To Be Free, You Must Die

“Wait-what?” I ask her, confusion covering the features on my face.

“I don’t have much long. The General and his guards would be here soon.” Her words are carried by the noise from above.

Why do they keep so many prisoners? And the crazy thing is that most of their prisoners are their own kind.

“What do you mean? I thought nothing could harm you. You told me that.” I say to her.

I feel a strange obligation to protect her. Protecting her would be like protecting my mother.

“Oh, Jaden. No matter how long the sun sits in the sky, it would still have to fall to sleep so the moon can rise.” She speaks in a parable that only takes a second for me to understand.

What she means is that no matter how long she stays alive because of her powers, she would eventually have to fall prey to the cold hands of death soon.

“I sense greatly that it is my time.” She adds.

She looks very weary. She maintains the appearance of a young lady, but her presence seems old and frail.
