I turned and froze at the commotion coming from the private room.

Through the wall, I heard my husband’s voice, barely holding back his anger.

“You lost that game on purpose just to get under my skin, didn’t you?”

Laila sobbed and responded, “Well, maybe if you hadn’t ignored me all night and snapped at me for no reason, then I wouldn’t have done that.”

The next moment, heavy breathing came through the wall.

It was intimate, urgent, and completely uninhibited.

Even someone completely clueless would know exactly what was going on in there.

I bit my lip and touched the door handle. My grip tightened and loosened over and over, but I could not bring myself to push it open.

Leonard’s low, guttural groans cut into my heart like knives, over and over.

We had been together for seven years and married for three.

He had always been reserved and controlled when it came to intimacy.

Even under the most romantic circumstances, I had never seen him lose himself like this.

I had always assumed it was just his aloof personality at play, but I never expected he could be so uninhibited either.

The only difference was that I was not the one on the receiving end.

Tears welled up against my will.

I rushed into the restroom and locked the door behind me. Yet those sounds would not leave me alone, echoing relentlessly in my mind.

My stomach churned violently.

I leaned over the sink and vomited badly.

The call on my phone had not been disconnected.

A desolate laugh travelled through the earpiece.

“Heh, can’t handle that? Honey, you haven’t seen anything yet.”

Before her words faded, two familiar voices came from outside the door.

Noelle Grove, my best friend, spoke first.

“I was so nervous for Laila when she went up to Mr. Griffin just now.

“Good thing that idiot Iris was glued to her phone and didn’t catch on.”

My cousin Serena Scott laughed and said, “Right? The second Iris stepped out to take that call, those two couldn’t wait to duck into the private room.

“By now, who knows what they’re already doing?”

My heart sank.

I had trusted Noelle and Serena with my life.

Back when Noelle’s father, Harry Grove, tried to sell her off, I had scrimped and saved every penny to give her all my savings for her tuition and to rescue her from that nightmare.

She had cried in my arms, vowed to be my best friend for life, and would never leave me.

As for Serena, after her parents divorced, no one took care of her.

She had lived with me since childhood, and I treated her like my own younger sister.

Yet all this time, they had been keeping secrets and getting a good laugh at my expense. They even called me foolish.

When I pulled open the restroom door, Noelle and Serena, who had been laughing and chatting moments before, both froze with their smiles plastered on their faces.

Without saying anything, I walked past them and returned to the private room.

Leonard remained seated at the head of the table. He looked elegant and aloof, with a cool, unreadable expression.

The empty seat beside him was meant for me.

While I was away, he had piled my plate high with food. Peeled shrimp, cracked crab, and even boneless fish fillets were all there waiting for me.

Unfortunately, I was allergic to all seafood.

He personally picked up a piece of crab meat and brought it to my lips, as attentive as always.

I did not open my mouth.

My gaze drifted involuntarily towards Laila across the table.

Her lips were slightly swollen. Her collarbones were covered in hickeys. Yet she pretended to be innocent and well-behaved. She put on a look that made others feel pity for her.

I remembered what my future self from ten years had said.

They had been having an affair right under my nose for five years, and I never noticed.

Later, Laila showed up at my door with twins.

By the time I realized what was happening, the company shares had already changed hands.

Everything I had built over a lifetime had been given to her as a gift.

My nails dug into my palm until it bled.

I pushed the plate aside, stood up, and walked toward the door.

Two years later, the year-end report for Penvensie Group’s overseas project was released. The numbers more than doubled what I had promised. The moment I sent out the handover email, my window faced the old town of Varenna. Snow fell on the red rooftops, quietly and steadily.I turned off my computer, poured myself a glass of mulled wine, leaned by the window, and looked out for a long time. So this was what life felt like when I did not have to chase after anyone.News from home drifted in occasionally.I caught the headline about Griffin Group’s bankruptcy liquidation while transferring flights in Ostia. The title was dramatic, [A Business Empire Collapses Overnight.] My finger did not even pause as I scrolled past it.Later, I heard that Leonard was drowning in debt. His house and most of his cars were all sold off.He was living in a rundown rental on the outskirts of the city with a monthly rent of eight hundred dollars.Someone had seen him late at night, sitting in

