Brewster walked out of the hospital with his head down.

He had walked around the garden, trying to gather his thoughts before meeting Jimmy as he feared worrying the young man.

Jimmy had tried so much for him. He'd picked him up from the Cafe he used to work in, the first place he decided to make some money from after things went down the drain with his family but things weren't looking up at the Cafe either.

He was too young and naive. The boss was too callous, and he would sometimes renege on his payment. The boss believed that Brewster had no one to fight for him, but Jimmy did.

Not only did he fight, but he also took Brewster away, rented a studio apartment for him, and introduced him to the industry. However, the industry was just as bad as the outside world.

Brewster was scammed. Where Jimmy could not see, he was made to sign a document that cut off his survival route. As someone with no backing, he was rendered helpless and made a slave to work his ass off while getting little payment. But that wasn't the end... they wouldn't even give him any resources!

Brewster let out a deep breath, deciding to forget the things that made his heart ache and focus on the bright future that awaited him... he hoped.

"Brother Jimmy!" Brewster called, forcing a cheerful smile on his face.

Jim looked toward him and waved back. He walked to stand before Brewster, "How is your mum?" He sounded worried.

Brewster's eyes dimmed significantly, but he smiled again, "She seems to be getting better." He paused and shrugged, almost nonchalantly. "I just need to make a lot of money now, and she will be fine." He added.

He strode toward the car, leaving Jim behind as his smile faltered and sadness returned to his eyes. He opened the car door and stepped in. Seeing that Jim had entered the car, his sadness disappeared, and a smile returned to his face, "We should return home." He suggested.

Jim nodded. "We should eat something before then. I will stop at the restaurant ahead."

Brewster was about to respond when his phone vibrated in his pocket. He brought it out, and his confusion glinted in his eyes for a few seconds before it receded. His heart raced slightly... 'I think I can start making some money already...' He mumbled to himself as he read the message on his phone's screen.

"Brother Jimmy, please take me to the STAR HOTEL."

Jim raised a brow, "He called?"  His tone was low and sad.

Brewster lowered his eyes, and his mood remained unreadable. "Yes, he did. He wants to see me as fast as possible." He explained.

Jim sighed deeply. He ruffled his hair and cursed under his breath. He started the car and drove off, not saying another word to Brewster. He knew nothing could stop the man from seeing the little guy, and stopping him now wouldn't make things nice for both of them.

Jim drove to the hotel and watched silently as Brewster entered the hotel. He wasn't a fool. He could see how Ace saw Brewster as nothing but a plaything, and he also knew that to someone like Ace, Brewster wasn't worth much.

Ace was dangerous, especially to a young and vulnerable Brewster...

Jim held the steering so tight that his knuckles turned white. He closed his eyes for a while as if deliberating something, and soon enough, he opened his eyes and searched for his phone. He tentatively dialed a number and placed the phone to his ear. "If I do what you asked, will you allocate more resources to Brewster?" His tone was hoarse, but his eyes showed determination.

A masculine laughter rang across the phone, followed by a string of words that only Jim could understand. His jaw clenched, "I will do anything. Did you not target him because of me? I will do whatever you ask. Just make Brewster famous." Jim said with every breath he could muster.

His hands trembled, and the phone nearly fell. His eyes grew red, but his lips slowly curled up, indicating how relieved he felt. "I will meet you at the hotel then." He said, and his hand shook as he ended the call.

He looked toward the STAR HOTEL again and nodded his head. "Don't worry, Brewster. I will protect you from now on." He mumbled under his breath and started the car, leaving his exhaust filling the heavy air.

Brewster entered the suite, and sitting in bed in a bathrobe with a laptop on his lap was Ace. The dim lighting highlighted his handsome features, and his strong biceps were on full display.

Hearing the door open, he raised his eyes slightly and glanced at Brewster.

Brewster breathed hitched. He could feel Ace's terrible mood.

Ace returned his gaze to his laptop, "Wash up." He ordered.

Brewster nodded and slowly dragged his feet to the bathroom. His mind wandered as he opened the shower, letting the water pour over his body while he rubbed it. "I hope... he pays me this time." He silently wished.

Brewster and Jim found that all the things they brought had been taken by the bodyguards. "Can we enter now?" Brewster asked the men timidly. The men nodded. None of them said a word, but they paved the way for the brothers. Brewster bowed slightly and flashed a smile. After which, he caught Jim's hand and led him in. Finally, he had been allowed to enter Ace's mansion. He had been curious about what the place someone as cold and detached as Ace would look like. Would it look like those apartments in fairy tales or like the ones he used to see in movies? Or maybe like his family's former mansion? But he hadn't been able to choose any of the houses he imagined because none of them seemed to fit Ace's style. His curiosity piqued as he was led through a vast garden, and then a car stopped before him. Jim was also confused. "Where are we going again?" He had to ask. Weren't they already standing before the mansion earlier? Not only did the bodyguards take them around the mansion, b

  • ASHES OF INNOCENCE   CHAPTER 20: STOPPED?

