Chapter 1

The parent-teacher conference had ended. I peeked out through the back door of the classroom and waited until everyone had left before slinging my backpack over my shoulder and heading out.

“Well, well. If it isn’t our class ghost.”

Three girls emerged from around the stairwell corner. Leading them was Lindsey Parker, her arms crossed and a mocking smile plastered across her face.

Her two lackeys, Samantha Reed and Jessica Miller, followed close behind. Together, they blocked my path.

I lowered my head and tried to slip past them, but someone grabbed my backpack.

“Where’s the rush?” Lindsey yanked me backward by the hair. “Your parents didn’t show up for the conference today, did they? I knew it. You’re an orphan.”

“I’m not.” I shook my head. “I have parents.”

“Oh, really?” Lindsey sneered, her eyes filled with contempt.

“Then where are they? What are their names? What do they do for a living? Why don’t you call them over and show us?”

I pressed my lips together and said nothing.

“What happened? Cat got your tongue? You were so full of yourself a minute ago.”

Lindsey shoved me hard.

“I hate liars like you. If you don’t have parents, just admit it. Why pretend otherwise?”

“I really do have—”

My explanation was drowned out by their laughter.

“Take her to the bathroom and teach her a lesson,” Lindsey ordered with a cold smile.

They dragged me into the girls’ restroom. Some students passing by witnessed what was happening, but they simply lowered their heads and hurried away.

Seeing that no one would intervene, Lindsey grew even bolder. She grabbed me by the back of my neck and slammed my head into the sink.

The icy water rushed into my nose. I struggled desperately, but I felt more hands pressing down on my back.

“Lying comes with a price.

“We’re going to make sure you remember this lesson. The next time you dare lie to us, you’d better think twice, you unwanted little liar.”

I couldn’t speak. My vision grew increasingly blurry, and just when I thought I was going to suffocate, they finally let go.

I collapsed onto the floor like a limp fish, coughing violently.

“Remember this. If you dare tell anyone a single word, next time we’ll do a lot worse than dunking your head in a sink.”

Lindsey crouched down and grabbed my chin.

“We have a hundred ways to make sure you can’t stay at this school.

“But you’re just an orphan. Even if you go blabbing about this, who’s going to believe you?”

They giggled as they took pictures of me in my miserable state. Then they sauntered out of the restroom, leaving me sitting alone on the floor, drenched from head to toe.

It was already dark by the time I dragged my soaking-wet body home.

When I took out my key and unlocked the front door, I made a deliberate effort to keep quiet.

“You’re home!” Mom called from the kitchen, poking her head out. “Why are you so late?”

“I…” I hesitated, unable to bring myself to tell her that the girls had held my head underwater in the restroom and nearly drowned me. “The parent-teacher conference today…”

Dad walked out of his study and adjusted his glasses.

“You need to be more understanding. It’s not a big deal that we didn’t attend your meeting. We have to avoid any appearance of favoritism.”

“But the other teachers’ children…” My voice grew quieter with every word.

“Our positions are different.” Mom wiped her hands and came over with a sigh. “Your father and I are school administrators. We have authority, and if people find out you’re our daughter, what if they accuse us of giving you special treatment?”

“Please try to understand us,” Dad added, coming over to pat my shoulder. “It wasn’t easy for us to get where we are. We have to set an example.

“You have no idea how many people are watching us. That’s why we must treat every student fairly and impartially. We can’t show you favoritism just because you’re our daughter.”

I had heard this explanation countless times, yet I could never find a way to argue against it. All I could do was nod.

“Why are you soaking wet?” Mom finally noticed my disheveled state. “Did you fall?”

I looked into her concerned eyes, and a pang of sadness swept through me. Before I knew it, I was blaming myself instead.

They were so busy, yet they still cared enough to worry about my wet clothes. Meanwhile, I had been sulking just because they hadn’t attended my parent-teacher meeting. I was being so unreasonable.

“I’m fine. I just had a little accident…”

“Did you have a falling-out with your classmates?” Dad asked, perceptively picking up on my hesitation.

Mom crouched down and took my icy hands in hers. “Whatever happened, you need to tell us. Don’t bottle things up.”

At that moment, all the hurt I had been holding back came spilling out, and tears streamed down my face.

“I was bullied.

