Chapter 3

Penulis: Heisen Steele
The palace servants came forward and dragged me away, though I could barely stand.

William stormed back to his seat at the head of the table. When his gaze fell on the glaring red mark, he froze for nearly 15 seconds.

But the moment Francesca pouted and threw herself into his arms, all traces of guilt vanished from his face. He immediately called off the banquet and summoned the imperial physician to examine her.

The banquet had been arranged specifically to humiliate me. It had begun with great fanfare, only to end just as abruptly.

The nobles and their wives had been eager to gossip for some time. Soon, the entire hall had emptied.

Only Theo paused for a long moment when he passed the embroidered purse on the ground.

Five years ago, I'd stayed up three nights in a row to embroider it for him. It had been a token of our love.

When he heard Francesca call out to him from a distance, "Theo, come here!" he finally straightened from his slightly bent position. He dusted off his clothes and walked away without looking back.

…

After five years, I'd finally returned to my own estate, only to be reduced to Francesca's lowest-ranking maid.

At her instruction, everyone avoided me as though I were contagious.

Fiona Whitmore, who had once tearfully begged me for two silver coins to save her parents' lives, slapped me across the face and ordered me to handle the most exhausting laundry duties.

Nina Fairchild, who had once served at my side and received countless rewards from me, stepped on my chilblain-covered hands and sneered as she ordered me to remove my only bracelet.

My heart turned cold, but to survive until the day after tomorrow, I obeyed every order.

Yet Francesca still wasn't done with me.

The next day, while I was sweeping the grounds, someone suddenly splashed foul-smelling filth all over me.

I looked up to see Francesca accompanied by several of her personal attendants. She slammed a chamber pot down over my head. "Leah, lick it clean."

Hatred surged through me. I wiped the filth from my face and glared at her. "My brother only ordered me to sweep the estate and reflect on my mistakes. He never said you could humiliate me like this!"

Francesca's eyes widened before she burst into laughter. "Don't tell me you still think you're a princess! Leah, in the eyes of the people, you're the lowest kind of whore in the entire kingdom!

"Those obscene paintings of you have spread everywhere. Everyone knows that you, a princess of the imperial family, serviced over 100 beggars. You're already rotten to the core!"

The emotions I'd suppressed for days finally erupted. I slapped Francesca hard across the face.

In the next instant, the imperial guards behind her rushed forward, twisted my arms behind my back, and forced me to kneel before her.

Francesca raised an eyebrow and smiled. "Look up. Take a good look at the men behind me. Do they look familiar?"

I raised my head in confusion. The moment I recognized the guards, the blood in my veins seemed to freeze.

The scars on their faces and the half-missing ear of one guard were unmistakable. These were the same men whose faces had loomed over me in the darkness five years ago!

Memories of the brutal abuse flashed through my mind. My entire body began to tremble uncontrollably, and my mind went completely blank.

Back then, Francesca had accused me of plotting to have men violate her.

In their fury, William and Theo had personally thrown me out of the city to teach me a lesson.

They had no idea that I'd spent the entire night in a den of beggars, crying and pleading for mercy.

Later, they told me I'd brought it upon myself and that this was the punishment I deserved. They also assured me that the incident would remain an imperial secret and that every man who had assaulted me had been executed.

I had believed them. Foolishly, I had believed them for five whole years.

Yet now, those same men stood right before me as members of the imperial guards!

The guard who gripped my arm licked his lips and flashed me a revolting smile. "I only got one turn five years ago. I've looked forward to seeing the Princess again every day since."

I broke down completely. I wrenched myself free from his grasp and ran wildly toward the palace.

Still covered in filth, I stormed into my brother's chambers and seized William by the collar. "You promised me! You promised you'd kill every last one of them! You gave me your word!"

William stared at me in shock before he suddenly realized what I meant.

"Francesca is kind-hearted. She said they only made that mistake because you seduced them, so she personally intervened to spare their lives," he claimed. "They've behaved themselves for years. Why are you making such a fuss about it?"

In that instant, I lost every ounce of strength I had left and collapsed to the floor.

The sibling bond I'd once treasured had become a complete joke, and my heart had finally turned to ice.

…

I couldn't remember how I'd made my way out of Edelmont. All I remembered was how everyone covered their noses and kept their distance from me.

Great. I supposed they could now add another charge to the countless crimes attributed to me: improper conduct. But I no longer cared.

I had no idea how long I'd been walking when a group of men suddenly blocked my path.

"Lady Francesca ordered us to have some more fun with you. She said we should make sure to fuck you to death right here in the street."

"Be strong this time, Princess Leah. Don't start begging for mercy before an hour has even passed, like you did last time."

My heart tightened. Francesca intended to have me killed.

However, I had to go home. I couldn't die here!

As I struggled, I heard a faint laugh nearby. It was Francesca's voice.

I summoned a strength I'd never known I possessed, broke free of their grip, and clamped both hands around her throat!

"If any of you so much as touches me, I'll kill your master right now!"

Everyone froze in shock.

