Chapter 1

"Mr. Rogers, I'm working late tonight. You can head home."

My wife, Rachel Lloyd, walked out of the conference room and passed right by me without slowing down. She tossed the words over her shoulder and headed straight for her office.

I stood up, about to say something, when her phone rang.

The moment she answered, her voice changed. It turned soft and almost playful.

"Jeff? You're here? Okay, I'll come down and get you."

Jeff.

Jeff Gibson.

Rachel's college sweetheart, who had spent the past three years abroad, was finally back.

I watched her disappear into the elevator, then let out a bitter laugh. I pulled out my phone and texted our daughter Noelle Rogers’ preschool teacher.

Zane: [Ms. Porter, I'll be there on time to pick Noelle up today.]

The teacher replied almost immediately.

Ms. Porter: [Okay, Mr. Rogers. Noelle drew a picture today. She said she wants to give it to her mommy.]

I stared at the word ‘mommy’, and something twisted painfully inside my chest.

Noelle had no idea that Rachel had never once looked at any of the pictures she drew for her.

Once, Noelle had spent an entire month drawing pictures. She carefully placed the whole stack on Rachel's nightstand.

The next morning, every single one of those pictures sat neatly in the trash.

Noelle did not cry. After that, she stopped drawing pictures for her mother for a long time.

I packed up my things and headed downstairs. The moment I stepped out of the elevator, I saw three people standing in the lobby: Rachel, Jeff, and a little boy who looked about four or five years old.

The boy looked a lot like Jeff. He tugged on Rachel's sleeve and said in his squeaky voice, "Ms. Lloyd, I want ice cream."

Jeff laughed and gently ruffled his hair. "Timothy, stop bothering Ms. Lloyd."

Rachel crouched down, a rare softness appearing on her face.

"Okay! I'll take you to get some."

She stood up and glanced in my direction, her eyes passing over me as if I were a complete stranger.

I lowered my head and walked past them.

As I passed, I heard Jeff ask, "Rachel, how are you still single after all these years?"

Rachel did not answer. She simply laughed, and there was a softness in her voice that I had not heard in years.

When I arrived at Noelle's preschool, she was standing at the entrance, rising onto her tiptoes as she peered outside.

The moment she saw my car, her eyes lit up.

"Daddy!"

I got out and scooped her into my arms. She wrapped her arms around my neck and whispered, "Daddy, is Mommy coming home for dinner tonight?"

My heart tightened.

"Mommy's busy with work. She might not come home tonight."

"Oh..." Noelle lowered her head. Then, she looked up again, her eyes sparkling. "Then we can wait for Mommy to come home before we eat! I drew a picture, and I want to show her!"

I looked at her smiling face. I could not bring myself to tell her that Mommy was not coming home, so I simply nodded.

"Okay. We'll wait for Mommy."

At nine that night, Noelle sat on the living room rug with her picture clutched in her hands, staring at the front door.

Ten o'clock came.

Then eleven.

Noelle eventually curled up against me, her eyelids growing heavier by the minute. Still, she fought to stay awake.

"Mommy... Mommy will be home soon, right?"

I gently patted her back. "Go to sleep. Daddy's right here."

"When Mommy comes home, Daddy, wake me up..."

"Okay."

Noelle fell asleep, still clutching her picture tightly in one hand.

At two in the morning, I heard the lock turn.

Rachel pushed the door open, a faint smell of alcohol clinging to her.

When she saw me sitting on the couch with Noelle in my arms, she froze for a moment. Then she frowned.

"Why are you two still awake?"

I looked at her calmly. "Noelle was waiting for you."

"Why?"

"She drew you a picture. She wanted to show it to you."

Rachel glanced at the picture in Noelle's hands. It showed three people drawn in crayon: a mother in a dress, a father wearing glasses, and a little girl with pigtails. They were holding hands beneath a huge yellow sun.

Rachel looked away.

"I've got work tomorrow. You should go to bed early too."

She turned toward the bedroom. Then, just as she reached the door, she stopped.

"Oh, right. There’s a parent-child activity at Noelle's preschool tomorrow. You’ll go."

"But..."

"I have plans tomorrow." She did not turn around. "Jeff just got back, and there are a lot of places he isn't familiar with. I need to take him around and help him get a few things done."

I held Noelle in my arms and stared at the closed bedroom door.

I could not say a word.

Noelle stirred against me and murmured sleepily, "Mommy..."

I lowered my head. There were tears at the corners of her eyes.

She had never really fallen asleep.

