Chapter 2

Author: Waverly June
He never got to finish.

I tipped my wrist, dumping the scalding lobster bisque and everything in it straight over his head.

"Ah!" Blake screamed. His expensive clothes were instantly soaked and stained, chunks of lobster and other ingredients clinging to his hair. He looked utterly pathetic.

The entire cafeteria went dead silent.

Everyone stared at us, stunned by what had just happened.

I slammed the empty container down over Blake's head. My cold voice carried clearly through the silence.

"You stay at my house for a few days, and suddenly you really think you're some rich kid?" I stepped closer and looked down at him. "Your family's housekeeper? Your mom is a housekeeper. You really think her salary is enough to hire one of her own?"

"You've lost your mind! Finn, you ungrateful little scum!" Fanny's shriek broke the silence. She lunged at me, furious, reaching out to shove me.

I simply watched her approach and sidestepped.

She missed me. The momentum sent her stumbling several steps before she landed hard on the floor, getting her clothes smeared with the soup dripping off her son.

"Finn, how could you do this to Blake? He's like a brother to you!" Sitting on the floor, Fanny pointed at me with a trembling finger. "I go through all this trouble to bring you boys lunch, and this is how you repay me?"

"Brother?" I let out a cold laugh, my gaze sweeping over the phony concern written across her face.

"Mrs. Livingston, I think you've forgotten who you work for. You're my family's housekeeper. My family pays your salary. Your son lives in my family's house. So why exactly is he eating better than I am?" I didn't raise my voice, but every word carried through the cafeteria.

"I... I..." Fanny faltered, momentarily speechless.

She'd never seen me like this before. I'd always been quiet and withdrawn, the type to put up with whatever was thrown at me. To her, I'd been nothing more than an antisocial rich kid who was easy to push around.

What had ever given her the right to scream at me like this?

I crouched beside her and leaned toward her ear, lowering my voice until only the three of us could hear.

"Don't forget, every dollar your son spends on food, clothes, and everything else comes from my family." I paused.

"When a dog gets fed, it should wag its tail. It doesn't turn around and bite the hand that feeds it."

Fanny's face instantly drained of color. For the first time, genuine fear appeared in her eyes.

A few classmates helped Blake to his feet. He wiped the soup from his face, his entire body trembling with rage.

"Just you wait, Finn!" he snarled through clenched teeth.

I couldn't even be bothered to look at him again. I turned and calmly walked out under the astonished stares of the entire cafeteria.

Word of the incident spread through the school almost immediately.

There were several versions of the story, but every one of them painted me as the same thing: a jealous, ungrateful jerk who'd turned on someone who treated him like a brother.

Blake, meanwhile, became the perfect victim—generous, forgiving, and somehow gracious even after being humiliated.

To save face and cement his claim that he was the heir to my family's fortune, Blake made a big announcement in front of our entire class when school let out on Friday.

"My family's having a pool party tomorrow night. You're all invited!"

He swept his gaze around the room, deliberately skipping over me as he enthusiastically invited everyone else.

The class immediately erupted in cheers.

"Finally! I've been dying to see Blake's mansion!"

"I heard his pool is bigger than the one here at school!"

As everyone showered him with admiration, Blake finally looked at me, a mixture of provocation and condescension in his eyes.

The entire sequence was seamless and lightning fast.Blake tried to struggle, but Patrick drove a knee into his lower back. Blake immediately went limp, collapsing like a rag doll with nothing left but pained groans.Almost simultaneously, the hospital room door burst open. A group of police officers rushed in, the lead officer holding up his badge."We received a report of a premeditated attempted murder and kidnapping."The officers quickly surveyed the room and took control of everyone involved. The moment Fanny and Miles saw the police, they completely fell apart, collapsing to the floor. Two officers restrained Dad. He didn't resist. He simply stood there in a daze, muttering to himself, "It's over... It's all over..."Everything had gone exactly as I'd planned. From the moment I'd asked Patrick to intercept Miles, the outcome had already been decided.I watched without a flicker of emotion as the police hauled them away. Then one of the monitors beside Grandpa's bed made

