•Odette•

“W-what…?” I paused, unconsciously eager about the things Tristen had to say concerning Draven.

“Yes, Odette. I’ve seen the news, and I couldn’t believe that you, of all people, would have something to do with Draven.” There was a hint of condescension in his tone that rubbed me off the wrong way.

“What is that supposed to mean?” I took offense.

Tristen’s eyes widened when he realized what I was getting to, and he hurriedly let out a stream of apologies. “I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean it that way. It’s not like I believe you would- no, forget it. I’m sorry. I really didn’t mean to offend you.”

“For heaven’s sake, Tristen Montague, say what you sought me out to say and be done with it. I have a thousand better things to do than stand here and listen to you blabber unintelligently.”

My outburst was so sudden and rude that I immediately felt remorseful after the last word. I didn’t make any attempt to apologize cause the words did their work, spiking Tristen to actually speak well.

“I care about you, Odette. That’s why I won’t sit still and let you make a decision that would harm you. I won’t let you be another number on Draven Lockwood’s list.”

“What list?”

“The list of women that he has ‘successfully conquered’. Something like that.”

“Excuse me?” My facial expression scrunched up in confusion and irritation.

“Listen to what I have to say first. Please. You don’t know anything about it. Of course, you don’t, because you’re not the type to put interest in this sort of thing.

“Draven frequently does this thing where he picks a strong and accomplished woman, like a challenge, just to see how long it would take for him to get her to obsess over him. Time and time again, he has been successful.

“The moment he realizes that they no longer put up a fight to challenge him, he gets bored and tosses them away. And if they refuse to take it, he makes them disappear. You know what that means, don’t you, Odette?”

“Tristen, are you insane? Which CEO in the world, who has hundreds of businesses to look after, has the time to start playing manipulative number picking games with women?”

My brain didn’t even process anything Tristen said in a negative way as they all sounded like fiction.

“I knew you wouldn’t believe me, Odette. But it’s the truth. I swear it. He says it all the time to me and the guys when playing around.” Tristen argued.

I raised a brow in disbelief. “‘You and the guys’, ‘when playing around’. Tristen, you and Draven aren’t even friends. You guys don’t run in the same circle. Why would he even tell you about his private life?

“That’s it. I’m done. I’m done letting you waste my time with made-up stories.” I shoved Tristen out of the way so that I could leave the garden.

Unexpectedly, he grabbed my arm and pulled me back, almost slamming me against his chest.

“Are you crazy? Let go of me!” I yelled, struggling to free my arm from his tight grip.

Though Tristen was not a gym person who worked out, he still had a tall build with lean muscles gotten from negligible manual work.

I couldn’t rip my arm free from his grasp, so I stopped trying and resolved to use my mouth.

“Tristen, let me go. I won’t say this again.” I spoke with a composed voice as opposed to my panicked yell moments ago.

“I’ll let you go, I promise. Just listen to me first. Odette, please. End whatever you have with Draven. He’s not the right one for you.” Tristen said with a persuasive tone.

However, my heart was encased in ice and his words did little to move me.

“Then who’s the right one for me? You? The man who kept quiet with a bowed head when our engagement was broken off? The man who has no single strand of courage in his DNA and always does what his sweet mother wants him to do?

“Grow the fuck up, Tristen. And let go of my arm!” I finally ripped my arm free from Tristen, tottering to find balance.

“Odette, it’s not like that…” Tears glistened Tristen’s eyes.

“What is it like then? Are you trying to say you haven’t hooked up with Silver yet just cause your mom told you to?” I questioned aggressively.

“You know I’m only with Silver because it’s my responsibility. You’re the one I—”

“Were you about to say that she’s the one you love?” A high-pitched feminine voice interrupted Tristen’s heartfelt speech.

“No, of course not!” Tristen denied on instinct, quickly backing away from me as though his standing so close would lead to him contracting a disease.

“Silvia, you’re here…” He let out a sharp exhale, a guilty expression setting on his face.

I almost rolled my eyes. He was acting like he had been doing something wrong with me before Silver came in.

“I am,” Silver came between Tristen and I, wrapping her arm around his own.

I stepped backwards to give the two space.

“Dear sister, you shouldn’t be with my fiancé in private. It’s unbecoming. Don’t you know?” Silver spoke with a sweet voice, but she might have well had said, “Back off from my man, bitch.”

Being a very petty person, I took offense to her words and said, “I was on my way to Father, it was your fiancé who blocked my way.”

“Oh, really?” Silver turned to Tristen.

“I- uh, it wasn’t… not really. I just—”

“It’s okay, baby. It was just a question. It didn’t mean anything. I trust both of you. You guys would never do anything to hurt me nor the two families. I know it.” The threat in Silver’s eyes and words were as clear as daylight.

My fists ended up clenching on their own. I gulped on my saliva and said, “Of course. Now, if you’d excuse me, I have to see Father.”

I attempted to leave the garden but Silver moved first, closing the distance between us.

She whispered into my ear, saying, “Watch yourself, Fake.”

I almost flinched at the title. “I know.”

I bumped shoulders with her while walking, then went on my way.

Silver was not as formidable as the one I was going to meet, so I had no fear of her threats.

