After leaving the garden, I calmly walked into the mansion, navigating through the walkways to get to my father’s study while my heart drummed loudly against my chest. As much as I hated Silver, her independent opinion and actions meant nothing to me. The only things that mattered to me were the reactions and opinions of my parents. Before Silver came into our lives, I used to think that I knew them best. That I could predict their movements and decisions. I was wrong. I knocked on the mahogany door of my father’s private study first before announcing my arrival. “Father, it’s me. Odette.” The fear that I thought I could suppress surfaced when I spoke with a weak voice. Ten whole seconds passed—I counted—before Father granted me the permission to step into his study. I learnt the hard way as a kid that I needed verbal permission before stepping foot into this private territory of his. Even grown, my hand still trembled as I turned open the knob and stepped into the room. Father was sitting behind his wooden desk that was backing the only window in the sizable room filled with books on shelves. “Hi, Dad.” I started out by speaking casually. What if he wasn’t upset with me? What if he called me over just to see me? I was taking the chance of the small possibility whereby I wasn’t summoned by him to receive an earful that would result in him making a final decision on my life. “Sit down, Odette.” Father said, his features as stern as I remembered. Ever since the discovery that we weren’t blood related, I started to realize that I didn’t look like anyone in this family at all. My hair was thicker and browner, almost black. And my eyes, I was the only one in the family with light brown eyes. Father had black eyes, Mother had blue eyes. Father’s parents, who never really cared about me, both had black and hazel-colored eyes. I was born with a straight and pointed nose. I even had dimples, contrary to everyone else in the family. My facial structure was round, lacking the sharp angles Father possessed, along with the soft edges Mother had. I looked nothing like them. I was absolutely nothing like them. I swallowed the lump forming in my throat and sat directly across from my father on a wooden chair. Father had been reading a book before I stepped in, so he was wearing his pair of reading glasses. After I sat down, he took them off and placed them on the desk. Then he sighed and propped his elbows seriously. “Explain yourself.” He gave me one chance. “I’m in love with Draven Lockwood.” And I blew it. “Love? Odette, do you know what love is?” Father didn’t even let me answer the question. “Love is not gallivanting around with a strange maniac and ruining your family’s reputation. Love is doing as you’re told and staying put unless needed.” “No, Father. I truly love him. And I can’t live without him.” I spoke with a desperate tone, feeling tears prick my eyes. They didn’t appear because of my so-called love confession. The cause was the expression on my father’s face. “You can’t live without him? Odette, are you insane? Less than a week ago, you were engaged to the Montague kid and happy to tie the knot with him. Now, you expect me to believe that you love this bastard!?” Father shot up from his chair in a fit of anger. “Yes! I do!” I followed suit, rising up and kicking the chair back. “I was pretending. I’ve been pretending all this while that I was happy being with Tristen. And I would've pretended all my life had you not set me free by proclaiming to the world that I’m not your real daughter. “Draven and I have been in love for years—” “Don’t you dare say such blasphemous words.” Father inputted. “I’ll dare! I’ll dare because it’s true! Now that I’m no longer bound to an engagement I never wanted to be in, I can now live my best life with Draven Lockwood.” I declared. Father fumed, walking around his desk to pace his office. He was huffing and puffing like he would explode of anger soon. After a few rounds of pacing, he stopped in front of me and callously said: “You will stay away from that boy, Odette.” “I will not, Father. You don’t get to tell me who I can and can’t be with.” I spoke against the almighty Allister Valmont. “I can and I will! I am your father!” he roared, chest heaving, loud breathing and all. “Are you?” I asked with a small voice. The tears pricking my eyes slowly cascaded. Father’s countenance relaxed. He was finally at a loss for words. “Draven and I are getting married. You can fix Silver’s wedding with Tristen at a later date. Right now, this is the one thing I won’t let you ruin for me because of Silver.” I wiped the tears off my cheeks as I spoke. “I’ll send an invitation to you and Mother. Come if you want.” Father’s nose flared up at my unmasked arrogance. “You will not do such a thing,” he proclaimed. “You will break up with that boy and apologize to me and your mother for daring to humiliate us. And you will apologize to me for raising your voice at me and disrespecting me.” “I will do none of those things.” I countered. “Odette, you—” “Good bye, Father. I’ve listened to what you wanted me to hear and told you what I wanted you to know. My regards to Mother.” I didn’t cower for a moment as I walked past my father and left the study. I heard him call out my name and order for me to return but I didn’t react. I kept on walking till I was out of the mansion and inside my car. I didn’t even give myself the time to process what just happened when I saw a folded paper seated at the top of my steering wheel. I picked it up and opened it. ~I know your secret.