My hands were tense on the steering wheel as I parked my car. It was a different one from the car I’d driven to see my father days ago. I couldn’t ride that one anymore. A lump formed in my throat as the frightening memory refreshed in my head. They knew my secret? A secret that I’d suppressed so deeply in the back of my mind that I could hardly even remember the details? That one? Fuck whoever thought they could threaten me. I grabbed my purse and alighted from the car. I was dressed in a formal blue gown this evening that went off the shoulder. The length ended around my knees and had a long slit at the back. The unreasonably high heels on my feet were killing me as I strutted, probably because I’ve been on them all day, going from place to place to personally inform and invite people to the wedding. All that, just to have Draven ring me to tell me he wanted me to meet up with his closest friends who’d be present at the wedding. I was to act as naturally as possible. I wasn’t completely sure if his friends knew that our relationship was a sham, so I was set on not doing too much. I walked into the lounge like I owned it and navigated my way to the room Draven informed me he would be inside. A step into the room and I was hit with the strong smell of alcohol and testosterone. I blinked a couple of times and cleared my throat to adapt into the setting. Then I planted a polite smile on my face and went deeper. “Odette Valmont, you’re finally here!” Draven was the first to acknowledge me, standing from his seat and walking towards me. He wrapped his arms around my waist and placed a peck on my cheek. My hand was on his chest as I said, “Hi, good evening.” Draven’s breath reeked of expensive champagne, yet that damn mint coffee scent in his body seemed even stronger. “You look ravishing, darling.” Draven made a show of pressing his soft lips to my forehead for more than a couple of seconds before retreating with a ‘muah’ sound. I feigned a giggle at the gesture and patted his chest cheerfully. “Oh, stop it.” “Gag.” An unamused voice floated in the air and made an impact on my fake smile. I finally looked at the other occupants in the lounge. The one who said that word was wearing a vintage shirt and shorts with curly brown hair and light brown eyes. He had this puppyish face that I found oddly familiar. The other guy was on a white button-down with a black suit vest on top and a powerful aura that could make one feel incredibly small under his gaze. This was a man I knew—not personally, but I’ve heard about him. Adrian Hawk, Draven’s absolute best friend and perhaps his complete opposite. “Don’t be jealous, Hen. They’re in their honeymoon stage.” Adrian said with a rather disinterested voice, then stood up to welcome me. “Hello, Miss Valmont. Nice to meet me.” He stretched out his hand for a shake. I slowly disentangled from Draven to take the man’s strong, callused hand. “My pleasure, Mr. Hawk. I’ve heard so many things about you.” I smiled politely. “All good things, I hope?” Adrian indulged, dissolving the handshake. I only smiled in response. I heard he was a very tough nut to crack. Not a man to go against and an upright citizen to the core. My father would love him. “Yes, yes. All the best things and more, Adrian. You’re perfect.” Draven droned with displeasure and pulled me back to him, much closer than before. Like he was staking his claim on me. Though I was confused as to why, I didn’t make a fuss about it. “That one there is Henry. No need to mind him too much.” Draven pointed at the guy still sitting, sipping on his drink. His brown eyes cut to Draven in an offended manner before he rose to his feet to acknowledge me. “Hi…” was all he said, waving shyly at me. He looked like he’d been drained of all his energy in some kind of way. And that face, hold on… “Did you attend Elite High School?” I asked without holding back as a weight settled on my chest. Henry’s mouth fell open, and just a second before he could reply, Draven tightened his arm around my waist and said, “He sure did. Took you a while to remember. It’s your highschool sweetheart.” The amusement in Draven’s tone was so clear and mocking. I knew for sure I wasn’t the one being mocked when I noticed how Henry’s cheeks had tinted bright red. “We were never high school sweethearts. Just friends,” I clarified to Draven with a pinched tone. “Good to see you again.” I said to Henry, reaching for his hand. He awkwardly clasped my hand in his for less than a second. “Yeah, you look good.” “Thank you.” I withdrew all forms of informality with him and stuck to Draven’s side. “Come on, I got you your favorite drink. Sit with me.” Draven shifted the topic and ushered me to settle down on the leathery cushion. The other two men followed suit. It had been awkward at first because of Henry’s odd temperament, but after two or three drinks, everything fell into place. And I finally let go of the guilty feeling that had been gnawing at my chest since I recognized Henry Hawk.