Evelyn had just seen Irene’s work and couldn’t stop herself from blurting out her admiration.

“You’re really talented, Irene.”

“Thank you, Miss Sinclair. I’m glad you like it,” Irene replied with a faint smile before glancing at Sebastian.

“Mr. Reed, please enjoy your meal. I’ll be going now.”

“Don’t go. Stay and eat with us,” Sebastian said calmly.

Evelyn quickly chimed in, urging her to stay, but Irene had already untied her apron. She excused herself politely, keeping a deliberate distance.

“Maybe another time, Miss Sinclair. If the food isn’t to your liking, just tell me. I’ll make it better next time.”

With that, she walked out with Daniel, who was waiting by the door. Evelyn tried to stop them, but the only reply she got was the heavy thud of the door closing.

Now the vast house was quiet, leaving only Evelyn and Sebastian. Slowly, an awkward tension began to settle between them.