•Odette•With the use of my peripheral vision, I watched Draven, finding it difficult to peel my eyes off him. We were seated at the back of one of his cars on the way to meet with his grandfather for dinner.I should be nervous. I should be thinking of how to perfect a loving act with Draven in front of the man. Yet, all I could think about was two nights ago.An incident that I half remembered. I couldn’t remember from the point where Draven had reminded me to pick up my purse in the private lounge. I couldn’t remember how I got home.I damn well couldn’t remember who had taken off my heels and given me a foot massage. Even though I couldn’t remember, I knew that it wouldn’t be anyone other than Draven.Only he would know my address and how to get into my house without my personal assistance. As crazy and criminal as he was. I never thought he would care about me enough to the point where he would rub my feet. I must have been in pain, no doubt about that. Every day in heels from d

  • The Fake Heiress’s Ruthless CEO   17: Lash Serum

•Draven•My right lash line hurt like crazy after getting the lashes there plucked by a drunk Odette Valmont. I exhaled through my mouth, trying to ease the pain.I stared at Odette’s dewy eyes and pouty pink lips after she answered my question. She didn’t even act like she’d done any wrong. My lack of follow-up words made her cock her head to one side, letting her thick brown hair cover the right side of her face.“What lash serum do you use?” she asked, her light brown eyes growing brighter as she fixated on my own eyes; my lashes, probably.“Odette’s personal lash-growing serum.” I answered without thinking.“Really??” She bounced on her toes, excited to be told what she must consider a super top secret.“No. That’s a lie.” I pulled her closer to me and stretched a hand to stop an incoming cab.“How could you?” Odette spoke with a betrayed tone.I didn’t look at her because I had already pictured her face in my head, and just the imaginary visuals could send me spiralling. “Keep

  • The Fake Heiress’s Ruthless CEO   16: Goody-two-shoes

•Odette•It happened in my first year of high school. My parents had been all up in my business at the time, breathing down on my neck. And that should have been around the time I started to do things in the company, creating my personal designs and refining the ideas I found old in Eve.Of course I hadn’t been paying attention to boys and likes. Even though everyone my age was. My parents had it engraved into my head that I was going to get married to Tristen no matter what.Playing around would only get me in trouble and give me hopes that would get crushed in the long run. I believed them, I obeyed them.Which was why I sent away every boy who came my way. “I have a marriage partner already. Please, find someone else to like.”I had said these words almost a thousand times in my youth. Some of the boys I said then to had just been naturally attracted to me. Most had been attracted to my last name. Either way, I couldn’t be with them.Henry Hawk had come into my life in an interes

  • The Fake Heiress’s Ruthless CEO   15: All the best things

•Odette•My hands were tense on the steering wheel as I parked my car. It was a different one from the car I’d driven to see my father days ago.I couldn’t ride that one anymore.A lump formed in my throat as the frightening memory refreshed in my head. They knew my secret? A secret that I’d suppressed so deeply in the back of my mind that I could hardly even remember the details? That one?Fuck whoever thought they could threaten me.I grabbed my purse and alighted from the car. I was dressed in a formal blue gown this evening that went off the shoulder. The length ended around my knees and had a long slit at the back. The unreasonably high heels on my feet were killing me as I strutted, probably because I’ve been on them all day, going from place to place to personally inform and invite people to the wedding. All that, just to have Draven ring me to tell me he wanted me to meet up with his closest friends who’d be present at the wedding. I was to act as naturally as possible. I w

•Draven•“Are we really your friends?” Henry whined, aggrieved, before emptying a shot of vodka. He planted the glass on the drinks table and leaned over to rest his head on my shoulder. His big curly brown hair found its way to my mouth. I frowned and shoved him with my elbow.“Don’t touch me.” The warning was filled with irritation. If the kid knew better he’d behave himself. However, he didn’t.He brought his legs up to the leathery cushion, squeezing his lean build as he knelt on the chair. Just so he could grab my left arm tightly and act spoiled. “Rave, I can’t believe you would do this to us. You don’t love us anymore because of her, right? And you never even told us about her!” While prying off Henry’s lean fingers from my arm, his older cousin, who was the last person in the private lounge with us, spoke up.“Stop being annoying, Hen. This is literally the reason why Rave didn’t tell you in particular about Odette.” Adrian said monotonously, wearing his signature straight

  • The Fake Heiress’s Ruthless CEO   13: Are You?

•Odette•After leaving the garden, I calmly walked into the mansion, navigating through the walkways to get to my father’s study while my heart drummed loudly against my chest. As much as I hated Silver, her independent opinion and actions meant nothing to me. The only things that mattered to me were the reactions and opinions of my parents. Before Silver came into our lives, I used to think that I knew them best. That I could predict their movements and decisions. I was wrong.I knocked on the mahogany door of my father’s private study first before announcing my arrival.“Father, it’s me. Odette.” The fear that I thought I could suppress surfaced when I spoke with a weak voice.Ten whole seconds passed—I counted—before Father granted me the permission to step into his study. I learnt the hard way as a kid that I needed verbal permission before stepping foot into this private territory of his.Even grown, my hand still trembled as I turned open the knob and stepped into the room.
