Chapter 1

Walking back to my room alone, my phone suddenly lost signal.

That was when the butler walked in.

He looked at me and let out a sigh, his tone helpless.

"Miss Lily, the Don asked me to pass this along..."

"The family's income for this month is still being reconciled. He says you're not to touch a single cent in the accounts for now."

"All the profits go to your brother and sister, split clean down the middle. If you take any, it breaks the balance."

It felt like ants were crawling all over my heart. My body started trembling before I even realized it.

Instinctively, I wanted to ask.

What about me?

But in the end, I just said calmly to the butler:

"Okay. I understand. Thank you for letting me know."

After all, I'd asked that question countless times before.

No one ever cared.

As if it were only natural. As if the Moretti family's resources were never supposed to include me.

I put my phone away and checked the cards under my name.

Spending privileges had been completely frozen by Father.

I searched the empty room.

In the end, all I found was an old necklace I'd worn years ago, tucked in the corner of a drawer.

I slipped it into my pocket, planning to pawn it tomorrow for some traveling money.

Then I lay down on the bed, and the tears came without warning.

I barely managed to drift off, but somewhere in the middle of the night, the screech of brakes outside jolted me awake.

I opened my eyes.

Outside, voices were clamoring. Father, my brother, and my sister were walking back toward the estate, faces dark as storm clouds.

My door was kicked open. My sister stormed to my bedside and flung a few mud soaked jackets right into my face.

She crossed her arms and snapped at me impatiently.

"What are you staring at? Take these to the laundry room!"

The jackets were caked with mud, and the sticky filth clung to my hair.

I could barely keep my eyes open. Weakly, I tried to explain:

"It's so late. Can I deal with it first thing in the morning?"

Her voice pitched higher.

"If you don't want to do it, just say so. Don't make excuses!"

My brother walked in then too.

Face cold, he kicked two boxes of discarded gear over to the side of my bed.

"After you deal with her clothes, you're doing my work too. No dawdling."

"We got ambushed during a territory check just now. This gear is what's left after the firefight. Deal with it. Now."

The words had barely landed when Father walked in, cigar clamped between his teeth, face like iron.

He shot an impatient glance at me on the bed and went straight to scolding.

"The Moretti family values fairness above all."

"Your brother and sister bleed on the front lines for this family. What gives you the right to hide back here and live easy?"

"You can't even handle a little cleanup work without pushing it off. How is that fair to them?"

Looking at that self righteous expression, I almost wanted to laugh.

So this was how the Moretti family calculated fairness. By occasion.

When it came to power and territory, my brother and sister got absolute fairness.

When it came to responsibility, fairness finally landed on me.

I didn't waste my breath. I crouched down in silence, gathered the pile of clothes, and headed to the laundry room.

Then, under cover of darkness, I hauled the two boxes of gear into the car and drove out of the district to destroy them.

Once in the car, Ella's message finally popped up.

"Lily, I'll pick you up on Maple Avenue in three days. Keep in touch."

I was about to reply, but my phone screen kept freezing, and it only made my already exhausted mood worse.

The car reached the outskirts. Everything around was dead quiet.

I was just about to get out and unload the cargo.

But in the rearview mirror, a black sedan had suddenly appeared. The emblem on its hood sent a chill straight down my spine.

It was the rival family that had ambushed my brother and sister earlier. They hadn't gone far.

"Bang—"

The gunshot came without warning. Bullets slammed into the car door in a dense barrage.

A stray round shattered the window and flew straight at my face.

