta,” I hissed. He approached me with a dark smile tugging on his lips. Every step he took screamed danger. My heart skipped as he took steps toward me. I might die at this rate. No! I will die today. He wouldn’t forgive me. He wouldn’t forgive me for all the things I said while threatening him.“I warned you twice already, Loretta. Do not try to outsmart me,” he grunted, his voice husky. My body shook at his statement. I could smell danger. Everywhere reeked of danger.“I… I am sorry, Matthew. I didn’t mean it that way,” I mumbled.“You want to die, huh? Let me do you the honor.” He stretched his hand and snatched my ne

LIAMI stormed into the house and slammed the door angrily. The noise of the door ripped through the air, and it took seconds before it finally stopped ringing in my head.Loretta Maxwell. Who are you? Why do you keep interrupting my thoughts every second? Why has everything changed since I saw you?My hands found their way to my chest. I couldn’t believe what was happening. My heart skipped because of a mere touch? Because she touched me?Her facial expression when I was speaking to her appeared in my head, and I suddenly felt bad. That wasn’t the plan. Maybe I shouldn’t have spoken the way I did. She meant no harm. She only tried to help me. I shouldn’t have shouted at her the way I did. My heart twitched as I thought about that.Could she be crying right now? What if she hates me now?Gosh! Why do I even care about what she feels about me? Why do I care if she hated me or not? I deserve it. I acted like a jerk, and I deserve her hatred.Putting a hand on my waist, I ran my fingers

LORETTA“Ma… Matthew,” the name crawled out of my lips before I could stop myself from saying it. I wasn’t expecting to see him. How did he find me? Who told him about me?“Hey, girlfriend,” he muttered, waving with an ambiguous smile etched on his face. It dawned on me that it was reality when his voice wafted into my ears. I wasn’t dreaming. He was there… in front of me… at my door. He found me.Gasping, I pushed the door, attempting to slam it in his face, but he beat me to it. He grabbed the door before it could finally close, and he pushed it toward me, so it sent me on my buttocks.“Don’t try to outsmart me,” he mumbled as he stepped inside.Fear gripped me. My body shook tremendously, and sweat shrouded me. My eyes were fixed on him, monitoring his movements and actions. As he took steps closer, I dragged myself backward. I shouldn’t let him get to me. Matthew is a demon. I did my best to run from him, but he caught me. He found me barely six months after I escaped from him.“W

GENERALLoretta jogged from the gym to her apartment. From a distance, she caught a glimpse of Liam, who was washing his car, and her lips curled into a smile. The man right there had been the reason her life had been fun since she moved into the city. She loved how he acted anytime he found her suspicious and the look he radiated anytime things didn’t go the way he wanted. One thing she was glad she did was separate her work life from her personal life. It would have been torturous and stressful if she hadn’t made that policy and stuck to it.She slowed down when she got to where he was washing. Liam hadn’t seen her. His entire focus was on the car he was cleaning.“Need a hand?” she shouted from behind, putting her hands on her hips and breathing erratically. Her outfit was sleek yet cozy. She wore a ribbed, long-sleeve thermal crop top in forest green, paired with high-waisted black fleece-lined leggings that hugged her curves. A cropped taupe zip-up jacket added warmth without hid
