Chapter 2

Author: Ocean Cloud
“How could that be?” I exclaimed.

The Silk Canopy was a fairly upscale restaurant and was my go-to spot for entertaining clients and holding company events.

To make things convenient, I signed an agreement with The Silk Canopy. They would bill us once a month.

Over the years, I would keep my monthly expenditure at The Silk Canopy within 20,000 dollars and I seldom spent more than 30,000 dollars.

Out of nowhere, it hit 100,000 dollars.

I couldn’t quite wrap my head around it.

“Send me the bill.”

“Sure,” the finance manager said. I received the bill soon after.

I tallied it with my own records.

Each time I hosted a client, I would spend about 1,000 dollars. Sometimes, the figure might be higher but not more than 2,000 or 3,000 dollars. I couldn’t possibly have spent 100,000 dollars.

I checked through the line items on the bill. I had spent a total of 23,000 dollars on hosting eight clients and a few company events.

The other line items had nothing to do with me.

For example, there was an expense two days ago that stood at 10,000 dollars.

Last night, when I spent slightly over 1,000 dollars to host a client, there was another expense that stood at 5,000 dollars.

Aside from these random expenses, there were some accommodation expenses as well.

This restaurant offered accommodation as well. The room charges alone were about 10,000 dollars.

I was getting increasingly confused as doubts grew in my mind. I started getting frustrated.

I quickly forced myself to calm down.

I took a deep breath and said to the finance manager, “Don’t settle the bill. Let me make a trip to The Silk Canopy first.”

“Okay, Mr. Grant.”

After hanging up, I walked out of my room and saw that Lucy had prepared a glass of warm water.

After drinking some warm water, I asked, “Where is Toby?”

There was a subtle shift in the look on Lucy’s face. “He went out. He told me to tell you that he isn’t free to be your driver today, and that you should hail a taxi to go to your office.”

“Did he say what he was going to do?”

“No. I didn’t dare ask, either,” Lucy said.

I saw a tinge of fear in Lucy’s eyes.

I quickly called Toby, but the moment he answered, he drawled, “Hudson, I’m driving. Don’t call me.”

He hung up right after that.

I called him another three times, all of which he declined to answer almost immediately. When I called him for the fourth time, his voice finally came through the phone.

“Hudson, why are you being so insensible? I have something important to do, why do you keep calling me? Can’t you wait till I return? It’s a wonder how you manage such a huge company when you’re so hasty and impulsive.”

“Who are you calling Hudson? Call me Mr. Grant,” I said darkly. “Also, I’m officially informing you right now that you’ve been fired. Return my car to me right now.”

“What did you say? It’s too windy here, and I can’t hear you. Also, you’re still young and not very mature in the way you do things. You're overreacting over trivial matters. I’ll guide you on how to do things once I’m back, and teach you some important lessons about life.”

He hung up once more. When I tried calling him again, no one came to the phone anymore.

When I arrived at The Silk Canopy, I saw Pierre Charlton, the general manager of The Silk Canopy.

He even greeted me brightly, “Mr. Grant! Here to settle the bill in person?”

I placed the bill in front of Pierre.

“Look. Aside from the parts I underlined in red that had to do with our company expenses, none of the other line items has anything to do with our company,” I said gravely.

The judge struck his gavel and reminded Toby solemnly, “Silence. We look only at the evidence.”The evidence was clear, and Toby’s words couldn’t change the facts.Matthias was eventually sentenced to 15 years of imprisonment. His relatives were sentenced to five years’ imprisonment for participating in physical assault, destruction of private property, and coerced money transfer. They had to compensate me a total of 100,000 for damaging my car and causing me emotional distress.Matthias also had to compensate the woman for hitting her child down with my car.Toby’s wife collapsed in tears. After the verdict was handed down, Toby’s wife sold their house, but even that was not sufficient to compensate us.Toby’s wife pleaded as she sobbed, “Mr. Grant, I really don’t have the money. Can I slowly return the outstanding amount to you? Otherwise, I can only pay you back with my life!”I didn’t want that, so I agreed to her request.Soon after, I heard that she tried borrowing money