“They held my head in the sink in the girls’ restroom. They called me a liar and said I was an orphan…”

I drifted through the world as a spirit for an indeterminate amount of time.I watched Lindsey and her friends’ parents weep bitterly in court, overwhelmed by regret.I watched the classmates who had once stood by indifferently or even joined in the mockery go their separate ways after graduation. Perhaps a flicker of guilt would occasionally cross some of their faces.I watched our school undergo a sweeping overhaul, implementing stricter anti-bullying policies and a more comprehensive system for monitoring students’ mental health.I watched online discussions about the tragedy gradually die down, replaced by newer trending topics. And all the while, I continued watching my parents.Dad had completely fallen apart.Stripped of the power and status that had once surrounded him, he seemed like a man whose spine had been ripped out.He tried contacting Mom, hoping they could talk, but she wouldn’t even answer his calls.Living alone in their now-empty house, he drank heavily and

I watched every step of the subsequent investigation and trial. The rooftop railing had fallen into disrepair. Its screws were rusted and loose, making its poor condition the immediate physical cause of my fall. But that did nothing to excuse Lindsey and her friends for unlawfully restraining me, using violence and intimidation against me, and placing me in an extremely dangerous situation.Lindsey, the ringleader, was sixteen years old. Her actions constituted intentional assault and negligent homicide. Given the severity of the circumstances and her lack of genuine remorse, she faced serious legal consequences. The other two girls, as accomplices, would not escape punishment either.News of my death soon reached the public.Dad had tried to suppress the story, but the truth couldn’t be kept under wraps forever. Some students had witnessed the bullying, parents had heard rumors, and school district officials had seen the events unfold with their own eyes. Before long, a headli

All the camera captured was the terror in my wide eyes and my futile struggles.Students passing by hurriedly lowered their heads and looked away.In the stairwell, they shoved me up the stairs. I kept pleading and screaming through my tears, but they only laughed. One moment, they yanked my hair; the next, they kicked my legs. Finally, we reached the rooftop. The footage clearly showed me collapsing to my knees as they dragged me toward the railing.Lindsey pointed down at the ground below, her expression arrogant and taunting.Together, the three girls forced my upper body over the railing. My desperate cries for help rang clearly through the classroom speakers.Mom lunged toward the screen, but she couldn’t stop the railing in the footage from coming l

“Principal Hayes.”The officer seemed to have overheard their conversation. He looked up.“What did you just say? What did you mean by minimizing the damage?”Dad’s expression stiffened, but he quickly replaced it with one of profound sorrow.“Officer, what I meant was that we’re all devastated by this tragedy. Our immediate priorities should be to uncover the truth, reassure the other students, and maintain order on campus.“Lindsey Parker is one of the outstanding students in her grade. She’s always excelled both academically and behaviorally. I believe what she told you.“As for Madison Hayes… perhaps she really was just a little introverted and sensitive.”He was actually defending Lindsey. While my body was still lying cold, before I had even been laid to rest, while Mom was drowning in grief, he was defending the person who caused my death. All for the sake of the school’s stability and the position he was so desperate to protect.Mom whipped around and glared at Dad. The wail of sirens grew louder as police cars approached, shattering the campus’s false sense of peace. My body was covered with a white sheet and carried away, while Mom was taken to the school nurse’s office. The police quickly cordoned off the area, began examining the scene, and questioned witnesses.Dad stood at the edge of the crowd, subtly kept apart from the others by Director Michael and the other officials. I watched helplessly as the ground rushed toward me.The last images frozen in my vision were Dad’s smile stiffening on his face, the folder slipping from Mom’s hands, and Lindsey and the other girls standing on the rooftop, their faces as pale as paper.THUD!After the dull impact, the world suddenly fell silent.I hovered in midair, looking down at my body lying twisted at a grotesque angle on the cold concrete. The moment blood began to spread across the ground—“Ahhh!”Screams finally erupted, and the orderly inspection descended into chaos.Mom stared blankly at my body, her lips trembling as though she wanted to say something but couldn’t make a sound. Her eyes widened. A second later, she swayed like a marionette with its strings cut and toppled straight backward.“Mrs. Hayes!”“Call an ambulance! Call the police!”The school district officials accompanying the inspection had gone deathly pale. They fumbled for their phones in a panic.Dad caught Mom as she fainted,
