Chapter 3

Author: Waverly June
"Finn, you should come too. Don't let what happened at lunch get between us."

Blake put on a magnanimous act, as though the humiliation in the cafeteria had never happened.

He was certain I wouldn't dare show up.

My grandfather, Charles Stanton, who'd always doted on me more than anyone, happened to be away at a resort for a few days, while my mother, Vivian Stanton, was abroad on business.

With the real owners gone, Fanny had apparently decided she was the lady of the house.

If I went to the party, I'd only be setting myself up for humiliation, forced to watch Blake play the rich heir in my own home.

If I didn't go, it would only reinforce everyone's belief that I was petty and unreasonable.

Watching his pathetic little performance, I almost laughed.

He'd done the exact same thing in my previous life. With a single party, he'd humiliated me so thoroughly that I became the laughingstock of the entire school.

But this time...

I looked up and met his challenging stare, the faintest smile touching my lips.

"Sure." I calmly accepted his invitation. "I'd like to see what you think you can get away with in my house."

On Saturday, the Stanton estate was packed with people.

By the pool, girls in bikinis and athletic jocks laughed and splashed around, while the smell of barbecue mingled with alcohol in the air.

Dressed head to toe in designer casualwear, Blake moved effortlessly through the crowd with a drink in hand, every inch the host of the party.

Fanny had traded her usual clothes for a tasteful suit. Wearing a proud smile, she directed the temporary staff she'd hired for the event, perfectly playing the role of the estate manager.

"Blake, your house is insane!"

"Seriously, this place is like a palace!"

The envious looks and awed compliments from our classmates fed Blake's ego perfectly.

I sat alone on the second-floor terrace, watching the ridiculous spectacle below with cold amusement.

Then one of the girls, dressed to turn heads, spotted the enormous climate-controlled wine cellar in the living room and gasped. "Wait, Blake, is that Romanee-Conti? I've only ever seen it in magazines!"

Everyone immediately turned to look.

The collection belonged to my grandfather. Every bottle in it was worth a fortune.

Blake's expression stiffened for a moment, but he quickly recovered.

With dozens of people watching him, his need to show off won out. He waved a hand with exaggerated generosity. "You want to try it? Sure! Drinks are on me tonight!"

The crowd erupted in cheers.

Looking pleased with himself, Blake walked over to the wine cellar and reached for the most expensive bottle.

"I wouldn't touch that if I were you." My cool voice drifted down from upstairs.

Everyone looked up at me.

I slowly descended the stairs. "That's Grandpa's private collection. No one touches it without his permission."

Blake's face darkened immediately. He hated when I appeared in the middle of everyone fawning over him, like a ghost reminding him that none of this actually belonged to him.

Determined to assert his authority, he scoffed. "My parents don't care what I do. What makes you think you get a say? I'm opening it."

He grabbed the door and pulled.

It didn't budge.

He tried again. Then again, using more force each time, but the door remained firmly locked.

"What the hell?" A flicker of panic crossed his face.

I leaned casually against the banister. "Administrative passcode, fingerprint, and retinal scan. You didn't know?"

The cheers around him gradually died away. A few people began looking at Blake differently.

"You..." Beads of sweat appeared on his forehead as the awkward silence stretched on.

Finally, he looked to me for help, his tone noticeably softer. "Finn, you know the code, don't you? Come on. Help me out."

Blake immediately went limp, collapsing like a rag doll with nothing left but pained groans.Almost simultaneously, the hospital room door burst open. A group of police officers rushed in, the lead officer holding up his badge."We received a report of a premeditated attempted murder and kidnapping."The officers quickly surveyed the room and took control of everyone involved. The moment Fanny and Miles saw the police, they completely fell apart, collapsing to the floor. Two officers restrained Dad. He didn't resist. He simply stood there in a daze, muttering to himself, "It's over... It's all over..."Everything had gone exactly as I'd planned. From the moment I'd asked Patrick to intercept Miles, the outcome had already been decided.I watched without a flicker of emotion as the police hauled them away. Then one of the monitors beside Grandpa's bed made

