Ella walked to her room trembling. When she closed the door behind her, she lost the strength in her knees and sank to the floor. It had felt good to tell Blake off and let out the tension and anger that had piled up in her heart. She had endured humiliation, degradation, and all sorts of subtle abuses in the last three months. She had never slept hungry or wanted for anything, but the last few days of freedom had made it clear that there was so much more to life. But then she wondered about what she had just done. Ella had told Blake that she wanted to leave and that she would forfeit everything. So how was she going to survive? She had no job and her monthly allowance would at most secure her a rental unit. ‘What I’m I thinking? Is this the same allowance that I told Blake to recover?’ Ella said to herself as she tapped herself on the forehead.