The car stopped in front of Ace's mansion, and several men surrounded Jim's car. Both Jim and Brewster were taken aback. Brewster's face even turned pale from fright as he watched the bulky men standing frigidly around their car. Jim formed a fist and cursed lowly. "Is Ace playing with us? What the hell is he doing?!" He felt like he was about to lose his mind. Brewster shook his head. "Ace doesn't know about this." He mumbled. There was no way Ace would make things difficult for him after telling him to come over. He had even sent a message to Ace before they got there!Jim glanced at Brewster through the corner of his eyes and sighed deeply. His heart ached. He couldn't help but wonder how Brewster would live with a dangerous snake like Ace. Would the young man survive?Jim felt lost. However, Brewster couldn't stop the trembling of his lips, but he firmly believed Ace wouldn't hurt him. So, his sweaty fingers reached the door, and he opened it without a word. Jim's eyes wide

Brewster's eyes widened. He shook his head with a frantic expression on his face. "No, brother Jimmy. Why would you think of that?!" Even he was greatly shocked. Jim still couldn't believe it. "You don't love him?" He had to confirm again. Brewster shook his head. "I don't. Why would I love Ace? Wouldn't that make me a masochist?" He asked with a bewildered look. Jim finally let out a deep breath but he was still bothered. "Then, why do you want to live with him?" He lowered his voice and asked. It was as if he was scared of someone overhearing their words and using them against them. Brewster's heart skipped a beat. Indeed, why was he so keen on living with Ace?He remembered how, despite his worries concerning Jim's matter through the night, the excitement of living with Ace still came through, even though it was continuously drowned out by his concern about Jim's matter. However, even if it was like this, Brewster was certain he wasn't in love with Ace. No way that could happe

Brewster wiped his mouth and patted his belly lazily. "Thanks, bro Jimmy." He appreciated. Jim laughed awkwardly and waved his hand. "I've promised you that I'd cover your meals whenever I can. You call me brother, so give me the chance to act like one." Brewster flashed an innocent smile and blinked. "Yes. Brother Jimmy is the best." He stood up and walked toward the bed. "Today is the first day of acting, right?" He asked. Jim nodded. "Director William called earlier. You don't have a scene throughout this week. You can rest at home and go over next week." He explained. Brewster raised a brow, and his heart slightly flushed. "Then, I can pack today." He initially thought he would have to wait until the drama production was over before he could pack his things to Ace's house, but listening to Jim's explanation, he felt relieved in his heart. "Um." Jim nodded, then his eyes widened. "Pack? Pack to where?" He sounded confused. Brewster pursed his lips, and embarrassment flashed

  • ASHES OF INNOCENCE   CHAPTER 17: RESTLESSNESS

Morning came, but Brewster continued turning and rolling in bed. He couldn't catch a wisp of sleep all through the night. The call kept ringing in his head. The conversation with the deep-voiced man scared him more than he'd love to admit. He could tell Jim was in danger. But how could he help? What if the man was much more powerful than Ace? Would Ace still help him then?Brewster groaned painfully. His thoughts were chaotic. He scrambled for his phone with his hand, his eyes closed from exhaustion, and his fingers caught hold of the old phone. He pulled the phone closer to himself and forced his eyes open. "No call." He mumbled to himself. He had hoped Jim would call. He hadn't said anything to Jim during the call, but he desperately hoped all through the night that Jim would call and give him an explanation. While he did not want to confront Jim, he also couldn't let it go. He felt troubled. His temples pulsed. He closed his eyes weakly and hissed, but the sudden knock fr

  • ASHES OF INNOCENCE   CHAPTER 16: TROUBLE?

Brewster stepped out of the office still in a daze. He walked forward with a silly expression on his face, but his nails wouldn't stop piercing his palm. "Live in his home." He mumbled. His lips slowly curled up, and his ears turned beet red. He hastened his steps and clutched his chest to steady his rapidly beating heart. His head tilted, and his expression turned a little serious. "I might have to see a doctor soon. My heart is beating too fast these days." He complained. He rummaged in his pocket and brought out his phone. "Brother Jimmy..." He called softly as he dialed the line on his screen. The phone rang for a while and ended unanswered. Brewster frowned and called again, but the result was the same. "What's going on?" He mumbled worriedly. Jimmy was always with his phone. There was no way the man would ignore Brewster's call, especially after he dropped him at the hotel before he left. Brewster knew Jim would have been deadly worried and would have stayed alert with h