•Odette•With the use of my peripheral vision, I watched Draven, finding it difficult to peel my eyes off him. We were seated at the back of one of his cars on the way to meet with his grandfather for dinner.I should be nervous. I should be thinking of how to perfect a loving act with Draven in front of the man. Yet, all I could think about was two nights ago.An incident that I half remembered. I couldn’t remember from the point where Draven had reminded me to pick up my purse in the private lounge. I couldn’t remember how I got home.I damn well couldn’t remember who had taken off my heels and given me a foot massage. Even though I couldn’t remember, I knew that it wouldn’t be anyone other than Draven.Only he would know my address and how to get into my house without my personal assistance. As crazy and criminal as he was. I never thought he would care about me enough to the point where he would rub my feet. I must have been in pain, no doubt about that. Every day in heels from d
•Draven•My right lash line hurt like crazy after getting the lashes there plucked by a drunk Odette Valmont. I exhaled through my mouth, trying to ease the pain.I stared at Odette’s dewy eyes and pouty pink lips after she answered my question. She didn’t even act like she’d done any wrong. My lack of follow-up words made her cock her head to one side, letting her thick brown hair cover the right side of her face.“What lash serum do you use?” she asked, her light brown eyes growing brighter as she fixated on my own eyes; my lashes, probably.“Odette’s personal lash-growing serum.” I answered without thinking.“Really??” She bounced on her toes, excited to be told what she must consider a super top secret.“No. That’s a lie.” I pulled her closer to me and stretched a hand to stop an incoming cab.“How could you?” Odette spoke with a betrayed tone.I didn’t look at her because I had already pictured her face in my head, and just the imaginary visuals could send me spiralling. “Keep
•Odette•It happened in my first year of high school. My parents had been all up in my business at the time, breathing down on my neck. And that should have been around the time I started to do things in the company, creating my personal designs and refining the ideas I found old in Eve.Of course I hadn’t been paying attention to boys and likes. Even though everyone my age was. My parents had it engraved into my head that I was going to get married to Tristen no matter what.Playing around would only get me in trouble and give me hopes that would get crushed in the long run. I believed them, I obeyed them.Which was why I sent away every boy who came my way. “I have a marriage partner already. Please, find someone else to like.”I had said these words almost a thousand times in my youth. Some of the boys I said then to had just been naturally attracted to me. Most had been attracted to my last name. Either way, I couldn’t be with them.Henry Hawk had come into my life in an interes

•Draven•“Are we really your friends?” Henry whined, aggrieved, before emptying a shot of vodka. He planted the glass on the drinks table and leaned over to rest his head on my shoulder. His big curly brown hair found its way to my mouth. I frowned and shoved him with my elbow.“Don’t touch me.” The warning was filled with irritation. If the kid knew better he’d behave himself. However, he didn’t.He brought his legs up to the leathery cushion, squeezing his lean build as he knelt on the chair. Just so he could grab my left arm tightly and act spoiled. “Rave, I can’t believe you would do this to us. You don’t love us anymore because of her, right? And you never even told us about her!” While prying off Henry’s lean fingers from my arm, his older cousin, who was the last person in the private lounge with us, spoke up.“Stop being annoying, Hen. This is literally the reason why Rave didn’t tell you in particular about Odette.” Adrian said monotonously, wearing his signature straight
•Odette•After leaving the garden, I calmly walked into the mansion, navigating through the walkways to get to my father’s study while my heart drummed loudly against my chest. As much as I hated Silver, her independent opinion and actions meant nothing to me. The only things that mattered to me were the reactions and opinions of my parents. Before Silver came into our lives, I used to think that I knew them best. That I could predict their movements and decisions. I was wrong.I knocked on the mahogany door of my father’s private study first before announcing my arrival.“Father, it’s me. Odette.” The fear that I thought I could suppress surfaced when I spoke with a weak voice.Ten whole seconds passed—I counted—before Father granted me the permission to step into his study. I learnt the hard way as a kid that I needed verbal permission before stepping foot into this private territory of his.Even grown, my hand still trembled as I turned open the knob and stepped into the room.
