Dylan
“Get your ass up and go fly the border, boy.” My father scolds me as I was just getting comfortable on the couch. “Ugh, really? I did it this morning, surely you could have literally anyone else do it? What about all those people you rule over?” My father roars, spitting bits of fire as he threatens to shift in front of me. Mum would kick his ass if he shifted in the house again and then she’d probably kick mine for pushing his buttons. “Do you not understand that our family needs to set an example to the rest of the community?! You are the son of a member of the council! People are always watching!” He yells on and on about stupid council shit until I leave. I honestly couldn’t give two fucks what people think of me. I never asked to be a part of the council. If I’m being honest, I’m not even sure I support it. I can only imagine if the shoe was on the other foot, how it would feel to be killed just because you were born a certain way. Those people didn’t ask to be born with magic, and not all of them have done something wrong. Just like not all shifters are good and do good things. My father certainly isn’t good. He’s a fucking ass wipe, out murdering complete species just because they’re more powerful than he is. I reach the edge of the mountain our village is set upon and shift, letting my dragon out as we take to the sky and circle the perimeter. Another dragon sees me coming for his position and retreats. Probably to go home and eat dinner with his family, just like I’d like to do. I circle my area for a while until I become utterly bored and head down a little further looking for an animal to hunt. My dragon loves a good chase just as much as I do, and it’s not like the village is unsafe if I leave my post. You’d have to be stupid or have a death wish to invade a dragon village. I spot a wild boar, there’s always plenty on the mountain and I dive low to grab it with my talons when the most earth shattering, mouth watering scent hits me and I falter. I miss the pig by amount ten meters and nosedive into the ground, flipping and rolling until my back hits a large oak tree and fall sideways with a huge thump. I quickly shake it off, getting back to my feet and putting my nose into the air, inhaling as deeply as possible as I search for the scent. It’s like a warm apple pie, with a huge cinnamon kick. I had been craving apple pie for a good month now for some reason. It had become my favourite food. *Mate!* My dragon tells me. I take one step in the direction I think it’s coming from, and it disappears. It’s just fucking gone! I to roar to the fucking Gods, before I think…If my mate isn’t a dragon shifter, I might scare them. I have a mate! And now, I must find her and keep her safe. I’ll protect her and provide for her, and we can build a family, and I’ll make us a home where we can watch our children grow.I take to the sky again, staying low as I look through the trees for any sign of her. Hours pass with no sign, no scent. I’m starting to think I just imagined it…but my dragon is sure. Our mate was here… It’s getting late by the time my mum comes to find me.
“You need to rest, Dylan. Tomorrow we’re expected to stand by your father as he gives another speech to the village about our success in defeating the resistance.” She mind links me as she flies closer. “You and I know that’s a load of dragon shit, mum. No one has seen or heard from the resistance in months.” “Yes, but it keeps the people from being scared. Sometimes a little lie is for the greater good.” “Whatever you say mum.” We fly back up the hill together. She doesn’t bother addressing the fact that I was so far off my post and I shift back, grabbing my clothes from where I left them and heading inside the house. “There’s dinner on the stove.” Mum says as she follows me in and heads in the other direction. Mum has always been the kinder of two evils when it comes to my parents, but still, she’s never once bothered to actually be a parent. Not like those mothers you see playing with their kids or showing up to their school events. I don’t think we’ve ever actually shared a meal together. She only had me because dad wanted an heir and oh how disappointed he was to get me. The son who doesn’t give a fuck about his status. I swear, at the first chance I get, I’m out of here. I just need to find that reason to go. Until then I guess I’ll play along with his little façade and act like the honourable son of the great and mighty Damicus Rommati.DylanThere’s a stillness when Layah steps into the center of the clearing. It’s not quiet. The wind still whispers through the trees, birds still call from overhead, and Kai is still muttering beside me about his singed shirt. But everything else, the air, the earth, even the light feels like it’s holding its breath. Then Layah exhales, and her body begins to glow. It starts at her feet, a golden shimmer that races up her legs like morning sunlight. Her boots vanish, and when the light fades, she’s barefoot, toes sinking into the grass as if she belongs to it. A white dress, soft and flowing, wraps itself around her like magic heard her say "something deadly, but make it beautiful." Her blonde hair spills down her back in loose waves, catching the light like spun gold and then the wings appear. Not soft or gossamer. Blades. Huge, multi-coloured translucent wings, sharp as razors and glowing with shifting hues, violet, gold, silver, green. Each edge refracts the light like a prism but
