Chapter 2

Author: Seren
After the blast, the bullet grazed my cheek and punched straight through the back seat.

A few inches to the left, and I would have died right there.

I fought to stay calm, flooring the gas, breaking through the blockade.

By the time I lost them, dawn had broken.

I sat frozen in the car for a long time, hands gripping the wheel, body shaking beyond my control.

Once my heartbeat settled, I drove to the nearest pawnshop and pushed the necklace across the counter.

After trading it for cash, I found someone to repair my phone.

The signal bars lit up again. I stared at the empty screen and suddenly felt so tired.

My brother and sister ran the family's massive operations, living large.

And yet, we were all Father's children.

I had sunk so low that even the money to fix my phone came from pawning the only old thing I had left.

I dragged myself back to the estate, only to walk in on Father standing at his desk, discussing defensive gear and personal bodyguards for my brother and sister with the butler.

When he saw me, he instinctively hid the list behind his back, never once noticing the wound on my face.

"These gear sets come in two. Perfect for the two of them. Otherwise it won't split evenly, and your brother and sister will start another fight."

"But..."

He paused, picked up a dagger from the edge of the desk, a freebie from a supplier, and held it out to me like charity.

"They don't need this. Take it for self defense."

Looking at that rusted dagger, I smiled and avoided his hand.

"Father, you forgot."

"Three years ago, when I took that blade for you during the assassination, it left me with some trauma."

"The moment I touch anything sharp, my hands shake and I can't stop them."

"I can't hold a blade, Father."

Father froze. For a long moment, he said nothing. Something like guilt flickered through his eyes.

But only for an instant.

From the second floor, my sister's complaining voice drifted down.

Father turned away immediately, loudly soothing her as he brushed past me without a second thought.

Watching him walk away, my heart ached like it was being stabbed with needles.

I didn't even have the strength left to cry.

I headed to my small room.

I dragged the old suitcase out from under the bed and shoved a few simple clothes into it.

I'd barely finished when an argument erupted outside.

My sister came down the stairs and tore into the butler, finger pointed right at his nose.

"Why does Luca get one more bodyguard than me? That's not fair!"

The butler, sweating bullets, bowed his head and tried desperately to explain.

"Miss, the district the young master oversees has had multiple crimes recently. The risk level is higher, so..."

"I don't care!" Her voice pitched higher, cutting him off without mercy.

"We agreed on absolute fairness. Not one less!"

Father walked over, coat draped on his shoulders, brows knitted tight.

After hearing her complaint, he crouched down and soothed her in a low voice:

"Sophia, that was Daddy's oversight. Daddy apologizes."

Then he turned to the butler and said coldly:

"Doesn't Lily still have a bodyguard? Give that one to Sophia."

"She only ever stays in the estate anyway. Nothing worth protecting."

The moment those words landed, the hallway went quiet for a few seconds. The argument fizzled out.

My sister smiled smugly and clicked her heels back to her room.

Father and the butler shook their heads with a laugh and left the living room.

Only me. Standing at the peephole, trembling all over.

She only stays in the estate.

Nothing worth protecting.

But if I hadn't been lucky, I would have died out there just now.

A wave of sorrow washed over me.

The truth was, I'd known for a long time. In this family, I was the wound Father refused to mention.

Since I was small, Father had been cold to me.

He would cradle my brother and sister in his arms with endless affection, yet he would never even look me in the eye.

Whenever I tried to get close, to hold his hand, he would instinctively pull away and walk off without looking back.

The butler told me my mother died in childbirth having me. After that, Father never remarried.

All these years, I'd fought so hard, trying to earn even the smallest bit of recognition.

I'd even thrown myself in front of a blade for Father during an assassination.

And still, their prejudice never washed clean.

Because I always reminded Father of my mother.

Because I was a born "sinner."

...

I took a deep breath and buried the bitterness down deep.

I kept telling myself. Just three more days. That's all.

