Chapter 2

Author: Heisen Steele
The noblewomen gathered around us were practically buzzing with excitement.

Everyone in the capital knew how hopelessly infatuated I was with Theo.

I'd taken a sword for him on the battlefield, tested poison for him in the southern territories, and bled myself dry on a snowy mountain to keep him alive. I'd even brought him back from the brink of death with my own two hands.

Everyone was waiting for me to lose control and make a scene, eager to cement my reputation as a "madwoman" and a "slut."

What they didn't know was that five years ago, the moment Theo had personally thrown me into a den of beggars just to win Francesca's favor, my obsession with him had died along with my dignity.

I smiled faintly. "Then congratulations. May you two lovebirds live happily ever after. I'm nothing but a withered flower, unworthy of a young general like you. So I'll take my leave."

The mocking amusement vanished from Theo's face as he watched me leave, lost in thought.

William was the first to snap. "Leah, stop right there! Do you think I can't see through your malicious schemes just because you're putting on this act?

"You're just trying to make people gossip that I favor Francesca and drove the real princess away at the Imperial Winter Festival. Well, I won't let you have your way! Get back here and serve Francesca some wine!"

His face was livid, but for some reason, his voice trembled slightly toward the end.

In the past, I would've caught every flicker of emotion in his voice. I'd have stayed by his side when he was discouraged and comforted him whenever he was upset.

But now, his anger stirred nothing in me. I couldn't even be bothered to guess what had set him off.

I simply turned around as ordered and took the maid's place in full view of everyone.

Francesca looked thoroughly pleased with herself as she ordered me to serve her wine and fetch whatever else she wanted.

I obeyed without complaint, never once feeling sorry for myself.

During my five years at St. Faith's Abbey, surrounded by little more than prayer candles and ancient scriptures, I'd searched through countless forgotten texts. Not long ago, I'd finally found The Oracle's Atlas.

Before the system severed its connection to me, it had left me one final instruction.

[If you ever regret your decision and want to return home, you can go back to Edelmont on the day the white rainbow crosses the sun.]

According to the chart, the rare celestial phenomenon, which occurred only once every 100 years, would appear in two days.

I only had to endure another 48 hours, and I'd finally be free.

Perhaps noticing how distracted I was, William scoffed and ordered his attendants to bring out this year's birthday gifts for the princess.

One by one, chests filled with pearls, silver, and gold were opened before me.

Theo wasn't about to be outdone, either. He gently draped a white tiger fur cloak he'd acquired from the northern frontier over Francesca's shoulders.

Strangely, despite both men openly showering Francesca with affection, their eyes kept drifting toward me as though they were waiting for something.

When I showed no reaction, they both looked faintly disappointed, an unusual expression for either of them.

I honestly had no idea what was going through their minds.

When Francesca falsely accused me of drugging her, they were the ones who'd personally broken my legs and handed me over to a cruel old servant, who assaulted me throughout the night.

To appease Francesca, William, my half-brother, had even schemed to make our beloved father and mother walk in on the scene.

My mother had died of shock on the spot, while my father fell gravely ill. Before long, he too passed away, consumed by grief.

After William ascended the throne, rumors of my supposed promiscuity spread throughout the capital.

They'd do absolutely anything to make Francesca happy, so why were they putting on this ridiculous display in front of me now?

I couldn't understand it, and I couldn't be bothered to try.

Francesca seemed to notice something was amiss, too. She made an excuse to leave and freshen up.

She'd barely left when I heard a horse whinny behind me. A split second later, a powerful kick sent me flying through the air, and I crashed heavily to the ground.

I struggled to lift my head and recognized the little chestnut mare I'd brought back from the northern frontier and raised with my own hands.

Yet now, the very horse that had once obeyed no one but me allowed Francesca to sit on its back. It reared up and brought its front hooves crashing down on me!

I instinctively raised my arms to shield myself.

But both arms had been broken countless times during the abuse I'd endured at the abbey. After standing for so long that day, I was too weak to muster even the slightest bit of strength.

The little mare brought one hoof down on my ribs with enough force to crush them and make me spit blood.

William and Theo scrambled to their feet and rushed toward me in alarm.

At the same time, Francesca burst into tears from atop the horse. "The horse spooked! I can't control it!"

Both men immediately changed direction. One drew his sword and plunged it into the little mare's neck, while the other pulled Francesca tightly into his arms.

"Let us see if you're hurt!"

As if anything could've happened to Francesca. She'd simply wanted me to see that even the little horse I'd raised with my own hands had become her plaything.

The pain was so intense that I couldn't help curling into a ball.

When Francesca saw me lying there in such a wretched state, a faint smile touched her lips. "This is the horse my sister raised. I suppose it got a little too excited when it saw her. I don't blame it."

In the next instant, William strode over and kicked me hard in the leg. "You've trained in martial arts since you were young, yet you nearly got Francesca hurt! And now you're putting on this pathetic, helpless act to win everyone's sympathy?

"I was wrong about you. I thought you'd finally changed for the better, but it turns out you've only become more calculating!