When Rachel finished humming, she lifted her head and looked at me."What are you thinking about?""Nothing." I smiled. "I just think things are pretty good right now."She smiled and rested her head against my shoulder again."Yeah. They are."Noelle's laughter continued to ring across the yard.Nellie barked happily as she chased her own tail in circles.A gentle night breeze drifted past, carrying the faint scent of blooming flowers. I closed my eyes and took it all in.Sometimes, fate was strange. It made people go through pain, disappointment, and despair, and then, when they least expected it, it gave everything beautiful back to them.Three years ago, when I left with Noelle, I thought that was how my life would end up. Now I knew better. It had not been the end at all. It had only been the beginning, and every road we had taken since then had led us there. "Daddy!" Noelle came running over. "Come play with me!"I opened my eyes and looked at her rosy little face.

Three years had passed. The building was still the same. The trees by the entrance had grown a little taller, and there was a new security guard at the gate."Sir, you can stop here," Rachel said. She got out of the car and stood at the entrance, looking inside. I got out with Noelle in my arms.Noelle looked around and said softly, "Daddy, I remember this place.""What do you remember?""There was a slide here." She pointed toward the playground in the distance. "I used to play there."I nodded.Rachel walked over. "Want to take a look?"I looked at her, then nodded. We walked into the complex. We passed the building, then the playground, then the building where we used to live. When we stopped downstairs, Rachel looked up at one of the windows."We used to live up there," she said.I recognized it."Want to go upstairs and take a look?" I asked. She shook her head."Never mind."We stood there without saying anything. After a while, Noelle tugged on my hand."Daddy,

After we finished the cake, Noelle went to bed.Rachel and I sat together on the balcony, looking out at the city lights."Thank you," I said."You don't have to thank me," she said. "It was the least I could do."I looked at her.She turned toward me."Zane, I want to tell you something.""What?""These past few months, I've finally realized something."I said nothing and waited."I used to think my career was more important than my family. I thought making money mattered more than being there for the people I loved. I thought that as long as I gave you money, I was doing my part."She paused."I finally realized I was wrong. Noelle didn't need my money. She needed you."I realized I didn't need more money either. What I really needed was you both."She looked at me."I want to start over with you, not because you're my husband or because Noelle is my daughter, but because I love you both."I looked at her for a long time. Then, I reached out and took her hand. She fr

I said nothing."I know I don't deserve it," Rachel said. "I know I've made so many mistakes. However, over the past few months, I've had a lot of time to think about everything. "I used to be selfish, always putting myself first and never stopping to think about you or Noelle. I cannot change the mistakes I made in the past, but I want to change the way I live from now on. I want to treat you right and be there for Noelle."She paused."You don't have to answer me right now. Take your time. I just want you to know that I want to stay, not only for Noelle, but for you too."I looked into her eyes for a long time before finally speaking."Rachel, do you know how long I waited to hear you say that?"She froze."Three years," I said. "From the day we got married, I waited for you to say those words. Eventually, I stopped waiting because I knew you never would."Her eyes filled with tears."I'm sorry."I shook my head."You don't have to apologize. You chose your path, and so

She started talking to Rachel on her own and even asked her to help brush her hair. When Rachel cooked, Noelle would drag a little stool into the kitchen and sit in the doorway, watching her.Rachel was always careful around her, afraid of doing anything that might scare her away. One day, I took Noelle to the grocery store. On the way there, she suddenly asked, "Daddy, is Mommy going to stay here forever?"I froze."Do you want her to stay?"She thought about it for a long time."I don't know," she said. "I'm scared she'll leave one day."My heart tightened."Why are you scared she will leave?""Because she left for such a long time before." Noelle lowered her head. "I'm scared she will leave again."I crouched down and looked into her eyes."Noelle, do you want her to stay?"She nodded."Then Daddy will tell her to stay.""Will she listen?""She will."That night, I talk

I looked at Rachel."I've had everything at the company arranged," she said. "I can work remotely. I want to stay here for a while and spend time with Noelle."I said nothing."I know I'm not in a position to ask for this," she continued. "But I really want to make things right. Even if she never accepts me, even if she calls me Ms. Lloyd forever, I still want to be here for her."I looked at her for a long time before speaking."Rachel, have you really thought this through?""I have.""This might not be for a day or two. It could be a very long time.""I know.""Noelle might never accept you."Rachel fell silent for a moment, then nodded."I know," she said. "I still want to try."That night, she stayed at a hotel downstairs.I sat alone in the living room and thought about everything for a long time. The next morning, I told her, "You can stay, but don't pressure Noelle.