In Hollywood, the film Ella and I made together was another massive success.I handled the careful crafting of the story. She handled coordinating the actors, polishing every shot.We were like natural born partners, perfectly covering each other's weak spots. At any moment, each other's most trusted anchor.1.2 billion in global box office. Fifty thousand reviews. That was the first answer we delivered after signing with Hollywood. In our twenties, results like that were nothing short of miraculous. After that, our careers got busier and busier. We were constantly flying around the world, taking on offers.Occasionally, I would go back to Italy, back to the city where the Moretti family was based.I even attended a seminar less than five kilometers from the estate. But I didn't care. Not even a little. After all, once life fills up, the things that don't matter get filtered out on their own.Until one day, three years later. The moment I saw Ella, it was like I'd gone back to childhood.Back then, Anthony always took me outside the estate to play, and Ella was the first person I ever met. My only friend. Our greatest joy was using a broken old film camera we'd picked up from the trash, pretending we were making movies.Ella always said I was born to be a great screenwriter.I was always good at watching everything around me.Bickering couples, old people holding hands, kids running wild.Even a single falling leaf could be turned into a story in my head.Ella and I hooked pinkies and swore we'd go to film school together when we grew up.But as I got older, the mafia's rules and restraints kept piling onto my shoulders. Even leaving the estate had to be controlled. The time I spent with Ella grew less and less. Not long after, Ella moved away. Before she left, she pressed a slip of paper into my hand with her phone number on it."Lily, don't forget our movie dream."But once you grow up, dreams become an u

After a long stretch of agonized screams, the study fell back into dead silence.Once Luca and Sophia were dragged away, old Moretti slumped against the back of his chair, his vision dimming.Suddenly, he thought of Lily. All these years, he had always carried some guilt toward Lily. That girl was always quiet. Always obedient.Even when Luca and Sophia were at each other's throats, it was always her who stepped in to mediate, who took the blame for her siblings.Three years ago, during that assassination, it was Lily who noticed the gun hidden against the killer's chest. It was her who threw herself into the fight. At the time, looking at Lily wounded in that hospital bed, something in him had stirred. He had wanted to add Lily's name to the list of heir candidates at the family council. But when Luca and Sophia found out, they raised hell for days."That's not fair! She killed Mom. What gives her the right to compete with us?""If you dare put her name on that list, we'll take our fo

After the social banquet ended, Lily never showed up again.Old Moretti didn't pay it any mind.In his eyes, this daughter would do what she always did. Hide in some corner, swallow her hurt, and then come back like a good girl. Then go right back to being the buffer between his two heirs. That was when his men pushed the door open, faces pale, holding an investigation file."Don, we've finished looking into the ambush on the two heirs a few days ago.""We found the mole. It was Miss Sophia..."Father's body lurched. He nearly collapsed to the floor, deep terror in his voice."Impossible. They're my own flesh and blood. How could they do something this insane!""Besides, they left together that night..."His man didn't argue. He simply spread a stack of intercepted messages across the desk. The conversations were laid out clear as day, every word a knife driving into old Moretti's chest. The night of the ambush, Sophia had leaked Luca's location to a rival gang. The deal was simple. A few days later, the social banquet was held as scheduled. That day also happened to be my twentieth birthday. And it would be my last birthday spent in the Moretti family.Even though I had already made up my mind to leave, there was still a small flicker of hope in my heart.Maybe Father remembered my birthday.Maybe at the banquet, he would set aside a moment to celebrate with me.Even just a few minutes. But all my fantasies and expectations turned laughable the moment reality arrived. The big screen played the film I had made. The credits at the end bore Luca's name.Sophia, in a lavish gown, stood center stage on the platform, soaking in everyone's praise. And me? I had been told to change into a black uniform.Carrying a heavy tray of drinks, weaving through the crowd, doing the same work as the servants. After a whole night of running around, I stopped in a corner to catch my breath, and happened to overhear Father chatting with someone. One of the uncles glanced at me and sig

The next morning, I was woken by hurried footsteps.Father stood in the main hall, face grave, listening to his men report."Don, we intercepted a few messages. Someone leaked the young master's and young lady's locations. That's what led to yesterday evening's ambush.""There's a mole in the family..."Father's face went dark in an instant. He slammed his palm on the table, barely containing his fury."The social banquet is in two days. This cannot get out. If it does, we become a laughingstock to every other family!""Lock down the estate. Investigate quietly. Without a pass authorized by me, no one leaves. Not a single step!"Standing at my door, my heart clenched hard.I'd already set a meeting point with Ella. But if I couldn't get out of the estate, the whole plan fell apart.I racked my brain all day, drowning in anxiety.By evening, another fight broke out in the main hall.My brother kicked over a chair, fury in his voice."Why is Sophia the only one giving a speech at the ban
