Chapter 3

Author: Ocean Cloud
I had been working with The Silk Canopy for a long time. I knew the people working there very well.

“Mr. Grant, please don’t joke around. These are all your company’s expenses. How could your company not have anything to do with these?”

I couldn’t be bothered to argue with Pierre. “Retrieve the surveillance footage.”

Pierre did so at once, retrieving all the relevant surveillance footage based on the specific date and time of the expenses.

After I watched the footage, I couldn’t help but feel flabbergasted and furious.

In the footage, I saw Toby gathering a huge group of people. He booked the largest private room, which had a minimum spending of 3,000 dollars.

I saw Toby raise a wine glass up high with a smug look on his face.

Pierre pointed at Toby’s face on the screen and remarked, “Mr. Grant, see this? He’s your uncle, isn’t he?”

“He’s not any relative of mine. He’s my driver.”

This time, it was Pierre’s turn to be flabbergasted. Shock colored on his face as he exclaimed, “I seriously hope you’re not pulling my leg. I often see him with you when you come here for meals, and you two look quite close. You always call him Uncle Wagner.”

“His last name is Wagner. What about mine?”

A few seconds later, Pierre slapped his forehead hard. “Damn it! I’ve been careless. But he always comes here under your name, saying that you made arrangements to host clients here.”

“I always entertain my own clients in person,” I clarified.

Pierre started feeling anxious. “Now that you mentioned it, you’re right. Good god! What about the remaining expenses, Mr. Grant?”

“Don’t panic. Let’s continue watching,” I said, trying to calm Pierre down first.

We continued playing the footage.

“Dad, you’re doing so well now!”

“Uncle, this job of yours is amazing! You can enjoy a meal anytime at such a high-class restaurant. Look at this lobster! I’ve only seen something like this on TV.”

“Darling, you’ve got to learn from your uncle. Otherwise, we’ll never be able to afford this lobster in our entire lifetimes.”

A smug look appeared on Toby’s face when he was praised.

He raised his glass and said, “Let me tell you, this bottle of wine alone costs 2,000 dollars. Each gulp you take costs a few hundred dollars. But don’t worry, we have enough of this to go around. My boss is an idiot who listens to my every word.

“If he’s the king of his company, I’m the king emeritus. He has to address me as Uncle Wagner in front of others.”

“Toby, you’re simply amazing! I heard that his company’s employee benefits are pretty good. Can you get my son Matthias a managerial position? The salary doesn’t need to be high, about 5,000 a month will do.”

“Don’t worry, that’s a piece of cake! A call from me will settle things.”

“Uncle Wagner, that car of yours looks pretty good. When can I take it for a spin? It looks like it costs a few tens of thousands of dollars.”

“A few tens of thousands? It costs 600,000 dollars! It’s a luxury car, mind you,” Toby said proudly with his chest puffed out.

He spoke as though he owned the car. He couldn’t hide the pride on his face.

Everyone gasped at the staggering figure.

“That's so expensive! Uncle Wagner, can I try driving it?”

“Of course. I have the key. Feel free to take it for a spin.”

“Do you need to inform your boss?”

“Rubbish! He’s as obedient as a child in front of me. It’s fine. This car is practically mine. Drive it all you want.”

“Uncle Wagner, you’re amazing!”

Surrounded by such an atmosphere, Toby was feeling beyond smug.

The judge struck his gavel and reminded Toby solemnly, “Silence. We look only at the evidence.”The evidence was clear, and Toby’s words couldn’t change the facts.Matthias was eventually sentenced to 15 years of imprisonment. His relatives were sentenced to five years’ imprisonment for participating in physical assault, destruction of private property, and coerced money transfer. They had to compensate me a total of 100,000 for damaging my car and causing me emotional distress.Matthias also had to compensate the woman for hitting her child down with my car.Toby’s wife collapsed in tears. After the verdict was handed down, Toby’s wife sold their house, but even that was not sufficient to compensate us.Toby’s wife pleaded as she sobbed, “Mr. Grant, I really don’t have the money. Can I slowly return the outstanding amount to you? Otherwise, I can only pay you back with my life!”I didn’t want that, so I agreed to her request.Soon after, I heard that she tried borrowing money

