Chapter 2

Author: Silk & Feathers
A few students who happened to pass by looked over.

Everyone knew I was the most useless alchemy student in Crucible.

They also knew Zephyr, the extraordinarily gifted newcomer.

I smiled faintly and said, “Fair point. If that’s the case, then we ought to abide by Crucible’s ordinances.

“Since you just got here, you should show me some respect.”

“You—!”

Zephyr’s expression darkened.

“What’s the matter?” I asked, tilting my head.

“Didn’t you say the only things that matter are talent and hard work? Or do you think your own rules matter more than earning your place here?”

The students who had been standing around watching the argument noticed what I had done.

Zephyr gritted his teeth and forcibly suppressed his anger. “Fine, you’ve got a point! But let me be straight with you. Once I enter the order, I only acknowledge strength.

“Those lazy ones who sit around doing nothing all day don’t deserve anyone’s respect, no matter how old they are!”

With that, he turned and walked away huffily.

I watched him leave as hatred surged in me.

This time around, I would not conceal anything.

From that day on, the story of my feud with Zephyr spread rapidly throughout the entire Crucible.

The other students whispered among themselves.

Some said I was deliberately making things difficult for Zephyr because Caspian and my other peers favored me. Others said Zephyr was simply too arrogant.

I could not be bothered with such idle gossip. So, I hid myself away in my room, passing the days reading alchemy texts and basking in the sun.

But I knew Zephyr would not let things go so easily.

Lately, I had been exploring the Arch-Alchemist Dimension within my mind.

Inside, there were herb fields thick with energy. There were also the alchemical writings of the First Alchemist, along with countless lost elixir recipes.

One day, as I was studying a lost antidote pill formula inside the dimension, I heard footsteps outside my courtyard.

I exited the dimension and pretended to be studying.

Ella came in.

She carried a plate of fruits and asked in a conflicted tone, “Carlton, have you and that new arrival Zephyr really been fighting?”

I shook my head and said, “There’s no bad blood between us. Zephyr’s totally devoted to his alchemy. So, he looks down on someone as untalented as me.”

She sighed. “Carlton, don’t be so stubborn. The Arch-Alchemist’s election is coming up soon. You need to concentrate and learn a thing or two from him.”

Just as she said that, Melissa walked in. “Mr. Hemlock is in solitary retreat right now, so don’t be so hardheaded.”

Helena emerged and quickly chimed in, “Yeah, Carlton, Zephyr’s really talented. I watched him craft pills yesterday. His technique was fast and precise!”

Another of my peers, Marie Amber, also came in and nodded.

“These past few days, Zephyr has been prodding us about crafting pills. My skills have actually improved quite a bit!”

When I heard this, I looked at them with a cold gaze.

In just a few short days, Zephyr had won over several of my female peers.

I stopped smiling and said in a chilling tone, “So to you, I was in the wrong to go against him, right?”

Melissa frowned. “Nobody’s saying you were wrong. We just think you’re taking this too personally.

“That’s just how he is. He trains hard and doesn’t really show respect through words or gestures. You should stop slacking off too and try to be more like him—”

“No need!” I cut her off. “Whether I train or not is my call. I don’t need you worrying about it.”

Helena was displeased. “Carlton, how did you become so stubborn? With your lazy, half-hearted attitude, you don’t deserve to stay in Crucible at all!”

Looking at how disappointed she was, I could not help but sneer. “Since you all feel that way, you can show yourselves out.”

They were stunned for a moment. They clearly had not expected me to say such a thing.

“Carlton, you’ve got some nerve talking like that!” Melissa’s face turned ashen. “You need to apologize to everyone.”

I did not make a scene. First, I took several herbs out of the Arch-Alchemist Dimension and crafted a batch of antidote pills, which I distributed to the locals. After taking the antidote pills, the patients’ symptoms quickly eased.I stayed in Willow Creek for three days until every last patient had recovered. Then, I prepared to leave. Before leaving, I took a pack of antidote herb seeds out of the Arch-Alchemist Dimension and handed them to the mayor, Arthur Smith. “Sir, plant these at the front of the town. If the plague ever comes through again, these antidote herbs will soak up the poison on their own.”Arthur accepted the seeds with both hands and thanked me profusely.I smiled, swung myself onto my horse, and continued on my way.My reputation gradually spread.People said I could make a colorful flower bloom with a casual point of my finger. They said I could bring the dead back to life and grow flesh on bare bones. Some called me the “Verdant Healer.” Others calle