DylanI’ve never been one to flinch from a fight. Steel, flame, fists, I know those. But this? This is something else entirely. Magic hums under my skin like a second heartbeat. Not mine. Hers. Layah’s. And it’s alive. I stand in the clearing behind the cabin, early morning dew clinging to my boots, while Layah paces in front of me with a look that’s half fond exasperation, half drill sergeant.“Okay,” she says, clapping once. “We start small. Emotion-based manifestation. Think of a feeling, channel it, and release it outward. Don’t aim at anything living.”I nod, inhale deeply, and close my eyes. Feeling. Okay. Easy enough. I think of Layah. Her smile, her scent, her body wrapped around mine the night we bonded. My chest tightens instantly, desire, love, fear. The emotion rises like a wave, swelling behind my ribs and just like that...Boom. A tree ten feet away explodes into a burst of glittery gold vines that rapidly grow up and around it like a bejeweled jungle had a baby with a Ch
Kai is still buried deep inside me, his forehead resting against mine as our breaths mingle, rough and uneven. The grass beneath me is damp with dew and crushed beneath our bodies, but I’ve never felt more grounded. More real. I’m still catching my breath when I hear the sound of someone clearing their throat. Loudly. Deliberately. Kai tenses above me. I freeze. A beat of silence.“Well,” Dylan says, from a very close distance, “I was coming to tell you dessert is ready, but clearly someone already ate.”I groan, covering my face with my hands as heat floods my cheeks.Kai doesn’t even flinch. He just grins wickedly and slowly, obnoxiously, rolls off of me, stretching like a smug cat. “You’re just mad you didn’t get seconds.”“Oh my gods,” I mutter into my hands.Dylan lets out a huff of laughter. “Trust me, I felt enough of it to need a shower. Thanks for the mental images. Truly.”Kai smirks up at him, completely unrepentant. “You’re welcome.”“You’re both the worst,” I mumble, sitt
LayahThe moon’s risen high by the time the others finally drift to bed after a full day of planning. We've decided a small group of us with tether portal there to save us time and get us prepared. It'll be a stretch of my magic, but I think I can manage five of us. I find myself out in the cool night air, sitting on the back steps of the house with a blanket wrapped around my shoulders and a storm of thoughts in my head. I hear the door creak behind me and don’t need to turn to know it’s Kai. His steps are unmistakable confident but quiet, deliberate. Like he’s always balancing power and control. Like he knows how much space he takes up and how to soften it. He lowers himself beside me without a word, arms brushing mine. The silence stretches, comfortable for a few heartbeats. Then I speak.“You don’t have to come.”He stiffens beside me, just a little. “To vampire territory?”I nod, staring out at the trees. He’s quiet for a moment. Then, voice low, he asks, “Why are you saying this
LayahThe air is light and happy, exactly how it should be right now. Nanna’s still sparkling with flour, Dylan’s fingers trail glitter, and the tiny illusionary unicorn prances on the kitchen counter like it owns the place. For one fleeting moment, it’s perfect. That is, until Matt walks in. He freezes just inside the door, staring at the unicorn with the haunted look of a man who's seen some shit.“Fuck. Not this again!” he groans, slapping a hand over his eyes like it might shield him from magical trauma. “I still have nightmares about the unicorn from the last time.”We all burst out laughing.“It’s not like the last time,” I say, trying to suppress a grin. “Don’t worry, this one’s just an illusion.”“An illusion that likes to play flour tricks,” Nanna mutters, still dusting powder from her silver curls. “I swear to the gods, if it shits rainbows on my good table...”“What’s that?” Kai interrupts, pointing to the paper in Matt’s hand.Matt hesitates. “Uh... yeah. This came for you
KaiBy the time we make it back to the house, the sun is high, and my body is aching in the best possible way. Layah walks between Dylan and me, tucked under both our arms, and the bond between us hums like it’s alive. Like it’s feeding off the warmth in her laugh, the brush of her fingers along ours, the echo of last night still lingering on our skin The moment the front door creaks open, peace is shattered by Nanna’s voice booming from the kitchen.“There you are! I swear to the Gods…”She rounds the corner, a flour-dusted wooden spoon in one hand, then halts mid-step. Eyes. Narrow. “What. In the name of fire and bone… is that?”I blink. “What?”She jabs a finger toward my neck. “That, boy. The glowing claw mark painted on your skin like it was left by a rainbow-drunk war god.”Layah stiffens slightly between us, but I squeeze her hand. "It happened last night. When we… when we mated.”Nanna’s already crossing the room. She grips my jaw, tilting my face this way and that, examining
