Chapter 1

The day the Twelve came after Grantcorp, I was shopping for new handbags at the luxury mall.

Lily, the retail assistant, was holding up the only crocodile-skin handbag of this season before me with her white gloves.

I didn't bother asking about the price and held out the black card I got from Carl Grant.

However, as Lily swiped it, a shrill beep rang.

Rejected.

Lily's smile stiffened for a second, but she soon composed herself and explained, "It could be an issue with the system, Ms. Jones."

However, I was seeing 'insufficient credit' on the screen for the first time.

I had been swiping this card for three years, buying yachts, jewelry and a seaside villa I don't even remember the address of. It never failed me once.

So, I whipped out my phone to call Carl.

No one answered.

In the past, whether he was in the middle of a board meeting or in his private jet, calls from me would just ring for three beeps before he picked up.

I was going to call him again when a rowdy rush of footsteps could be heard outside.

A large group of journalists rushed outside a Grantcorp outlet to take pictures as the signboard was being replaced. The gigantic electronic screen showed that Grantcorp shares were taking a nosedive, with their net worth dropping by the billions in just thirty minutes.

Each ensuing headline was more shocking than the next.

[Ben Grant, board chair of Grantcorp, officially resigns amidst allegations of accounting fraud.]

[Grant's sons remanded for alleged transnational economic manipulation.]

[The Twelve, aptly named partnership of twelve transnational hedge funds, announces joint effort in hostile takeover of Grantcorp.]

I eyed Lily as she started to sneak the handbag away from me. She promptly hung her head, afraid to look me in the eye.

Just minutes ago, she was fawning over me, asking if I'd like to check out the haute couture jewelry section. As soon as there was a hint of crises in the Grant family, she already presumed that I can't afford anything.

People can be really cold these days.

-

Returning home empty-handed, I found the place a complete mess.

Carl's lawyer Max and the rest of Grantcorp's were naturally present, but so were the executives and bean counters. Everyone had their phones out, their concerns vocal and anxious.

Ben sat at the armchair in the center, looking like he just aged a decade.

His wife Molly Chandler was teary-eyed, asking repeatedly about her sons.

Clearly needing a place to vent, Quinn Grant exploded at once when she saw me.

"The family is going bankrupt! Where have you been?"

Her face paled with rage when she saw the bags I was holding.

"Do you even have a heart?"

"Yeah, and it's broken," I sighed. "Saw a bag I like, but the card was rejected."

Quinn was on the verge of tears. "How did Carl end up with a heartless broad like you?"

"Quinn."

A husky voice rang from behind the door just before Carl himself entered. His suit was slung over his hand, his white shirt was very wrinkled, and his eyes were bloodshot.

It must have been a while since he had a good night's sleep.

However, when he saw me, he still stopped to give me a once-over.

Then, he said, "Don't listen to their nonsense."

I nodded and purred, "You're the best, dear."

Quinn rolled her eyes and stormed off, while Carl quietly took out a new debit card and put it in my palm. "This one is still usable."

"How much?"

"Five mil."

I frowned. The cards he gave before were always eight figures at minimum.

Carl could see my disapproval.

Staying silent for a beat, he patted my head and said, "Just make do for the time being."

-

No one was at dinner in the evening. I sat alone, finishing all six dishes the chef cooked.

Even at 2 a.m., the lights in the study upstairs were still lit.

I went over, intending to ask Carl when the old black card could be restored.

I had just reached the door when I heard Max, his lawyer, saying quietly, "Look, the Twelve has seized all our foreign accounts. If we don't have any dough before the stock market opens tomorrow, we're finished."

The study turned silent for a long while, until Carl finally spoke, "Liquidate all my personal assets. And where's that plane ticket?"

Max did a double take. "You're running?"

"No. It's not for me."

That was when the doors suddenly opened, with Carl pausing for a moment when he saw me.

He briskly slid my passport and the plane ticket into my palm.

"Pack your things. I'm sending you abroad first thing tomorrow morning."

