Chapter 4

Author: Summer Forest
I tightened my grip on the report.

Apparently, I had been pregnant for three weeks.

The reality constructed from those few words was like a huge boulder weighing on my chest. I couldn't catch my breath.

Honestly, I used to long for a child.

When I caught sight of other families with children, I would always try to imagine what our child would look like.

I wondered if the child would look more like Keith or me.

Sadly, Keith only got busier at work, so we had been continuously delaying preparations for conception.

Ironically, right after I handed Keith the divorce agreement, I was found pregnant.

What bad timing.

Just then, the door to the ward suddenly opened, and Keith walked in.

He was holding the envelope I had asked Sonia to pass to him earlier, and he had a foul look on his face.

The next second, he flung the envelope at me. Frowning, he said, "I've signed the document. Buying a house is a private matter, so don't bring anything like that to the hospital ever again. What is Sonia going to think if she sees this?"

I suppressed the urge to laugh.

As it turned out, he thought this was paperwork for our new home.

So, he didn't even look at the contents before signing it.

That worked in my favor. I wouldn't have to get into a messy argument with him.

I quietly stuffed the divorce agreement into my bag.

It felt like a weight was lifted off my shoulders.

Noticing that I hadn't said anything, Keith softened a little. "Rest up, then. I still have work to do, so I'll be off now."

Gazing at his calm expression, I couldn't help but ask, "Keith, aren't you curious why I'd be lying on a hospital bed?"

Keith was taken aback for a moment. Then, he said indifferently, "It's just low blood sugar, isn't it? It's not the first time this happens, anyway. Just go home when you've recovered. You're taking up medical resources, you know."

I stared at him, stunned. I felt like someone was squeezing my heart, inflicting a dull, suffocating ache.

It was true that I had low blood sugar.

He used to keep some candies in his pocket. Sometimes, it would be chocolate, and other times, it would be fruit candies.

Whenever I wasn't feeling well, he would just stuff one in my mouth.

I wasn't sure when it started, but it had been a long time since he had any candies in his pocket.

Last week, when I was doing the laundry, I found a hair tie in the pocket of his white coat instead. It was light blue with a bunny accessory on it.

I had seen Sonia wear it before.

At that thought, I felt extremely weary. I was so exhausted that I didn't even have the energy to question him about it.

Looking at Keith, I parted my lips.

I was wondering how I should tell him about the child when someone opened the door to the ward.

"Dr. Reed." A young doctor strode in, looking panicked. "The patient in bed number 32 isn't looking too good. The family members are very agitated, and they're threatening to hit Ms. Peterson. Please check in on them."

Keith's expression shifted. Without any hesitation, he turned around and left.

He didn't even spare me a single glance.

Sonia Peterson had occupied both his heart and his gaze.

I watched as he hurried away in anxiety.

The last slivers of attachment in my heart completely disappeared.

A long while later, I lowered my head and gently touched my belly. It was quite flat, and I couldn't feel anything at all, but I knew there was a child inside, the child I used to eagerly look forward to.

Sadly, it was too late.

I closed my eyes and made up my mind. Then, I pressed the button to call the nurse over.

Tightening my grip on the examination report, I slowly said, "I'd like to get an abortion."

The nurse froze. "What?"

I looked out the window. The afternoon sun should be warm, but all I felt was coldness. "Now. Immediately. The sooner, the better."

Looking at Keith, I said in a calm voice, "From the day my dad died, we were never supposed to have a future together."Keith froze on the spot.A long while later, he suddenly let out a bitter and pathetic chuckle. He looked like a gambler who had finally lost every single chip in his hands."I see." He nodded, his voice hoarse as he said, "Clara, I won't bother you ever again."With that, he turned around and left. His footsteps were excruciatingly slow, but he never once looked back.I stood where I was, watching him slowly walk away until he melted into the shadows at the far end of the corridor.I didn't feel any sense of relief or sorrow. Instead, I only felt an extremely faint sense of peace. It was like a book that had finally reached its last page.…Five years later, Hailey and I sat on the bank of a river in Valis, drinking wine. Her experience in the past five years had turned her into a fiercely capable woman. Ultimately, Mom made it out of the woods. The specialist team adjusted the treatment plan. A week later, she was successfully transferred out of the ICU.I was sitting on the bench outside the ward when I heard the news. I buried my face in my hands and sobbed for a long, long time. All the fear, anxiety, and helplessness that had been accumulating inside me finally found release."Clara." Ruben handed me a tissue and crouched down in front of me. There was a hint of flustered clumsiness in his tone as he asked, "Your mother is safe now, so why are you crying?"I took the tissue and wiped my red-rimmed eyes. "Thank you. Ruben, you really are a kind soul."If it weren't for Ruben, I don't know how I would've survived the past few days.Ruben scratched his head as he sheepishly averted his gaze. "Actually, I didn't exactly do all this out of kindness."I froze. He looked at me, his gaze earnest, clear, and straightforward. "It's because I like you."I was stunned, and for a mom