In Hollywood, the film Ella and I made together was another massive success.I handled the careful crafting of the story. She handled coordinating the actors, polishing every shot.We were like natural born partners, perfectly covering each other's weak spots. At any moment, each other's most trusted anchor.1.2 billion in global box office. Fifty thousand reviews. That was the first answer we delivered after signing with Hollywood. In our twenties, results like that were nothing short of miraculous. After that, our careers got busier and busier. We were constantly flying around the world, taking on offers.Occasionally, I would go back to Italy, back to the city where the Moretti family was based.I even attended a seminar less than five kilometers from the estate. But I didn't care. Not even a little. After all, once life fills up, the things that don't matter get filtered out on their own.Until one day, three years later. Ella and I had just wrapped up a deal and returned to our to

The moment I saw Ella, it was like I'd gone back to childhood.Back then, Anthony always took me outside the estate to play, and Ella was the first person I ever met. My only friend. Our greatest joy was using a broken old film camera we'd picked up from the trash, pretending we were making movies.Ella always said I was born to be a great screenwriter.I was always good at watching everything around me.Bickering couples, old people holding hands, kids running wild.Even a single falling leaf could be turned into a story in my head.Ella and I hooked pinkies and swore we'd go to film school together when we grew up.But as I got older, the mafia's rules and restraints kept piling onto my shoulders. Even leaving the estate had to be controlled. The time I spent with Ella grew less and less. Not long after, Ella moved away. Before she left, she pressed a slip of paper into my hand with her phone number on it."Lily, don't forget our movie dream."But once you grow up, dreams become an u

After a long stretch of agonized screams, the study fell back into dead silence.Once Luca and Sophia were dragged away, old Moretti slumped against the back of his chair, his vision dimming.Suddenly, he thought of Lily. All these years, he had always carried some guilt toward Lily. That girl was always quiet. Always obedient.Even when Luca and Sophia were at each other's throats, it was always her who stepped in to mediate, who took the blame for her siblings.Three years ago, during that assassination, it was Lily who noticed the gun hidden against the killer's chest. It was her who threw herself into the fight. At the time, looking at Lily wounded in that hospital bed, something in him had stirred. He had wanted to add Lily's name to the list of heir candidates at the family council. But when Luca and Sophia found out, they raised hell for days."That's not fair! She killed Mom. What gives her the right to compete with us?""If you dare put her name on that list, we'll take our fo

After the social banquet ended, Lily never showed up again.Old Moretti didn't pay it any mind.In his eyes, this daughter would do what she always did. Hide in some corner, swallow her hurt, and then come back like a good girl. Then go right back to being the buffer between his two heirs. That was when his men pushed the door open, faces pale, holding an investigation file."Don, we've finished looking into the ambush on the two heirs a few days ago.""We found the mole. It was Miss Sophia..."Father's body lurched. He nearly collapsed to the floor, deep terror in his voice."Impossible. They're my own flesh and blood. How could they do something this insane!""Besides, they left together that night..."His man didn't argue. He simply spread a stack of intercepted messages across the desk. The conversations were laid out clear as day, every word a knife driving into old Moretti's chest. The night of the ambush, Sophia had leaked Luca's location to a rival gang. The deal was simple. A few days later, the social banquet was held as scheduled. That day also happened to be my twentieth birthday. And it would be my last birthday spent in the Moretti family.Even though I had already made up my mind to leave, there was still a small flicker of hope in my heart.Maybe Father remembered my birthday.Maybe at the banquet, he would set aside a moment to celebrate with me.Even just a few minutes. But all my fantasies and expectations turned laughable the moment reality arrived. The big screen played the film I had made. The credits at the end bore Luca's name.Sophia, in a lavish gown, stood center stage on the platform, soaking in everyone's praise. And me? I had been told to change into a black uniform.Carrying a heavy tray of drinks, weaving through the crowd, doing the same work as the servants. After a whole night of running around, I stopped in a corner to catch my breath, and happened to overhear Father chatting with someone. One of the uncles glanced at me and sig

The next morning, I was woken by hurried footsteps.Father stood in the main hall, face grave, listening to his men report."Don, we intercepted a few messages. Someone leaked the young master's and young lady's locations. That's what led to yesterday evening's ambush.""There's a mole in the family..."Father's face went dark in an instant. He slammed his palm on the table, barely containing his fury."The social banquet is in two days. This cannot get out. If it does, we become a laughingstock to every other family!""Lock down the estate. Investigate quietly. Without a pass authorized by me, no one leaves. Not a single step!"Standing at my door, my heart clenched hard.I'd already set a meeting point with Ella. But if I couldn't get out of the estate, the whole plan fell apart.I racked my brain all day, drowning in anxiety.By evening, another fight broke out in the main hall.My brother kicked over a chair, fury in his voice."Why is Sophia the only one giving a speech at the ban