"If you love pretending to be weak so much, then get out of here and go work as a lowly servant at the princess' estate! You can come back and see me when you've finally learned your lesson!"

"Tell me! Tell me exactly what happened, every last detail!" William demanded. "If you do, I might at least let you keep your bodies intact when you die!"The servants who had forced me back into the fire just moments earlier were now trembling like leaves in the wind. Under severe torture, they confessed to their crimes one by one."Lady Francesca paid us to burn the disfavored princess alive!""She promised to let us leave the palace once we'd finished the job. We swear we'll never do it again..."William shook uncontrollably. His sword flashed, and the servants fell dead one after another. After slaughtering the servants, he finally turned his blade on Francesca. "Francesca Ashbourne, you claimed you could hear the system speaking to Leah. You even claimed you could find a way to make her stay forever."So what the hell is going on now? Was a single word you said ever true?"Terrified by the icy gleam of the sword's tip, Francesca burst into tears and turned to Theo for help.

Theo burst into tears. "Leah! Leah, wake up! Please, don't scare me!"His vision went black, and he collapsed on the spot. For a moment, the palace was filled with screams, sobs, and frantic shouts for the imperial physicians to save him. It had never been so lively.I merely watched coldly, wondering what excuse Francesca would come up with this time to salvage the wedding she'd spent her entire life dreaming of."Brother, don't panic just yet. The body is completely burned. Who knows if it's even Leah? She has a heart of stone. For all we know, she killed someone else and used the body as a substitute!" she claimed.William shuddered violently before he muttered to himself, "Right, right! Leah wouldn't willingly die. She can't be dead! Someone get the coroner! Examine the body!"An imperial physician immediately stepped forward and began examining the remains.William watched him tensely, as though he feared the man might try to deceive him.But how could he know that Frances

While I was lost in thought, Francesca finally arrived. With a pitiful expression and tears in her eyes, she hurried over to the two men. "Brother, honey, this place is dangerous. Why don't we leave the servants to handle things and go back to finish our wedding first?"The thing I've looked forward to most in my entire life is our wedding today. Perhaps Leah deliberately set the fire and faked her death just to ruin it!"The tension on both men's faces immediately eased. They exchanged a glance and let out a long sigh of relief."That's right. Francesca is right. Leah is full of tricks. She approached us to complete her system missions in the first place. She never had an ounce of genuine affection for us. For all we know, she's hiding somewhere right now, laughing her head off at us for worrying like a pair of fools!""Exactly! Leah has gone too far this time. Just wait until I get my hands on her. I'll make sure she pays for this!"As I listened to them, I let out a bitter la

Francesca's sobs abruptly stopped. Disbelief filled her face. "I... I'm hurt!"She couldn't understand it, and neither could I. Why did everything seem to return to normal the moment I died?William and Theo didn't spare Francesca another glance. They hurried toward the fire. When William saw that the secluded palace had been reduced to ashes, he flew into a rage. "Guards! Where is everyone? Are you all dead? Put out the fire! If anything has happened to Leah, every servant who was supposed to be guarding her will be buried with her!"The palace servants who had just forced me back into the flames went deathly pale. They scrambled to fetch water.Meanwhile, Theo hadn't even taken off his wedding attire before he recklessly charged into the blaze! The attendants from the General's Estate were beside themselves with terror. They grabbed him and held on tightly."General, please think this through! A fire this fierce will kill you!""It's your wedding day! Even if you're worried a

I clung desperately to the burning doorframe, refusing to let go even as my clothes caught fire. When the servants saw that I'd actually managed to crawl out, their expressions darkened."Lady Francesca said you're not allowed to leave this courtyard today.""Princess, forgive us."In an instant, countless wooden poles thrust toward me from every direction, forcing me back into the sea of flames. At the sight of their twisted, vicious expressions, I burst into hysterical laughter. My laughter sent chills down their spines. They had no idea what had gotten into me.But how could they know? I wasn't trying to beg for help. I wanted the celestial phenomenon known as the White Rainbow Crossing the Sun to send me home!Having completely lost the will to survive, I fell backward into the sea of flames. At that very moment, a brilliant light flashed across the sky, and my soul slowly rose into the air.I watched as the flames consumed my body, reducing it to a charred corpse.I cou

The blow left me so dizzy that I couldn't get back up for a long time."No, that's not it. She was the one who ordered those men to violate me back then—"Before I could finish, another slap struck me across the face.William's expression darkened. He looked down at me with cold indifference and said, "When I saw you rushing around with your clothes in such disarray, I thought something had happened to you. That's why I followed you."Leah, you've disappointed me beyond words!"Guards! Strip her down to her undergarments and hang her outside the palace gates for public display. Charge one penny per visit. Let the commoners come and gawk at her!""No—"Before I could finish pleading, someone clamped a hand over my mouth and dragged me away. The guards stripped me down to my undergarments and hung me beneath the city walls, exposed to the howling wind and driving snow.As word spread, countless commoners flocked to see me. One mocking remark after another rang through the air.
