•Draven•

“You’re late.” A grumpy masculine voice greeted me as I stepped into my penthouse.

“Who let you in here?” I narrowed my eyes when a whirring sound filled the room, and in the next second, an elderly man sitting on an electric wheelchair appeared in front of me.

“Boy, I own this city. I can enter anywhere I want.” Grandpa William said with a gruff tone, the smug look on his aged features deepened.

“I’m not a boy.” I kicked my shoes off and walked into the house, going past the man like he wasn’t here with me.

“Where are you going?” Grandpa William yelled after me.

“To sleep.” I halted.

“Why?”

“Because I’m made of organs and blood vessels that have been pumping energy all day and need a break.” A snappy response to the question rolled out of my mouth.

“Sit down. I have something to tell you.” Grandpa William drove his wheelchair to the sitting area, expecting me to follow him.

I didn’t, at first. I watched him wait on me till his glower penetrated through my skin and began pricking me in an uncomfortable manner.

“What is it?” I said with a sigh, plopping down on a chair.

He grunted, then fished an e-cig from his breast pocket as well as a neatly folded paper. He handed the paper to me without a word and sucked on the e-cig.

I stared at him suspiciously before unraveling the paper to read it.

“Went to the hospital recently, I have lung cancer.” Grandpa William puffed out a circular cloud.

“What the fuck?” I jerked up from the chair I had just settled down on. My eyes went wide at the medical report in my hand and the words that just went through my ears.

“Mn, Doctor said I won’t last long.”

“... How long do you have?” My voice softened. My grip on the report tightened, squeezing the sides of the paper in the process.

“A year, two years, maybe three if I stop smoking now.” Grandpa William snorted, then puffed out dense fumes.

“You’re shitting me, aren’t you? How could you have cancer and be so lax about the fact that you’re going to die? What the hell is wrong with you??” I flung the report to the ground in anger.

“What do you want me to do about it? Cry? I did enough of that when your wench of a grandma disappeared with half my fortune and some youngling.” Grandpa William’s face contorted darkly at the memory.

“I also didn’t tell you about it so you can lecture me about how to live my last days…” A pause set in.

I suddenly had a bad premonition.

“Boy, I need you to clear up your act and start your own family.” Grandpa William put away his e-cig.

My facial expression crumbled up.

“Don’t make that face. With me gone, you’ll be the only Lockwood in the city. I can’t risk the fate of the company in your dirty hands alone. Get a wife and a kid before I’m six feet under.”

“I should’ve known. Old man, this medical report should be fake, right? You just want to get me married by all means so you can—”

“Cough cough,” a breathless cough interrupted me. Grandpa William wheezed and gasped for air for a few seconds before stabilizing.

“The report is real. So is my desire to have great grandchildren. I’m counting on you, boy. By the end of this year, there should be a missus in your life. You hear me?” Grandpa William spoke in finality.

“It’s the least you can do for me before I go.”

The medical report lying on the floor entered my eyes at that moment. My fists clenched unconsciously, then a particular image appeared in my head, provoking a small smile on my lips.

“I hear you...”

•Odette•

“They took away my house.”

I got a call from my mother, and had told me to hurry down to the family house.

I foolishly thought she missed me and that we were finally going to spend quality time with each other after everything that’d happened recently. I was wrong.

She’d only wanted me to come so I could hand over my house key to Silver. Why? Because Silver needed it. It was closer to the office and much more spacious than her room in the family house.

Apparently, she needed lots of space to be creative and do stuff now that she was joining the company.

I couldn’t even defend my home because it wasn’t completely mine. It had been a gift from my mother. If she wanted to give it to someone else, there was nothing I could do.

“I know they took your house away, Odette. You’ve said it like ten times since you walked in here.” Nikki cozied up to me on the lounge chair.

Now that I had found myself without my favorite house, I didn’t feel like doing anything. I just happened to turn up at Nikki’s older brother’s bar so I could calm my nerves.

“I still can’t believe it, and each time I say it out loud, it seems to sink in a little.” I explained.

“It’s going to be fine. Just have a drink.” Nikki poured wine into my glass and handed it to me.

I only took a sip before setting it on the table. “Soon enough, she’s going to need my organs and they’re going to give it to her with the way things are going now.”

The plot of a dogblood drama cooked up in my head.

“Stop it, Odette,” Nikki laughed. I wasn’t telling a joke.

Silver had ‘needed’ one of my cars the other day and got my parents to hand her the key. Before that, it was a jewelry box that Dad had gotten me.

She needed it too.

What next? My kidney?

“I’m not kidding. It’s so frustrating.” I pushed my hair back and took a sip of wine.

My bladder suddenly acted up, and I rose from my seat.

“Where are you going?” Nikki questioned.

“Restroom.”

I stepped out of our cube and headed towards the ladies’ room. The clothes on my body weren’t really bar casual and instead work formals. So it took me a while to get them in order so I could pee.

After I was done using the toilet, I sprinkled water on my face and stared at my reflection in the mirror.

Ever since Silver came into my life, I’ve not had a good night’s rest. Traces of dark circles were underneath my brown eyes and my cheekbones appeared more pronounced.

God, I was losing weight.

I sighed and looked away from the mirror. I couldn’t let Silver keep taking things from me. I needed to get myself back.