•Odette•With the use of my peripheral vision, I watched Draven, finding it difficult to peel my eyes off him. We were seated at the back of one of his cars on the way to meet with his grandfather for dinner.I should be nervous. I should be thinking of how to perfect a loving act with Draven in front of the man. Yet, all I could think about was two nights ago.An incident that I half remembered. I couldn’t remember from the point where Draven had reminded me to pick up my purse in the private lounge. I couldn’t remember how I got home.I damn well couldn’t remember who had taken off my heels and given me a foot massage. Even though I couldn’t remember, I knew that it wouldn’t be anyone other than Draven.Only he would know my address and how to get into my house without my personal assistance. As crazy and criminal as he was. I never thought he would care about me enough to the point where he would rub my feet. I must have been in pain, no doubt about that. Every day in heels from d
•Draven•My right lash line hurt like crazy after getting the lashes there plucked by a drunk Odette Valmont. I exhaled through my mouth, trying to ease the pain.I stared at Odette’s dewy eyes and pouty pink lips after she answered my question. She didn’t even act like she’d done any wrong. My lack of follow-up words made her cock her head to one side, letting her thick brown hair cover the right side of her face.“What lash serum do you use?” she asked, her light brown eyes growing brighter as she fixated on my own eyes; my lashes, probably.“Odette’s personal lash-growing serum.” I answered without thinking.“Really??” She bounced on her toes, excited to be told what she must consider a super top secret.“No. That’s a lie.” I pulled her closer to me and stretched a hand to stop an incoming cab.“How could you?” Odette spoke with a betrayed tone.I didn’t look at her because I had already pictured her face in my head, and just the imaginary visuals could send me spiralling. “Keep
•Odette•It happened in my first year of high school. My parents had been all up in my business at the time, breathing down on my neck. And that should have been around the time I started to do things in the company, creating my personal designs and refining the ideas I found old in Eve.Of course I hadn’t been paying attention to boys and likes. Even though everyone my age was. My parents had it engraved into my head that I was going to get married to Tristen no matter what.Playing around would only get me in trouble and give me hopes that would get crushed in the long run. I believed them, I obeyed them.Which was why I sent away every boy who came my way. “I have a marriage partner already. Please, find someone else to like.”I had said these words almost a thousand times in my youth. Some of the boys I said then to had just been naturally attracted to me. Most had been attracted to my last name. Either way, I couldn’t be with them.Henry Hawk had come into my life in an interes
•Odette•My hands were tense on the steering wheel as I parked my car. It was a different one from the car I’d driven to see my father days ago.I couldn’t ride that one anymore.A lump formed in my throat as the frightening memory refreshed in my head. They knew my secret? A secret that I’d suppressed so deeply in the back of my mind that I could hardly even remember the details? That one?Fuck whoever thought they could threaten me.I grabbed my purse and alighted from the car. I was dressed in a formal blue gown this evening that went off the shoulder. The length ended around my knees and had a long slit at the back. The unreasonably high heels on my feet were killing me as I strutted, probably because I’ve been on them all day, going from place to place to personally inform and invite people to the wedding. All that, just to have Draven ring me to tell me he wanted me to meet up with his closest friends who’d be present at the wedding. I was to act as naturally as possible. I w
•Draven•“Are we really your friends?” Henry whined, aggrieved, before emptying a shot of vodka. He planted the glass on the drinks table and leaned over to rest his head on my shoulder. His big curly brown hair found its way to my mouth. I frowned and shoved him with my elbow.“Don’t touch me.” The warning was filled with irritation. If the kid knew better he’d behave himself. However, he didn’t.He brought his legs up to the leathery cushion, squeezing his lean build as he knelt on the chair. Just so he could grab my left arm tightly and act spoiled. “Rave, I can’t believe you would do this to us. You don’t love us anymore because of her, right? And you never even told us about her!” While prying off Henry’s lean fingers from my arm, his older cousin, who was the last person in the private lounge with us, spoke up.“Stop being annoying, Hen. This is literally the reason why Rave didn’t tell you in particular about Odette.” Adrian said monotonously, wearing his signature straight
