Evelyn’s voice wavered for a second, but she still forced out one word through clenched teeth. “No.”

“Take it back. Three seconds. Then you tell me what you actually need.”

Evelyn tightened her grip on her phone, trying to steady her breathing.

“I’m in the office parking lot. My car broke down. Can you pick me up?”

“Wait.”

Just that one word. Fifteen minutes later, Sebastian was already there.

Daniel took one look at the shattered windshield and froze. “Mrs. Sinclair, what happened? Who did this to you?”

Evelyn stood beside the car with her arms folded. Her face was still pale; she clearly hadn’t fully recovered from the shock.

Sebastian shrugged off his coat and draped it over her shoulders.

“I’m taking you home.”

“Okay.”

“Daniel, give me the keys. Take Evelyn’s car to the shop and get it fixed.”

“Yes, sir.”

On the drive home, Sebastian eventually asked what had happened.

Evelyn stayed quiet for a long moment.

Delilah appeared at the doorway just as her footsteps echoed from the hall. Liam, whose hearing was annoyingly sharp for a kid his age, immediately recognized her and turned his head. Evelyn looked up too, surprise flickering across her face as Delilah stepped inside carrying two bags of food.Delilah gave a small smile, saying she had been about to knock. She complimented Liam’s sharp ears. Evelyn asked how Delilah even knew she was at the hospital. Delilah blinked in confusion before explaining that she’d tried calling Evelyn with no luck, so she reached out to Sebastian instead.Evelyn fell quiet. Delilah walked over to adjust Liam’s bed, half–joking that Evelyn didn’t even bother telling her something this important, yet Sebastian Reed somehow managed to call and ask her to bring food.Liam, listening closely, cut in and asked why Sebastian didn’t come himself. Delilah laughed and teased him, saying he sure asked a lot of questions for someone who wasn’t even her brother-in-law. S

Sebastian had barely finished saying he’d arranged for Liam to be moved to a private room when Evelyn shut it down without hesitation. Her voice was sharp even though she was clearly exhausted.“No,” she cut in quickly. “It’s just two days. Don’t make it complicated. If you’re busy, go. Harry and I can handle it.”Sebastian’s jaw tightened. “What’s that supposed to mean? You want to stay here alone with another man?”Evelyn frowned. “I should be the one asking you. My brother’s in the hospital after getting beaten up, and I still have to deal with your weird mood?”Sebastian sucked in a long breath, holding back anger that was right on the edge. “Evelyn Sinclair, my patience has limits.”He turned away. “I’m leaving.”“Sebastian.” She followed him out. “What do you want from me?”Without answering, Sebastian grabbed her arm and pulled her into a side hallway. Her heels echoed down the corridor as she stumbled, her back hitting the wall harder than he intended. His voice came down like

Lunch that day felt more like an excuse to unwind than an actual business meeting. Half the people in the room had already agreed there was nothing urgent to finish anyway. At most, they’d take a few files home if needed. One of them was Mr. Morgan, already tipsy, who patted Evelyn’s shoulder before signaling his secretary to collect the project documents. He even joked with her. According to him, everyone in the business circle assumed Evelyn and Sebastian Reed were getting married soon, so he didn’t understand why the Reed family still let her handle work alone. The moment Sebastian’s name came up, Evelyn’s head spun. She tried to steer the conversation somewhere else and suggested another drink instead.By the time Sebastian arrived, lunch was over. Mr. Morgan had been escorted out by his secretary, and Delilah was helping a pale, unsteady Evelyn in the private lounge.Sebastian stepped inside wearing a dark expression. Daniel, trailing behind him, froze when he saw Evelyn’s condit

That morning, the sharp snap of Mr. Summers’ voice cut through the quiet inside the car. Camilla kept her head down as her father shot her a hard, warning look.“What is it, Dad?” she asked softly.“I’m telling you one more time. Stay away from Sebastian Reed. Do you hear me?” His voice filled the cabin, thick with restrained anger.Meanwhile, at Reed Group, the atmosphere couldn’t have been more different. Daniel had just informed Sebastian that the police showed up at the old Sinclair residence.“Boss, looks like Mrs. Sinclair was the one who called them. She’s furious. She wants you home now.”“When did this happen?” Sebastian asked as he straightened the meeting files on his desk.“Right after you went into that meeting with Mr. Summers. I didn’t dare interrupt.”“We’re going.”On the way back to the Reed estate, Daniel finally worked up the nerve to speak.“Boss… shouldn’t we tell Mrs. Evelyn this is just a misunderstanding? She wasn’t the one involved.”“And how do you know she

Evelyn stared at her plate just as Sebastian set his utensils down with a hard clatter. The air at the dinner table instantly cooled, like an invisible wall had gone up between them. Liam, who’d been eating quietly, froze mid-bite. Silence dropped over the room. When Liam eventually stepped out, Evelyn was the only one left at the table. Sebastian had already walked off without a word.“Where’d he go?” Liam asked when he came back and saw the empty chair.“He left. You wanna catch up to him? He’s not far.”Liam frowned at the door. “Did you two fight again?” He pulled out a chair, sounding exhausted. “I swear, I don’t get people like you. If you like each other, why the hell are you still fighting?”“Liam, I’ve told you a thousand times. We’re not dating.”He shrugged, unimpressed. “My roommate says when girls get mad, they act exactly like you. First they deny anything’s going on, then they say nothing happened, then they pretend they don’t even know the guy.”Evelyn’s hand froze hal