Mom didn't bother responding to him again. She walked straight over to me and looked me over carefully. Only after confirming that I was unharmed did a trace of warmth enter her eyes."Finn, you've really grown up."Then her gaze swept over the documents on Grandpa's bed before landing on Fanny and Blake, who were on the floor trembling uncontrollably."You two have some nerve. Do you have a death wish?"In the face of absolute power, all their schemes and calculations fell apart like the pathetic joke they were. The agreement Dad had signed was now nothing more than a worthless piece of paper, a silent testament to his stupidity and greed."It's over... It's all over..." Blake muttered, his eyes vacant.Every dream he'd had, every ounce of pride he'd built his life around, shattered in an instant. He'd fallen from the very top, and there was nothing left to catch him."Oh, right." As though I'd only just remembered something, I woke my phone screen again and opened another fi

"These are the Stanton Group share transfer agreements, along with the inheritance documents for all the family's real estate."Dad picked up one of the documents and handed it to Blake, a manic gleam in his eyes. "Blake, sign it! Starting today, you'll be the true head of the Stanton family!"Blake's hands trembled with excitement. He'd dreamed of this day for years.I leaned against the doorway, watching the ugly spectacle with cold detachment."You're awfully sure his signature will actually mean anything," I said calmly.Dad turned and looked at me as though I were already dead. "Vivian is dead, and the old man doesn't have much longer. Everything the Stanton family owns will belong to my biological son.""Oh? Is that so?"My phone vibrated.Patrick had sent me a file.I opened it.It was a DNA paternity test.I turned the screen toward them and spoke unhurriedly, "There's something here I think you'll find interesting.""Blake Livingston..." I ended the call and handed the phone back to the man in the hospital gown."Thank you," I said hoarsely. Then I quickly composed myself and walked out.The bodyguard outside gave me a suspicious look but said nothing.I sat back down beside Dad, lowered my head, and buried my hands in my hair, playing the part of a terrified, distraught teenager. The hallway was deathly silent.I had no idea how much time had passed when the phone in Dad's pocket gave a faint buzz. He practically lunged for it and unlocked the screen.I watched him closely from the corner of my eye.For a split second, unmistakable elation flashed across his face. He immediately suppressed it and replaced it with a mask of grief, but that fraction of a second was all I needed. He stood and walked over to me, looking down with a sickening imitation of sympathy. "Finn, I just got some terrible news."My head snapped up.He sighed and shook his head as if he could barely bring himself to say it. "Miles just cal

His body went limp and started to fall backward."Grandpa!"My eyes widened, and I lunged forward to catch him.Grandpa clutched my hand tightly. His lips moved, but before he could get a single word out, he lost consciousness completely. The wail of an approaching ambulance grew louder, its siren echoing across the school grounds.Holding my unconscious grandfather, I looked at Dad. There wasn't a trace of guilt on his face. If anything, I caught a flicker of satisfaction in his eyes.Rage surged through me.Inside the ambulance, I pulled out my phone and called my mother. The moment she answered, I heard an airport announcement in the background."Mom, Grandpa had a heart attack. We're on our way to the hospital.""What?!" Mom's voice immediately filled with panic. "I just landed. I'm coming right now!"My blood ran cold. She'd just landed. In my previous life, Mom had been rushing from the airport to the hospital when she was killed instantly in a horrific "accident."S

Blake grinned and reached for the cord that was supposed to be mine.Just before his fingers touched the red fabric—"Richard Livingston, you've got some nerve!"An elderly but powerful voice thundered from the back of the crowd, shaking with fury. The crowd parted on its own.Grandpa strode toward us with an ornate cane in hand, flanked by two bodyguards in black suits. Despite his age, he stood perfectly straight, his gaze as sharp as ever. The smug look on Dad's face froze instantly. He forced out a smile that looked more like a grimace. "Dad... what are you doing here?""If I hadn't come, you would've taken over the entire Stanton family while my back was turned!" Grandpa stepped onto the stage without even looking at Dad. He came straight to me and rested a weathered hand on my shoulder. "Finn, I'm sorry you had to go through this."I shook my head. My nose stung, and my eyes immediately grew hot. With Grandpa there, it felt as though I finally had someone solid standin
