Chapter 4

Autor: River of Quiet
“Shut up!” Mom snapped, cutting me off. Her face instantly turned livid. “Who are you calling Mom? Stop pretending we’re related!”

Dad looked at me coldly, too.

“Lindsey is right. Mrs. Hayes and I treat every student equally at school. We will never show favoritism for any reason.”

The entire classroom fell silent as everyone watched the spectacle unfold.

“But they really are bullying me…” I pleaded, practically begging them to listen. “They shoved my head into the garbage and forced me to eat—”

“Enough!” Dad raised his voice, his face twisted with anger.

“Madison Hayes, your desk really is a mess. It reflects badly on our class. Although Lindsey Parker went about it the wrong way, her intentions were good.”

“Clean up the classroom yourself,” Mom ordered, giving me a cold look. “As punishment, you’ll be responsible for classroom duty every day for the next month.”

With that, they left the classroom without sparing me another glance.

The moment they were out of sight, the classroom erupted in laughter.

Lindsey grabbed me by the hair and dragged me to the middle of the room.

“I just said it on a whim, and you actually had the nerve to call her Mom?

“If that’s the case, why not go ahead and call the principal Dad?

“Want me to take you to them? You can get on your knees and beg them to acknowledge you as their daughter. Let’s see if they’ll help you then!”

“I didn’t…” My scalp burned with pain, and I instinctively struggled to get free.

“Were you about to tattle on us just now?”

Lindsey slapped me across the face.

“Looks like the last lesson wasn’t enough for you.”

She shot a glance at her two followers.

“You’re afraid of heights, right? Perfect. Let’s head to the rooftop and have a little chat.”

My eyes widened in horror.

“N-No… please…”

But no one listened. They dragged me out of the classroom, half carrying and half pulling me along. They clamped a hand over my mouth and forced me up to the rooftop.

“Please… let me go…” The sheer height made my knees buckle, and I collapsed to the ground, crying and begging them to stop.

But Lindsey seemed to find my terror entertaining. Her excitement only grew as she grabbed me by the hair and dragged me toward the railing.

“Look at that view. Isn’t it beautiful? What do you think would happen if we threw you off here? We could just say you were too emotionally fragile and jumped.”

“No! Please! I’m begging you! Just leave me alone!”

I screamed, but the three girls pinned me against the railing, forcing me to look down.

Our school’s classroom building was the tallest structure on campus, standing a full twenty-two stories high. One glance down was enough to churn my stomach.

Out of the corner of my eye, I spotted a small plaza below. Several people in suits were gathered there, and my parents appeared to be explaining something to them.

“Help! Somebody, help me!”

I screamed with all my strength, but from this height, my cries were useless.

Lindsey slapped me hard across the face.

“What are you yelling for?

“Still haven’t had enough? Fine. Let’s give you a better look!”

They pushed my entire upper body over the railing. My whole body went rigid with terror. I didn’t dare struggle. I could only cling desperately to the railing, refusing to let go.

Suddenly, the railing beneath me let out a sharp creak.

The next second, the screws came loose, and the railing lurched outward.

Lindsey and her followers instinctively let go of me and stumbled backward, screaming.

My face drained of all color as I desperately reached for something to grab. But with nothing left to support it, the railing gave way beneath my hands, sending me plunging straight down.

I saw the crowd below finally look up.

At that very moment, my parents’ gazes landed on me. A second later, their faces filled with horror.

I drifted through the world as a spirit for an indeterminate amount of time.I watched Lindsey and her friends’ parents weep bitterly in court, overwhelmed by regret.I watched the classmates who had once stood by indifferently or even joined in the mockery go their separate ways after graduation. Perhaps a flicker of guilt would occasionally cross some of their faces.I watched our school undergo a sweeping overhaul, implementing stricter anti-bullying policies and a more comprehensive system for monitoring students’ mental health.I watched online discussions about the tragedy gradually die down, replaced by newer trending topics. And all the while, I continued watching my parents.Dad had completely fallen apart.Stripped of the power and status that had once surrounded him, he seemed like a man whose spine had been ripped out.He tried contacting Mom, hoping they could talk, but she wouldn’t even answer his calls.Living alone in their now-empty house, he drank heavily and

I watched every step of the subsequent investigation and trial. The rooftop railing had fallen into disrepair. Its screws were rusted and loose, making its poor condition the immediate physical cause of my fall. But that did nothing to excuse Lindsey and her friends for unlawfully restraining me, using violence and intimidation against me, and placing me in an extremely dangerous situation.Lindsey, the ringleader, was sixteen years old. Her actions constituted intentional assault and negligent homicide. Given the severity of the circumstances and her lack of genuine remorse, she faced serious legal consequences. The other two girls, as accomplices, would not escape punishment either.News of my death soon reached the public.Dad had tried to suppress the story, but the truth couldn’t be kept under wraps forever. Some students had witnessed the bullying, parents had heard rumors, and school district officials had seen the events unfold with their own eyes. Before long, a headli

“Principal Hayes.”The officer seemed to have overheard their conversation. He looked up.“What did you just say? What did you mean by minimizing the damage?”Dad’s expression stiffened, but he quickly replaced it with one of profound sorrow.“Officer, what I meant was that we’re all devastated by this tragedy. Our immediate priorities should be to uncover the truth, reassure the other students, and maintain order on campus.“Lindsey Parker is one of the outstanding students in her grade. She’s always excelled both academically and behaviorally. I believe what she told you.“As for Madison Hayes… perhaps she really was just a little introverted and sensitive.”He was actually defending Lindsey. While my body was still lying cold, before I had even been laid to rest, while Mom was drowning in grief, he was defending the person who caused my death. All for the sake of the school’s stability and the position he was so desperate to protect.Mom whipped around and glared at Dad. I watched helplessly as the ground rushed toward me.The last images frozen in my vision were Dad’s smile stiffening on his face, the folder slipping from Mom’s hands, and Lindsey and the other girls standing on the rooftop, their faces as pale as paper.THUD!After the dull impact, the world suddenly fell silent.I hovered in midair, looking down at my body lying twisted at a grotesque angle on the cold concrete. The moment blood began to spread across the ground—“Ahhh!”Screams finally erupted, and the orderly inspection descended into chaos.Mom stared blankly at my body, her lips trembling as though she wanted to say something but couldn’t make a sound. Her eyes widened. A second later, she swayed like a marionette with its strings cut and toppled straight backward.“Mrs. Hayes!”“Call an ambulance!
