Chapter 3

Author: River of Quiet
When I returned to school, I became even quieter.

As soon as I walked into the classroom, everyone looked at me before casually turning away, as though I were invisible.

I approached my desk and stared at the scene before me, my fists clenched.

My desk compartment was stuffed with all kinds of trash. A sticky liquid coated the entire desktop, and even my chair had been smeared with a layer of clear glue.

“Oh, my! Whose seat is this? Why is it so filthy?”

Lindsey’s voice rang out behind me.

The next second, the entire class burst into laughter.

I turned to leave, but Lindsey shoved me back into my seat. The glue immediately stuck to my school uniform skirt.

“Where do you think you’re going, little liar?” She leaned down and whispered in my ear. “This seat suits you perfectly.”

Another wave of laughter erupted around us.

Someone held up a phone and started recording. The camera flash was so bright that I could barely keep my eyes open.

“Look at how disgusting she is. No wonder nobody wants her.”

Lindsey raised her voice, sounding thoroughly pleased with herself.

“At yesterday’s parent-teacher conference, she was the only one whose parents didn’t show up. What do you think? Is she an orphan?”

“Orphan! Orphan! Orphan!”

Someone shouted the word, and others eagerly joined in.

Tears welled in my eyes, but I gritted my teeth and refused to cry.

I was about to start clearing the trash out of my desk when Lindsey suddenly lunged at me. She grabbed my head and violently shoved it into the pile of wastepaper and filth.

“If you love garbage so much, why not eat some?” She grabbed a handful of paper scraps mixed with the sticky liquid and tried to force them into my mouth.

I struggled desperately, muffled whimpers escaping my throat.

“What are you doing?!”

A familiar voice came from the classroom doorway.

Everyone froze.

Lindsey immediately released me and stepped back. In an instant, she plastered an innocent, well-behaved smile across her face.

My parents stood at the doorway, their expressions stern.

“What’s going on?” Mom asked, frowning as she looked at us.

“Mrs. Hayes. Principal Hayes.”

Lindsey pursed her lips in feigned grievance.

“Madison Hayes is so careless about cleanliness. We were told yesterday that school administrators would be visiting today, yet she still made such a mess of the classroom and her desk. Isn’t she making our class look bad?

“I told her to clean it up so it wouldn’t affect the school’s evaluation, but she refused to listen. Instead, she accused me of making a fuss over nothing. She even said…” Lindsey hesitated, lowering her voice as though she were reluctant to reveal the truth. “She said you two were personally involved with her, so you’d definitely take her side.

“She was slandering you like that, and I lost my temper for a moment, so I…”

“So you took matters into your own hands?” Dad asked, frowning.

“I’m sorry. I know I was wrong.”

Lindsey lowered her head, putting on a remorseful expression.

“I just didn’t want our school to earn a bad reputation with the visiting administrators. And I certainly didn’t want her going around ruining your reputations.

“After all, everyone knows that you, Principal Hayes, and Mrs. Hayes are the fairest people in the school.”

“That’s not what happened…” I choked out, overwhelmed by the injustice of it all. Instinctively, I looked toward my parents.

“She’s the one bullying me! They’ve been bullying me all along, Mom…”

I drifted through the world as a spirit for an indeterminate amount of time.I watched Lindsey and her friends’ parents weep bitterly in court, overwhelmed by regret.I watched the classmates who had once stood by indifferently or even joined in the mockery go their separate ways after graduation. Perhaps a flicker of guilt would occasionally cross some of their faces.I watched our school undergo a sweeping overhaul, implementing stricter anti-bullying policies and a more comprehensive system for monitoring students’ mental health.I watched online discussions about the tragedy gradually die down, replaced by newer trending topics. And all the while, I continued watching my parents.Dad had completely fallen apart.Stripped of the power and status that had once surrounded him, he seemed like a man whose spine had been ripped out.He tried contacting Mom, hoping they could talk, but she wouldn’t even answer his calls.Living alone in their now-empty house, he drank heavily and