Mom didn't bother responding to him again. She walked straight over to me and looked me over carefully. Only after confirming that I was unharmed did a trace of warmth enter her eyes."Finn, you've really grown up."Then her gaze swept over the documents on Grandpa's bed before landing on Fanny and Blake, who were on the floor trembling uncontrollably."You two have some nerve. Do you have a death wish?"In the face of absolute power, all their schemes and calculations fell apart like the pathetic joke they were. The agreement Dad had signed was now nothing more than a worthless piece of paper, a silent testament to his stupidity and greed."It's over... It's all over..." Blake muttered, his eyes vacant.Every dream he'd had, every ounce of pride he'd built his life around, shattered in an instant. He'd fallen from the very top, and there was nothing left to catch him."Oh, right." As though I'd only just remembered something, I woke my phone screen again and opened another fi

"These are the Stanton Group share transfer agreements, along with the inheritance documents for all the family's real estate."Dad picked up one of the documents and handed it to Blake, a manic gleam in his eyes. "Blake, sign it! Starting today, you'll be the true head of the Stanton family!"Blake's hands trembled with excitement. He'd dreamed of this day for years.I leaned against the doorway, watching the ugly spectacle with cold detachment."You're awfully sure his signature will actually mean anything," I said calmly.Dad turned and looked at me as though I were already dead. "Vivian is dead, and the old man doesn't have much longer. Everything the Stanton family owns will belong to my biological son.""Oh? Is that so?"My phone vibrated.Patrick had sent me a file.I opened it.It was a DNA paternity test.I turned the screen toward them and spoke unhurriedly, "There's something here I think you'll find interesting.""Blake Livingston..." I looked at him, enunciatin

I ended the call and handed the phone back to the man in the hospital gown."Thank you," I said hoarsely. Then I quickly composed myself and walked out.The bodyguard outside gave me a suspicious look but said nothing.I sat back down beside Dad, lowered my head, and buried my hands in my hair, playing the part of a terrified, distraught teenager. The hallway was deathly silent.I had no idea how much time had passed when the phone in Dad's pocket gave a faint buzz. He practically lunged for it and unlocked the screen.I watched him closely from the corner of my eye.For a split second, unmistakable elation flashed across his face. He immediately suppressed it and replaced it with a mask of grief, but that fraction of a second was all I needed. He stood and walked over to me, looking down with a sickening imitation of sympathy. "Finn, I just got some terrible news."My head snapped up.He sighed and shook his head as if he could barely bring himself to say it. "Miles just cal

His body went limp and started to fall backward."Grandpa!"My eyes widened, and I lunged forward to catch him.Grandpa clutched my hand tightly. His lips moved, but before he could get a single word out, he lost consciousness completely. The wail of an approaching ambulance grew louder, its siren echoing across the school grounds.Holding my unconscious grandfather, I looked at Dad. There wasn't a trace of guilt on his face. If anything, I caught a flicker of satisfaction in his eyes.Rage surged through me.Inside the ambulance, I pulled out my phone and called my mother. The moment she answered, I heard an airport announcement in the background."Mom, Grandpa had a heart attack. We're on our way to the hospital.""What?!" Mom's voice immediately filled with panic. "I just landed. I'm coming right now!"My blood ran cold. She'd just landed. In my previous life, Mom had been rushing from the airport to the hospital when she was killed instantly in a horrific "accident."S

Blake grinned and reached for the cord that was supposed to be mine.Just before his fingers touched the red fabric—"Richard Livingston, you've got some nerve!"An elderly but powerful voice thundered from the back of the crowd, shaking with fury. The crowd parted on its own.Grandpa strode toward us with an ornate cane in hand, flanked by two bodyguards in black suits. Despite his age, he stood perfectly straight, his gaze as sharp as ever. The smug look on Dad's face froze instantly. He forced out a smile that looked more like a grimace. "Dad... what are you doing here?""If I hadn't come, you would've taken over the entire Stanton family while my back was turned!" Grandpa stepped onto the stage without even looking at Dad. He came straight to me and rested a weathered hand on my shoulder. "Finn, I'm sorry you had to go through this."I shook my head. My nose stung, and my eyes immediately grew hot. With Grandpa there, it felt as though I finally had someone solid standin