I strutted out of the restroom, and I hadn’t even completed my first step when my body went rigid because of a familiar figure hanging close by.

“Hello, Odette Valmont.”

•Odette•With the use of my peripheral vision, I watched Draven, finding it difficult to peel my eyes off him. We were seated at the back of one of his cars on the way to meet with his grandfather for dinner.I should be nervous. I should be thinking of how to perfect a loving act with Draven in front of the man. Yet, all I could think about was two nights ago.An incident that I half remembered. I couldn’t remember from the point where Draven had reminded me to pick up my purse in the private lounge. I couldn’t remember how I got home.I damn well couldn’t remember who had taken off my heels and given me a foot massage. Even though I couldn’t remember, I knew that it wouldn’t be anyone other than Draven.Only he would know my address and how to get into my house without my personal assistance. As crazy and criminal as he was. I never thought he would care about me enough to the point where he would rub my feet. I must have been in pain, no doubt about that. Every day in heels from d

  • The Fake Heiress’s Ruthless CEO   17: Lash Serum

•Draven•My right lash line hurt like crazy after getting the lashes there plucked by a drunk Odette Valmont. I exhaled through my mouth, trying to ease the pain.I stared at Odette’s dewy eyes and pouty pink lips after she answered my question. She didn’t even act like she’d done any wrong. My lack of follow-up words made her cock her head to one side, letting her thick brown hair cover the right side of her face.“What lash serum do you use?” she asked, her light brown eyes growing brighter as she fixated on my own eyes; my lashes, probably.“Odette’s personal lash-growing serum.” I answered without thinking.“Really??” She bounced on her toes, excited to be told what she must consider a super top secret.“No. That’s a lie.” I pulled her closer to me and stretched a hand to stop an incoming cab.“How could you?” Odette spoke with a betrayed tone.I didn’t look at her because I had already pictured her face in my head, and just the imaginary visuals could send me spiralling. “Keep

  • The Fake Heiress’s Ruthless CEO   16: Goody-two-shoes

•Odette•It happened in my first year of high school. My parents had been all up in my business at the time, breathing down on my neck. And that should have been around the time I started to do things in the company, creating my personal designs and refining the ideas I found old in Eve.Of course I hadn’t been paying attention to boys and likes. Even though everyone my age was. My parents had it engraved into my head that I was going to get married to Tristen no matter what.Playing around would only get me in trouble and give me hopes that would get crushed in the long run. I believed them, I obeyed them.Which was why I sent away every boy who came my way. “I have a marriage partner already. Please, find someone else to like.”I had said these words almost a thousand times in my youth. Some of the boys I said then to had just been naturally attracted to me. Most had been attracted to my last name. Either way, I couldn’t be with them.Henry Hawk had come into my life in an interes

•Odette•My hands were tense on the steering wheel as I parked my car. It was a different one from the car I’d driven to see my father days ago.I couldn’t ride that one anymore.A lump formed in my throat as the frightening memory refreshed in my head. They knew my secret? A secret that I’d suppressed so deeply in the back of my mind that I could hardly even remember the details? That one?Fuck whoever thought they could threaten me.I grabbed my purse and alighted from the car. I was dressed in a formal blue gown this evening that went off the shoulder. The length ended around my knees and had a long slit at the back. The unreasonably high heels on my feet were killing me as I strutted, probably because I’ve been on them all day, going from place to place to personally inform and invite people to the wedding. All that, just to have Draven ring me to tell me he wanted me to meet up with his closest friends who’d be present at the wedding. I was to act as naturally as possible. I w

•Draven•“Are we really your friends?” Henry whined, aggrieved, before emptying a shot of vodka. He planted the glass on the drinks table and leaned over to rest his head on my shoulder. His big curly brown hair found its way to my mouth. I frowned and shoved him with my elbow.“Don’t touch me.” The warning was filled with irritation. If the kid knew better he’d behave himself. However, he didn’t.He brought his legs up to the leathery cushion, squeezing his lean build as he knelt on the chair. Just so he could grab my left arm tightly and act spoiled. “Rave, I can’t believe you would do this to us. You don’t love us anymore because of her, right? And you never even told us about her!” While prying off Henry’s lean fingers from my arm, his older cousin, who was the last person in the private lounge with us, spoke up.“Stop being annoying, Hen. This is literally the reason why Rave didn’t tell you in particular about Odette.” Adrian said monotonously, wearing his signature straight

  • The Fake Heiress’s Ruthless CEO   13: Are You?

•Odette•After leaving the garden, I calmly walked into the mansion, navigating through the walkways to get to my father’s study while my heart drummed loudly against my chest. As much as I hated Silver, her independent opinion and actions meant nothing to me. The only things that mattered to me were the reactions and opinions of my parents. Before Silver came into our lives, I used to think that I knew them best. That I could predict their movements and decisions. I was wrong.I knocked on the mahogany door of my father’s private study first before announcing my arrival.“Father, it’s me. Odette.” The fear that I thought I could suppress surfaced when I spoke with a weak voice.Ten whole seconds passed—I counted—before Father granted me the permission to step into his study. I learnt the hard way as a kid that I needed verbal permission before stepping foot into this private territory of his.Even grown, my hand still trembled as I turned open the knob and stepped into the room.