I shrugged my shoulders helplessly and said that my phone was smashed and I couldn’t transfer the money right away.Matthias picked up my smashed phone, but an idea quickly came to his mind. “Log into your account with my phone!”My heart leaped. I didn’t expect him to be this bold. But his suggestion gave me an even better idea.“Sure,” I agreed readily.I logged into my bank account using Matthias’s phone. When Matthias saw that my balance stood at one million dollars, his eyes widened in surprise. “Damn, you’re a seriously rich man!”His relatives leaned in closer to take a look.“I wouldn’t be able to earn this much money in my entire lifetime.”“Cut the crap and make him transfer the money right now!”They were all talking over each other.I did as they demanded and transferred 100,000 dollars to their respective bank accounts. The moment I completed the final transfer, the door to my ward was kicked open.A few policemen rushed in.My mom ran in anxiously and finall

That finally made Matthias leave with his relatives. My mom comforted the woman. “Don’t you worry. We’ll seek justice for you.”The woman wiped her tears away and said in between sobs, “The doctor said that my child might be in a vegetative state. There’s hope as long as he lives.”The woman eventually calmed down with my mom’s reassurances.I thought this was the end of it, and that Matthias and his relatives would stop.To my surprise, the very next day, Matthias started acting up again. The moment I woke up in the morning, I heard hurried footsteps outside the door. At the next second, someone kicked my ward door open.Matthias charged into my ward with his relatives in tow.“Matthias Wagner, what do you want now?” I snapped. He looked coldly at me. “What do you think? You caused my dad to be behind bars. You have to give us an explanation today no matter what!”Once again, I laughed out of sheer frustration over his outrageous and shameless actions.I haven’t asked him

When I woke up, I found myself lying on a hospital bed.My mom wiped her tears away, emotional to finally see me awake. “Hudson, you’re finally awake! Do you feel unwell anywhere?”I shook my head. “Sorry for making you worry, Mom.”Just then, someone knocked at the door.“Come in.”Two policemen walked in.“Mr. Grant, Toby Wagner insists on meeting you, saying that he wants a private settlement,” the policeman in front said with furrowed brows.I rejected him outright. “I won’t accept any private settlement. He can talk to my lawyer instead.”The moment I said so, Toby came barging into my ward with Matthias and a few of his relatives.“Hudson, we were indeed reckless with that accident today. We formally apologize to you.”He shot the rest of them a look.Matthias and his relatives then took turns to apologize to me. “I’m sorry!”I laughed. “If saying sorry was enough, there’d be no need for cops. If everyone were like you, thinking that saying sorry could resolve all p

Toby made an attempt to leave.I stopped them immediately. “Don’t you dare leave!”“Who do you think you are, trying to stop me?” Toby shoved me hard. I stumbled back and almost fell. Thankfully, a stranger held me steady just in time. Some people in the crowd couldn’t stand it any longer and chimed in, scolding Toby.Toby hit back in embarrassment, “So what if I killed someone in a crash? It’s not my car. If we were to pursue this matter, he is to be held accountable as well.”He pointed to me as he spoke.I was so mad I laughed out of sheer frustration. He drove my car without my permission and was now trying to push the blame to me?“Toby Wagner, leave those words to the police later!”I didn’t want to waste my breath on him.“Step aside!” Matthias took a step forward and glared at me.I refused to let them go.Matthias tried to attack me, but this time, I didn’t let him. I punched him so hard, I knocked a tooth out. He burst out into tears. “Dad! He knocked my tooth

Toby looked at me darkly, clearly displeased, and said, “Hudson, don’t you dare go overboard. You’re wasting public resources calling the police over something so trivial.”As it turned out, something like this was considered trivial to him.“You beast, give me back my child!”The woman charged at Toby, but he shoved her aside mercilessly.“Blame yourself for not being careful while crossing the road.“You don’t look rich anyway. Your child will only suffer with you. Might as well be dead and get reincarnated as a rich man’s son in his next life.“Come to think of it, I’ve practically done a good deed. Yet, you’re scolding me instead of thanking me.”Toby was all self-righteous as he went on justifying his actions.“You beast! Go to hell!” The woman grabbed Toby’s collar and yelled, “I’ll make you pay for my son’s life with your own!”“You witch! Let me go.”Toby glared at the woman and tried pushing her away a few times. When that failed, he slapped her. “Damn it, just my lu
