Chapter 1

Author: Waverly June
The lunch bell shattered the silence of the classroom.

In the crowded cafeteria, Blake Livingston was surrounded by a group of classmates. He wore the latest limited-edition sneakers, and the Patek Philippe on his wrist gleamed under the overhead lights.

"Blake, what are we doing this weekend? That mountaintop race last time was insane!"

"Blake, I heard your family just got another Maybach?"

Blake soaked up the attention, a perfectly measured smile on his face. Every now and then, he'd make some modest remark, only to draw even more enthusiastic flattery.

Meanwhile, I sat quietly in the corner, an insignificant shadow in his wake.

As far as everyone at school knew, I was the pathetic charity case who could only afford to attend this elite private school because Blake supported me.

"Mrs. Livingston's here!" Someone's shout caused a small stir in the cafeteria.

Fanny Livingston, the plainly dressed housekeeper—and Blake's mother—made her way through the crowd carrying two lunch containers, a broad smile on her face.

She ignored me in the corner and went straight to Blake.

She opened an expensive insulated container, revealing four dishes and a bowl of soup. Steak, truffle mashed potatoes, and other delicacies filled the compartments, their rich aroma immediately drawing attention.

"Blake, eat while it's hot. I made your favorite lobster bisque today." Her voice was full of affection, her concern for him obvious in every glance.

Then she pushed a cheap plastic container toward me. Inside were nothing but limp vegetables and bean sprouts left over from the night before.

Expressionless, I reached for the cold container.

In my previous life, I'd silently endured treatment like this. All it had gotten me was increasingly vicious humiliation—and, in the end, the destruction of my entire family.

Just before my fingers touched the container, Blake reached out and stopped my hand. He deliberately raised his voice, making sure everyone around us could hear.

"Finn Stanton, this is the lunch my family's housekeeper made for me. I may treat you like a brother, but that doesn't mean you can just help yourself."

The moment he finished speaking, muffled laughter broke out around us.

"So he really is just a freeloader."

"God, he's shameless. I actually thought he and Blake were really friends."

"Just look at him. Does he seriously think he's on Blake's level?"

Their contemptuous stares pricked at me from every direction.

In my previous life, my face would already have been burning with humiliation. I would have turned and walked away, leaving Blake to bask in his victory.

But this time was different.

I'd been reborn.

The instant Blake said those words, memories of my previous life came crashing back.

The sickening weightlessness as I was shoved from the top of a building.

The excruciating pain of my bones shattering.

And Blake's twisted smile as I lay dying.

I slowly raised my head. My gaze swept over Blake's smug face before settling on the elaborate meal in front of him.

Under everyone's stunned gaze, I picked up the steaming bowl of lobster bisque.

Blake froze for a moment. Apparently thinking I was about to steal his food, he gave me a mocking smile.

"Finn, if you want some, just say so. There's no need to—"

The entire sequence was seamless and lightning fast.Blake tried to struggle, but Patrick drove a knee into his lower back. Blake immediately went limp, collapsing like a rag doll with nothing left but pained groans.Almost simultaneously, the hospital room door burst open. A group of police officers rushed in, the lead officer holding up his badge."We received a report of a premeditated attempted murder and kidnapping."The officers quickly surveyed the room and took control of everyone involved. The moment Fanny and Miles saw the police, they completely fell apart, collapsing to the floor. Two officers restrained Dad. He didn't resist. He simply stood there in a daze, muttering to himself, "It's over... It's all over..."Everything had gone exactly as I'd planned. From the moment I'd asked Patrick to intercept Miles, the outcome had already been decided.I watched without a flicker of emotion as the police hauled them away. Then one of the monitors beside Grandpa's bed made