I used Francesca as a shield and slowly backed away.

I'd barely taken a few steps when something came whistling through the air and struck me hard in the temple.

It was the riding crop Theo held in his hand.

"Tell me! Tell me exactly what happened, every last detail!" William demanded. "If you do, I might at least let you keep your bodies intact when you die!"The servants who had forced me back into the fire just moments earlier were now trembling like leaves in the wind. Under severe torture, they confessed to their crimes one by one."Lady Francesca paid us to burn the disfavored princess alive!""She promised to let us leave the palace once we'd finished the job. We swear we'll never do it again..."William shook uncontrollably. His sword flashed, and the servants fell dead one after another. After slaughtering the servants, he finally turned his blade on Francesca. "Francesca Ashbourne, you claimed you could hear the system speaking to Leah. You even claimed you could find a way to make her stay forever."So what the hell is going on now? Was a single word you said ever true?"Terrified by the icy gleam of the sword's tip, Francesca burst into tears and turned to Theo for help.

Theo burst into tears. "Leah! Leah, wake up! Please, don't scare me!"His vision went black, and he collapsed on the spot. For a moment, the palace was filled with screams, sobs, and frantic shouts for the imperial physicians to save him. It had never been so lively.I merely watched coldly, wondering what excuse Francesca would come up with this time to salvage the wedding she'd spent her entire life dreaming of."Brother, don't panic just yet. The body is completely burned. Who knows if it's even Leah? She has a heart of stone. For all we know, she killed someone else and used the body as a substitute!" she claimed.William shuddered violently before he muttered to himself, "Right, right! Leah wouldn't willingly die. She can't be dead! Someone get the coroner! Examine the body!"An imperial physician immediately stepped forward and began examining the remains.William watched him tensely, as though he feared the man might try to deceive him.But how could he know that Frances

While I was lost in thought, Francesca finally arrived. With a pitiful expression and tears in her eyes, she hurried over to the two men. "Brother, honey, this place is dangerous. Why don't we leave the servants to handle things and go back to finish our wedding first?"The thing I've looked forward to most in my entire life is our wedding today. Perhaps Leah deliberately set the fire and faked her death just to ruin it!"The tension on both men's faces immediately eased. They exchanged a glance and let out a long sigh of relief."That's right. Francesca is right. Leah is full of tricks. She approached us to complete her system missions in the first place. She never had an ounce of genuine affection for us. For all we know, she's hiding somewhere right now, laughing her head off at us for worrying like a pair of fools!""Exactly! Leah has gone too far this time. Just wait until I get my hands on her. I'll make sure she pays for this!"As I listened to them, I let out a bitter la

Francesca's sobs abruptly stopped. Disbelief filled her face. "I... I'm hurt!"She couldn't understand it, and neither could I. Why did everything seem to return to normal the moment I died?William and Theo didn't spare Francesca another glance. They hurried toward the fire. When William saw that the secluded palace had been reduced to ashes, he flew into a rage. "Guards! Where is everyone? Are you all dead? Put out the fire! If anything has happened to Leah, every servant who was supposed to be guarding her will be buried with her!"The palace servants who had just forced me back into the flames went deathly pale. They scrambled to fetch water.Meanwhile, Theo hadn't even taken off his wedding attire before he recklessly charged into the blaze! The attendants from the General's Estate were beside themselves with terror. They grabbed him and held on tightly."General, please think this through! A fire this fierce will kill you!""It's your wedding day! Even if you're worried a

I clung desperately to the burning doorframe, refusing to let go even as my clothes caught fire. When the servants saw that I'd actually managed to crawl out, their expressions darkened."Lady Francesca said you're not allowed to leave this courtyard today.""Princess, forgive us."In an instant, countless wooden poles thrust toward me from every direction, forcing me back into the sea of flames. At the sight of their twisted, vicious expressions, I burst into hysterical laughter. My laughter sent chills down their spines. They had no idea what had gotten into me.But how could they know? I wasn't trying to beg for help. I wanted the celestial phenomenon known as the White Rainbow Crossing the Sun to send me home!Having completely lost the will to survive, I fell backward into the sea of flames. At that very moment, a brilliant light flashed across the sky, and my soul slowly rose into the air.I watched as the flames consumed my body, reducing it to a charred corpse.I cou

The blow left me so dizzy that I couldn't get back up for a long time."No, that's not it. She was the one who ordered those men to violate me back then—"Before I could finish, another slap struck me across the face.William's expression darkened. He looked down at me with cold indifference and said, "When I saw you rushing around with your clothes in such disarray, I thought something had happened to you. That's why I followed you."Leah, you've disappointed me beyond words!"Guards! Strip her down to her undergarments and hang her outside the palace gates for public display. Charge one penny per visit. Let the commoners come and gawk at her!""No—"Before I could finish pleading, someone clamped a hand over my mouth and dragged me away. The guards stripped me down to my undergarments and hung me beneath the city walls, exposed to the howling wind and driving snow.As word spread, countless commoners flocked to see me. One mocking remark after another rang through the air.