I watched every step of the subsequent investigation and trial. The rooftop railing had fallen into disrepair. Its screws were rusted and loose, making its poor condition the immediate physical cause of my fall. But that did nothing to excuse Lindsey and her friends for unlawfully restraining me, using violence and intimidation against me, and placing me in an extremely dangerous situation.Lindsey, the ringleader, was sixteen years old. Her actions constituted intentional assault and negligent homicide. Given the severity of the circumstances and her lack of genuine remorse, she faced serious legal consequences. The other two girls, as accomplices, would not escape punishment either.News of my death soon reached the public.Dad had tried to suppress the story, but the truth couldn’t be kept under wraps forever. Some students had witnessed the bullying, parents had heard rumors, and school district officials had seen the events unfold with their own eyes. Before long, a headli

The tablet was connected to the classroom’s multimedia display. On the screen, I watched Lindsey and her friends drag me out of the classroom, half-pulling and half-hauling me along. One of them clamped a hand over my mouth. All the camera captured was the terror in my wide eyes and my futile struggles.Students passing by hurriedly lowered their heads and looked away.In the stairwell, they shoved me up the stairs. I kept pleading and screaming through my tears, but they only laughed. One moment, they yanked my hair; the next, they kicked my legs. Finally, we reached the rooftop. The footage clearly showed me collapsing to my knees as they dragged me toward the railing.Lindsey pointed down at the ground below, her expression arrogant and taunting.Together, the three girls forced my upper body over the railing. My desperate cries for help rang clearly through the classroom speakers.Mom lunged toward the screen, but she couldn’t stop the railing in the footage from coming l

“Principal Hayes.”The officer seemed to have overheard their conversation. He looked up.“What did you just say? What did you mean by minimizing the damage?”Dad’s expression stiffened, but he quickly replaced it with one of profound sorrow.“Officer, what I meant was that we’re all devastated by this tragedy. Our immediate priorities should be to uncover the truth, reassure the other students, and maintain order on campus.“Lindsey Parker is one of the outstanding students in her grade. She’s always excelled both academically and behaviorally. I believe what she told you.“As for Madison Hayes… perhaps she really was just a little introverted and sensitive.”He was actually defending Lindsey. While my body was still lying cold, before I had even been laid to rest, while Mom was drowning in grief, he was defending the person who caused my death. All for the sake of the school’s stability and the position he was so desperate to protect.Mom whipped around and glared at Dad. The wail of sirens grew louder as police cars approached, shattering the campus’s false sense of peace. My body was covered with a white sheet and carried away, while Mom was taken to the school nurse’s office. The police quickly cordoned off the area, began examining the scene, and questioned witnesses.Dad stood at the edge of the crowd, subtly kept apart from the others by Director Michael and the other officials. His face was livid, and his eyes darkened as he watched the officers rushing about. My soul drifted helplessly through the air, following a group of officers heading toward the classroom building.I knew they were going to investigate my class. The classroom was no longer filled with the noise and laughter from earlier. A deathly silence hung over everyone.Lindsey Parker and her two followers sat at their desks, their faces frighteningly pale and their bodies trembling slightly. The other students kept their heads down, too afraid to speak. I watched helplessly as the ground rushed toward me.The last images frozen in my vision were Dad’s smile stiffening on his face, the folder slipping from Mom’s hands, and Lindsey and the other girls standing on the rooftop, their faces as pale as paper.THUD!After the dull impact, the world suddenly fell silent.I hovered in midair, looking down at my body lying twisted at a grotesque angle on the cold concrete. The moment blood began to spread across the ground—“Ahhh!”Screams finally erupted, and the orderly inspection descended into chaos.Mom stared blankly at my body, her lips trembling as though she wanted to say something but couldn’t make a sound. Her eyes widened. A second later, she swayed like a marionette with its strings cut and toppled straight backward.“Mrs. Hayes!”“Call an ambulance! Call the police!”The school district officials accompanying the inspection had gone deathly pale. They fumbled for their phones in a panic.Dad caught Mom as she fainted,