Mom didn't bother responding to him again. She walked straight over to me and looked me over carefully. Only after confirming that I was unharmed did a trace of warmth enter her eyes."Finn, you've really grown up."Then her gaze swept over the documents on Grandpa's bed before landing on Fanny and Blake, who were on the floor trembling uncontrollably."You two have some nerve. Do you have a death wish?"In the face of absolute power, all their schemes and calculations fell apart like the pathetic joke they were. The agreement Dad had signed was now nothing more than a worthless piece of paper, a silent testament to his stupidity and greed."It's over... It's all over..." Blake muttered, his eyes vacant.Every dream he'd had, every ounce of pride he'd built his life around, shattered in an instant. He'd fallen from the very top, and there was nothing left to catch him."Oh, right." As though I'd only just remembered something, I woke my phone screen again and opened another fi

"These are the Stanton Group share transfer agreements, along with the inheritance documents for all the family's real estate."Dad picked up one of the documents and handed it to Blake, a manic gleam in his eyes. "Blake, sign it! Starting today, you'll be the true head of the Stanton family!"Blake's hands trembled with excitement. He'd dreamed of this day for years.I leaned against the doorway, watching the ugly spectacle with cold detachment."You're awfully sure his signature will actually mean anything," I said calmly.Dad turned and looked at me as though I were already dead. "Vivian is dead, and the old man doesn't have much longer. Everything the Stanton family owns will belong to my biological son.""Oh? Is that so?"My phone vibrated.Patrick had sent me a file.I opened it.It was a DNA paternity test.I turned the screen toward them and spoke unhurriedly, "There's something here I think you'll find interesting.""Blake Livingston..." I looked at him, enunciatin

I ended the call and handed the phone back to the man in the hospital gown."Thank you," I said hoarsely. Then I quickly composed myself and walked out.The bodyguard outside gave me a suspicious look but said nothing.I sat back down beside Dad, lowered my head, and buried my hands in my hair, playing the part of a terrified, distraught teenager. The hallway was deathly silent.I had no idea how much time had passed when the phone in Dad's pocket gave a faint buzz. He practically lunged for it and unlocked the screen.I watched him closely from the corner of my eye.For a split second, unmistakable elation flashed across his face. He immediately suppressed it and replaced it with a mask of grief, but that fraction of a second was all I needed. He stood and walked over to me, looking down with a sickening imitation of sympathy. "Finn, I just got some terrible news."My head snapped up.He sighed and shook his head as if he could barely bring himself to say it. "Miles just cal

His body went limp and started to fall backward."Grandpa!"My eyes widened, and I lunged forward to catch him.Grandpa clutched my hand tightly. His lips moved, but before he could get a single word out, he lost consciousness completely. The wail of an approaching ambulance grew louder, its siren echoing across the school grounds.Holding my unconscious grandfather, I looked at Dad. There wasn't a trace of guilt on his face. If anything, I caught a flicker of satisfaction in his eyes.Rage surged through me.Inside the ambulance, I pulled out my phone and called my mother. The moment she answered, I heard an airport announcement in the background."Mom, Grandpa had a heart attack. We're on our way to the hospital.""What?!" Mom's voice immediately filled with panic. "I just landed. I'm coming right now!"My blood ran cold. She'd just landed. In my previous life, Mom had been rushing from the airport to the hospital when she was killed instantly in a horrific "accident."S

Blake grinned and reached for the cord that was supposed to be mine.Just before his fingers touched the red fabric—"Richard Livingston, you've got some nerve!"An elderly but powerful voice thundered from the back of the crowd, shaking with fury. The crowd parted on its own.Grandpa strode toward us with an ornate cane in hand, flanked by two bodyguards in black suits. Despite his age, he stood perfectly straight, his gaze as sharp as ever. The smug look on Dad's face froze instantly. He forced out a smile that looked more like a grimace. "Dad... what are you doing here?""If I hadn't come, you would've taken over the entire Stanton family while my back was turned!" Grandpa stepped onto the stage without even looking at Dad. He came straight to me and rested a weathered hand on my shoulder. "Finn, I'm sorry you had to go through this."I shook my head. My nose stung, and my eyes immediately grew hot. With Grandpa there, it felt as though I finally had someone solid standin