I put down the necklace I was holding as I watched Zac. "That night at the Zenith Club, Carl offered all his shares in exchange for the Grants' immunity. But did you take the offer?"As Zac stiffened, I continued, "When he was willing to sign, you told him it's too late. You kept squeezing him for every bit he's worth, not because you want what he has, but you're simply certain of your triumph and wanted to see him despair."Zac's shoulders were slumped.Right then, screeching tires could be heard outside.Soon, the officers were entering the living room, and he sprang to his feet, shouting, "Vera Jones! I gave you everything I had! Why won't you stop?!"I simply reclined against the couch. "Because none of it belongs to you in the first place."Soon, the officers had reached him. "Please come with us to assist with our ongoing investigation, Mr. Stark."The day after Zac's arrest, every charge filed against the Grants were rescinded. Simon and Tim's reputation was restored as

Quinn strode up, smirking. "You keep saying that Vera is a trophy wife, but you and the Twelve spent billions, and still can't even touch her. One call, and all your shares, backers, even your accounts are gone. Who's the loser here?"Zac's breath turned labored and he bellowed, "Shut up!""Oh, did I touch a nerve?" Quinn giggled, gleeful that she could dish back the grief she was given for days. "What, weren't you the majority shareholder? Then why would you need Vera's approval to leave?"Zac swiped at the documents on the table right then, knocking everything to the floor. The officers outside promptly strode in.He tried to fight back, but suddenly realized that no one was willing to help him. Even the lawyers, shareholders, and hedge fund managers were all keeping their heads down.He stood alone in the middle of the carnage, with no help in sight. As for me, I clapped Quinn's shoulder nonchalantly and said, "Nice."She puffed her chest proudly. "I can do this all da

The Grantcorp board meeting started early next morning, though Zac was punctual. He dressed impeccably with his tailored suit. Lawyers and shareholders loyal to him followed him into the board meeting room… Even though his accounts were frozen. He was acting as if he would still win it all just because he was here.As soon as the meeting started, he slammed the shareholder certificate on the table. "I personally have a 15% stake in Grantcorp, plus the shareholders who agreed to my motion. That's 24%."He looked at the Grants and said, "I am hereby calling for a vote of no confidence against Carl Grant, whose tenure had seen Grantcorp lose billions. That is not a man we want leading us."As several board members raised their hands, Simon growled coldly, "You and the Twelve were responsible for those losses."Zac's lips curled sardonically. "But it's still a fact that the losses occurred under his leadership. And in business, we should only look at results, not the cause."Ben's

The skies were dark when Zac arrived at the airstrip. His assistant Morris carried his two bulky suitcases behind him, containing cash, jewelry, and multiple passports of different identities.Along the way, he kept making calls, but no one answered; not even those who fawned over him fanatically over the years. The Trade Federation also dismissed Victor, while the Twelve were busy trying to maintain their innocence.Even the moles he embedded in Grantcorp were unreachable."No, I still have a shot as long as I get out of here," Zac growled as he boarded his plane. "Not even Vera's influence would reach private airstrips. I just have to wait until her emergency powers expire, and the Grants will pay!"He strode down the dark cabin, but barely walked that far when he paused.I was sitting by a window, flipping through the travel brochure, with Carl right beside me.Quinn was there too, insisting on following. She glared at Zac with crossed arms.I shut the brochure. "Mutembo is

After the hearing, the front doors of Grantcorp headquarters were congested with press members.Yesterday, they were all demanding when the Grants would formally file for bankruptcy. Now, they were asking Carl if Grantcorp had new investment plans, what with various banks restoring their capital flow without being asked and partners who voided contracts were making new offers.Even their creditors, who had been demanding repayment, suddenly started apologizing to Grantcorp.Looking around at all the offers and new contracts, Tim sighed. "These people sure change fast, huh?"Quinn snorted. "They called Vera a problem yesterday, and now she's 'Ma'am' to them."I was in Carl's office too, unpacking the new limited edition goodies bag while Carl dealt with the stacks of documents. When he looked up, he asked, "Do you like it?""It's alright.""Anything else you want?"I promptly gave him a list of brands and styles.Simon stood at the door, shaking his head in disbelief. In just an hour, the news reached trending in business sections.[AGFO managing director abuses authority.][Grantcorp hostile takeover, staged?][Vera Jones and Carl Grant's dark secret!]The headlines were certainly painting a vivid picture of a baseless accusation, especially since they posted my never-ending list of extravagant purchases over the last three years while claiming that Grantcorp was bribing me.Quinn flung her tablet on the couch when she was done reading. "Are they crazy? How is it their business Carl is buying stuff for his wife?"Simon, however, was frowning. "The truth doesn't even matter. What matters is that people are demanding a hearing. If we simply let the rumors fester, people would really think that Vera had a personal agenda when she froze the hedge funds' accounts."Ben growled, "Zac's trying to muddy the water. As long as the public doubts the previous inquiry, he has a shot of turning this situation around."As for me, I was still scrolling thr