Time passed in the blink of an eye.Caspian visited my courtyard. “Carlton, have you thought this through?”I stood in the courtyard, gazing at the mountain in the distance, and gave a gentle nod.“Mr. Hemlock, I have. I’m not staying at Crucible.”He was silent for a moment. Then, he asked, “Is this about Melissa and her friends?”I shook my head. “Not entirely. I’m The First Alchemist’s Legacy. In the past, I traveled the world. The entire world was my cauldron. All of nature was my ingredient. I healed the sick and saved lives.“I’m not giving that up.”He was silent for a long while, then finally let out a sigh. “You’re right. You are The First Alchemist’s Legacy. You were never meant to stay in a little town like this.”He took a worn leather tome from the fold of his robe and placed it in my hand.“These are the journals of Crucible’s Arch-Alchemists, passed down through the generations. They might come in handy on your travels.”I accepted the tome and nodded solemnl

Just then, a man in white emerged at the edge of the Miasma Woods. It was Caspian, fresh out of a solitary retreat. When he saw me lying there, nearly dead, his eyes filled with pure rage.“Who said you could lay a hand on him?!”Melissa shuddered violently and hastily withdrew her spell. Her legs gave out, and she dropped to her knees.“M-Mr. Hemlock, I…”He flicked his sleeve, and the poisonous mist dispersed instantly without a trace.Zephyr panicked, and he tried to play the victim. “Mr. Hemlock, you’ve misunderstood! Carlton’s been rubbing your favoritism in everyone’s face. He acts like he’s above us all. We only wanted him to reflect in the Miasma Woods for a few days!”Helena also mustered her courage and stepped forward. “Mr. Hemlock, you’ve been playing favorites with Carlton for years. “You even handed over the Arch-Alchemist Dimension, the order’s most treasured heirloom, like it was nothing!“The whole order is talking. Everyone’s whispering about what’s real

With a violent swing, Zephyr shoved me hard into the Miasma Woods.I closed my eyes and stayed calm. After all, I had come prepared. When I was pushed into the Miasma Woods, a cold, foul, stinking poison mist hit me in the face. Countless venomous snakes surged in from every direction, flicking their tongues and baring their sharp fangs.Zephyr stood at the edge of the Miasma Woods, watching the scene without blinking as he smiled smugly. But his smile soon froze on his face. “What… What’s going on?! Why won’t those snakes go near him?!”The venomous snakes that had been ready to strike were all cowering at the side. They did not even dare to come close to me.The poison mist scattered on its own before it could get within three inches of me, as if it had sensed a natural predator.Melissa stared fixedly at the faint green glow rising around me. She said in a trembling voice, “I-It’s the aura of the Arch-Alchemist Dimension! Whoever has it is immune to every poison and com

Several of my female peers stood off to the side with conflicted faces. Yet not a single one of them stepped forward to stop him. Melissa was about to speak up, but in the end, she turned away and said, “Carlton, Zephyr’s only doing this for your own good.”“For my own good?” I scoffed. “Crippling me and dumping me into the Miasma Woods to feed the snakes is for my own good?”Zephyr looked down at me and said, “It’s only because you hogged Crucible’s best resources while coasting through every single day!“You don’t deserve to stay in this order at all!”In the end, they dragged me to the Miasma Woods behind the mountain.A cold, foul breeze hit me in the face, yet I stayed calm.“Zephyr, there’s no bad blood between us. So, why are you so dead set on killing me?”He leaned in and whispered, “No bad blood? Carlton, you’re too naive. In the past, you died, and that was the end of it. But your soft-hearted teacher strangled me to death right there in the main hall!”I looked at

Someone in the crowd let out a shocked cry.Zephyr’s face instantly turned ashen. “You… How did you—?”I smiled and casually brushed the dirt off my robe. “I already told you. The true First Alchemist’s Legacy doesn’t need a cauldron. Every last blade of grass in Crucible is my pill.”With that, I turned and walked away, leaving behind a courtyard full of dumbstruck students. After the tournament ended, I returned to my room. The moment I pushed open the door, I saw several of my female peers standing in the yard, looking at me with complicated faces.Melissa hesitated before she asked me, “Carlton, how did you manage to perform the Art of Verdant Revival?”I looked at her calmly. “That’s a secret. I’d rather not say.”Melissa’s expression stiffened. She wanted to say more, but Helena pulled her back.Helena let out a cold snort. “Forget it, Melissa! Now that he’s got real skills, he thinks he’s too good for us.”I did not argue. I turned, walked into my room, and shut the d