I shrugged my shoulders helplessly and said that my phone was smashed and I couldn’t transfer the money right away.Matthias picked up my smashed phone, but an idea quickly came to his mind. “Log into your account with my phone!”My heart leaped. I didn’t expect him to be this bold. But his suggestion gave me an even better idea.“Sure,” I agreed readily.I logged into my bank account using Matthias’s phone. When Matthias saw that my balance stood at one million dollars, his eyes widened in surprise. “Damn, you’re a seriously rich man!”His relatives leaned in closer to take a look.“I wouldn’t be able to earn this much money in my entire lifetime.”“Cut the crap and make him transfer the money right now!”They were all talking over each other.I did as they demanded and transferred 100,000 dollars to their respective bank accounts. The moment I completed the final transfer, the door to my ward was kicked open.A few policemen rushed in.My mom ran in anxiously and finall

That finally made Matthias leave with his relatives. My mom comforted the woman. “Don’t you worry. We’ll seek justice for you.”The woman wiped her tears away and said in between sobs, “The doctor said that my child might be in a vegetative state. There’s hope as long as he lives.”The woman eventually calmed down with my mom’s reassurances.I thought this was the end of it, and that Matthias and his relatives would stop.To my surprise, the very next day, Matthias started acting up again. The moment I woke up in the morning, I heard hurried footsteps outside the door. At the next second, someone kicked my ward door open.Matthias charged into my ward with his relatives in tow.“Matthias Wagner, what do you want now?” I snapped. He looked coldly at me. “What do you think? You caused my dad to be behind bars. You have to give us an explanation today no matter what!”Once again, I laughed out of sheer frustration over his outrageous and shameless actions.I haven’t asked him

When I woke up, I found myself lying on a hospital bed.My mom wiped her tears away, emotional to finally see me awake. “Hudson, you’re finally awake! Do you feel unwell anywhere?”I shook my head. “Sorry for making you worry, Mom.”Just then, someone knocked at the door.“Come in.”Two policemen walked in.“Mr. Grant, Toby Wagner insists on meeting you, saying that he wants a private settlement,” the policeman in front said with furrowed brows.I rejected him outright. “I won’t accept any private settlement. He can talk to my lawyer instead.”The moment I said so, Toby came barging into my ward with Matthias and a few of his relatives.“Hudson, we were indeed reckless with that accident today. We formally apologize to you.”He shot the rest of them a look.Matthias and his relatives then took turns to apologize to me. “I’m sorry!”I laughed. “If saying sorry was enough, there’d be no need for cops. If everyone were like you, thinking that saying sorry could resolve all p

Toby made an attempt to leave.I stopped them immediately. “Don’t you dare leave!”“Who do you think you are, trying to stop me?” Toby shoved me hard. I stumbled back and almost fell. Thankfully, a stranger held me steady just in time. Some people in the crowd couldn’t stand it any longer and chimed in, scolding Toby.Toby hit back in embarrassment, “So what if I killed someone in a crash? It’s not my car. If we were to pursue this matter, he is to be held accountable as well.”He pointed to me as he spoke.I was so mad I laughed out of sheer frustration. He drove my car without my permission and was now trying to push the blame to me?“Toby Wagner, leave those words to the police later!”I didn’t want to waste my breath on him.“Step aside!” Matthias took a step forward and glared at me.I refused to let them go.Matthias tried to attack me, but this time, I didn’t let him. I punched him so hard, I knocked a tooth out. He burst out into tears. “Dad! He knocked my tooth

Toby looked at me darkly, clearly displeased, and said, “Hudson, don’t you dare go overboard. You’re wasting public resources calling the police over something so trivial.”As it turned out, something like this was considered trivial to him.“You beast, give me back my child!”The woman charged at Toby, but he shoved her aside mercilessly.“Blame yourself for not being careful while crossing the road.“You don’t look rich anyway. Your child will only suffer with you. Might as well be dead and get reincarnated as a rich man’s son in his next life.“Come to think of it, I’ve practically done a good deed. Yet, you’re scolding me instead of thanking me.”Toby was all self-righteous as he went on justifying his actions.“You beast! Go to hell!” The woman grabbed Toby’s collar and yelled, “I’ll make you pay for my son’s life with your own!”“You witch! Let me go.”Toby glared at the woman and tried pushing her away a few times. When that failed, he slapped her. “Damn it, just my lu