I called the cops, and Sonia was taken away. She had intentionally provoked a patient after surgery to cause a relapse, and that would be added to her charges once the investigation into the major blood loss incident concluded.A punishment far worse than getting fired awaited her, but I couldn't be bothered to find out what happened to her in the end.Mom's condition took a turn for the worse. As I waited outside the ICU, the doctors handed me one critical condition notice after another.I hadn't slept a wink for two whole days. I simply stared through the glass window at my mom, who was lying on the bed and covered in tubes.Every single shift in the numbers on the monitor was like a dull blade sawing away at my nerves.Over the past few days, Keith stayed put in the hospital as well. He got even less sleep than I did, and he had dark circles under his eyes. But as I looked at him, I couldn't feel an inkling of gratitude inside me. I only felt a persistent sense of disgust.

"The surgery was a success, so logically speaking, her condition couldn't have worsened all of a sudden." The doctor was confused. "Unless… there was some sort of intense external trigger."My heart sank. "A trigger?"The doctor nodded. "Her emotions must be kept as stable as possible after surgery, especially with her fluctuating heart rate and blood pressure. Were there any unusual circumstances earlier today?""Unusual circumstances?" I repeated in my head. My thoughts were getting jumbled up.Mom had just had her operation. Aside from medical staff and family members, no one had come in contact with her.Hold on.I whipped my head up. "Check the surveillance cameras."Half an hour later, we were all in the security room as the footage was retrieved.People were walking past the entrance of the ward, and nurses entered and exited the ward with trays in their hands. Then, in the afternoon, a figure showed up.It was Sonia.I held my breath and subconsciously glanced at Keit

After receiving the call, I rushed back to my hometown overnight. When I arrived at the corridor outside the emergency room, Mom was still being resuscitated inside. The doctor had a grave look on his face. "She's in critical condition, and she has to undergo surgery right away. However, our hospital is not equipped for the surgery. We recommend transferring her to another hospital."My blood ran cold.I felt like I had gone back to that day three years ago.Back then, Dad was lying on the hospital bed, and the doctor told me the same thing.A terrible thought crossed my mind. "I lost my father that day. Am I going to lose my mother too?"I lost my balance, and I almost fainted on the spot.Just then, Keith hurried over. "I'll do it."Everyone at the scene was stunned. The doctor recognized him. "Are you… Dr. Reed? Dr. Keith Reed?"Keith nodded. "Show me the medical records."In just a few minutes, he came to a swift conclusion. "It's doable. Quick, get ready. I'll perform

For the next few days, wherever I went, Keith would follow. He stayed at the same hotel and visited the same scenic spots as I did. Even for meals, he went to the same restaurant I dined at.I knew that ignoring him would be the best retaliation. So, I pretended he didn't exist as I enjoyed the views and took photos. However, Ruben couldn't stand it anymore."Sir." In a restaurant, Ruben set down his fork. "Are you a stalker or something?"Keith didn't even look up as he placed a chicken wing on my plate. "I'm on a road trip with my wife. That's hardly stalking."Despite the smile on his face, Ruben's tone was sharp. "Allow me to correct you again. She's your ex, not your wife."The air instantly became thick with tension.I massaged my temples, feeling a headache coming on. "Can you two just shut up?"The two simultaneously fell silent and turned to look at me.It was such an odd situation that I felt like I was traveling with two bickering kids.I couldn't be bothered to h