Tobias was seated at his desk, processing documents. He had not expected Leonard to be foolish enough to forge legal documents. He had originally planned to expose Leonard and Laila’s affair to stir up publicity, but he could not act rashly. He feared that any misstep might inadvertently drag me into the mess.In the business world, the battlefield had always been ruthless, and Leonard had long been his fiercest rival. He had been trying to poach me for quite some time. Who would have thought that one day, I would come to him willingly, bringing not only half of Griffin Group’s shares but also their core technology, along with myself?Although the victory came easily, the lack of challenge made it feel dull.Just as he was lost in thought, he looked up and saw me walking in. This was our first meeting since that confrontation.I got straight to the point and handed him a contract from behind my back. He took it, flipped through it, and raised an eyebrow. “Have you made up your

My conversation with Leonard was heard by Laila, who was standing outside the door. She had not seen Leonard for three days.He had locked himself in his office all day and refused to see anyone, as if he were the one going through a breakup. This was not like him. No matter how busy he used to be, even when she was in his direct line of sight, he would still find ways to sneak off and flirt with her at her workstation. He would even avoid the cameras and pin her in a corner for a deep kiss. That thrill of secrecy made her certain that Leonard loved her.But I was no longer at the company. She paraded herself in front of him every day, yet he would not even give her a proper glance. Forget about intimacy. He would not even have a meal with her.She had gone to see him several times, but his assistant, Ben Steward, always turned her away at the door. This extreme contrast and sense of loss nearly drove her to a breakdown. And today, as she stood right outside his office door,

Tobias was indeed a formidable rival. After he got my core technology, he attacked from all sides. He cut off their business, outmaneuvered them strategically, and destroyed their reputation in the media. With all three attacks at once, the Griffin Group could not hold on much longer.Leonard had locked himself in his office for days. He worked without rest.Without my technical support, the company had fallen into complete disarray.Cornered by the dire situation, he finally could not help but call me.“Are you free? Can we talk?”I sneered. “Talk about what? About how you conned me into a fake marriage?”Leonard did not deny it. He knew I would find out sooner or later. His hand gripped the phone so tightly that it turned pale.“Can you just give me a chance to explain?”I nodded and said, “Fine. Then explain.”He paused for a moment before explaining, “Laila is my mentor’s daughter. He entrusted her to me on his deathbed.“I went through with the marriage with her to

As I had expected, Leonard did not show up at the courthouse the next day.I went in first, took a number, filled out the forms, and signed them.I planned to wait another half hour for him. If he did not come, I would hire a lawyer and file for divorce. But when I handed the forms to the clerk, she looked up at me several times with confusion.“Ma’am, are you sure you have the right information? Our system shows no marriage record under your name.”My mind went completely blank. I handed over Leonard’s information. “Please check this man’s marital status for me.”The clerk entered his information and looked up. “His spouse is listed as Ms. Laila Nachtman.”My body turned rigid. It turned out he had already been scheming against me back when he married me three years ago.No wonder that phone call from my future self told me that I would go crazy. If I had not known in advance, I really would have lost my mind by the end of it all.I thought, “Leonard, you pushed me to

I turned and saw a man in a perfectly tailored suit stride through the door with a lazy smirk. His features were sharp and cold. He carried himself with quiet authority. Leonard’s expression instantly darkened.“Mr. Penvensie, I wasn’t aware that you would be visiting. To what do I owe the pleasure?”Tobias Penvensie glanced at me casually and said, “I’m here to pick up my Director of Technology, Ms. Lyon. That’s all.”He gave a slight nod, and a team of men in black emerged and secured the place.Leonard frowned deeply and said, “Mr. Penvensie, you come into my company and detain my employees. Don’t you think that’s a bit much?“I’ve been polite because you’re a guest. But if you keep this up, I won’t be so nice.”Tobias’ assistant, Otto Vassal, walked straight up and handed him a document. Leonard flipped it open, and the color drained from his face.It was a thick pile of documents, each one stamped with the official company seal. The entire document boiled down to one
