Chapter 4

Penulis: Heisen Steele
The blow left me so dizzy that I couldn't get back up for a long time.

"No, that's not it. She was the one who ordered those men to violate me back then—"

Before I could finish, another slap struck me across the face.

William's expression darkened. He looked down at me with cold indifference and said, "When I saw you rushing around with your clothes in such disarray, I thought something had happened to you. That's why I followed you.

"Leah, you've disappointed me beyond words!

"Guards! Strip her down to her undergarments and hang her outside the palace gates for public display. Charge one penny per visit. Let the commoners come and gawk at her!"

"No—"

Before I could finish pleading, someone clamped a hand over my mouth and dragged me away.

The guards stripped me down to my undergarments and hung me beneath the city walls, exposed to the howling wind and driving snow.

As word spread, countless commoners flocked to see me. One mocking remark after another rang through the air.

I listened numbly and prayed only that tomorrow would come soon.

…

At nightfall, Francesca arrived in a thick fox-fur cloak.

She gazed at me with a cheerful smile, her voice full of triumph. "Who would've thought that even your filthy body could still be such a gold mine?

"The admission fees alone have brought in 100 ounces of gold. Your brother said I could keep it all as part of my dowry. I should thank you for that, shouldn't I, dear sister?"

I watched her lips move and wanted to say something.

But perhaps the weather was simply too cold, or perhaps my broken body had finally reached its limit. My vision went black, and I lost consciousness.

Just before I passed out, I thought I heard William's voice.

"Leah, I forbid you to die!"

…

When I opened my eyes again, I was lying in a bed in a side chamber of the palace.

When William saw that I was awake, he sneered, "You certainly have a strong will to live. Francesca and Theo are getting married tomorrow, yet you just had to attempt suicide now. Are you deliberately trying to bring bad luck to her wedding?"

My heart sank. So that cry hadn't been for my sake after all. He had never been afraid of losing me. He was only afraid that my death would ruin his precious Francesca's wedding.

I let out a bitter laugh and silently turned my back on him.

At my reaction, William suddenly hurled the cup in his hand to the floor. "What kind of attitude is that? Since you're so unwilling to see Francesca marry Theo, I'll punish you by making you carry her wedding sedan chair yourself tomorrow. You'll personally deliver her to the General's Estate!"

…

The next day, I was roughly dragged out of bed, dressed, and shoved in front of Francesca's wedding sedan chair.

To display the majesty of the imperial family, William had commissioned an entirely new sedan chair for her, crafted from the finest ironwood.

I might once have been strong enough to carry it, but in my current, ruined state, the task was utterly beyond me.

Several of the bearers gave me sympathetic looks. "Don't worry. We'll bear most of the weight. You just need to walk in front."

I never imagined that the last people in this world to show me kindness would be complete strangers. Their words warmed my heart, and I resigned myself to helping carry the sedan chair.

Unexpectedly, the moment I took a step, all seven men behind me let go at once.

The sedan chair, which weighed hundreds of pounds, came crashing down on me. I staggered under its weight.

Caught completely off guard, I collapsed beneath it and spat out a mouthful of blood!

Theo, who had been waiting on horseback at the front of the procession, rode past me. With no regard for etiquette, he lifted the sedan curtain and anxiously checked on Francesca.

William's face darkened with rage.

"I underestimated you. You were hoping the sedan chair would overturn and crush Francesca to death, weren't you?

"I only wanted to give you a chance to redeem yourself. But now, it seems you need to be sent to the secluded palace to reflect on your actions!" His voice was icy.

The impact had severely damaged my internal organs. I no longer had even the strength to speak, so I simply let the palace servants drag me away like a dead dog.

As Francesca's wedding procession passed through the streets, joyous music echoed throughout the city. Even the palace was filled with celebration.

Meanwhile, outside the secluded palace, several servants spoke in sinister voices. "Princess, don't blame us. You shouldn't have crossed Lady Francesca. When you meet the Grim Reaper, make sure you don't give him the wrong names!"

The moment they finished speaking, towering flames began to lick through the cracks in the door. Thick smoke filled the room and made me cough violently.

Just as I sank into utter despair, I suddenly heard someone outside cry out in astonishment, "Look at the sky! A white rainbow crossing the sun! It's an auspicious omen!"

That brilliant band of white light across the sun was the path home I'd waited five whole years to see.

  • The Fake Princess, Their Biggest Regret   Chapter 9

"Tell me! Tell me exactly what happened, every last detail!" William demanded. "If you do, I might at least let you keep your bodies intact when you die!"The servants who had forced me back into the fire just moments earlier were now trembling like leaves in the wind. Under severe torture, they confessed to their crimes one by one."Lady Francesca paid us to burn the disfavored princess alive!""She promised to let us leave the palace once we'd finished the job. We swear we'll never do it again..."William shook uncontrollably. His sword flashed, and the servants fell dead one after another. After slaughtering the servants, he finally turned his blade on Francesca. "Francesca Ashbourne, you claimed you could hear the system speaking to Leah. You even claimed you could find a way to make her stay forever."So what the hell is going on now? Was a single word you said ever true?"Terrified by the icy gleam of the sword's tip, Francesca burst into tears and turned to Theo for help.

Theo burst into tears. "Leah! Leah, wake up! Please, don't scare me!"His vision went black, and he collapsed on the spot. For a moment, the palace was filled with screams, sobs, and frantic shouts for the imperial physicians to save him. It had never been so lively.I merely watched coldly, wondering what excuse Francesca would come up with this time to salvage the wedding she'd spent her entire life dreaming of."Brother, don't panic just yet. The body is completely burned. Who knows if it's even Leah? She has a heart of stone. For all we know, she killed someone else and used the body as a substitute!" she claimed.William shuddered violently before he muttered to himself, "Right, right! Leah wouldn't willingly die. She can't be dead! Someone get the coroner! Examine the body!"An imperial physician immediately stepped forward and began examining the remains.William watched him tensely, as though he feared the man might try to deceive him.But how could he know that Frances

While I was lost in thought, Francesca finally arrived. With a pitiful expression and tears in her eyes, she hurried over to the two men. "Brother, honey, this place is dangerous. Why don't we leave the servants to handle things and go back to finish our wedding first?"The thing I've looked forward to most in my entire life is our wedding today. Perhaps Leah deliberately set the fire and faked her death just to ruin it!"The tension on both men's faces immediately eased. They exchanged a glance and let out a long sigh of relief."That's right. Francesca is right. Leah is full of tricks. She approached us to complete her system missions in the first place. She never had an ounce of genuine affection for us. For all we know, she's hiding somewhere right now, laughing her head off at us for worrying like a pair of fools!""Exactly! Leah has gone too far this time. Just wait until I get my hands on her. I'll make sure she pays for this!"As I listened to them, I let out a bitter la

Francesca's sobs abruptly stopped. Disbelief filled her face. "I... I'm hurt!"She couldn't understand it, and neither could I. Why did everything seem to return to normal the moment I died?William and Theo didn't spare Francesca another glance. They hurried toward the fire. When William saw that the secluded palace had been reduced to ashes, he flew into a rage. "Guards! Where is everyone? Are you all dead? Put out the fire! If anything has happened to Leah, every servant who was supposed to be guarding her will be buried with her!"The palace servants who had just forced me back into the flames went deathly pale. They scrambled to fetch water.Meanwhile, Theo hadn't even taken off his wedding attire before he recklessly charged into the blaze! The attendants from the General's Estate were beside themselves with terror. They grabbed him and held on tightly."General, please think this through! A fire this fierce will kill you!""It's your wedding day! Even if you're worried a

I clung desperately to the burning doorframe, refusing to let go even as my clothes caught fire. When the servants saw that I'd actually managed to crawl out, their expressions darkened."Lady Francesca said you're not allowed to leave this courtyard today.""Princess, forgive us."In an instant, countless wooden poles thrust toward me from every direction, forcing me back into the sea of flames. At the sight of their twisted, vicious expressions, I burst into hysterical laughter. My laughter sent chills down their spines. They had no idea what had gotten into me.But how could they know? I wasn't trying to beg for help. I wanted the celestial phenomenon known as the White Rainbow Crossing the Sun to send me home!Having completely lost the will to survive, I fell backward into the sea of flames. At that very moment, a brilliant light flashed across the sky, and my soul slowly rose into the air.I watched as the flames consumed my body, reducing it to a charred corpse.I cou
