Lane Conlay stood quietly by the window of her bedchambers, watching the afternoon sun cast long shadows over the Blackwood pack lands. The room was mostly stripped of its warmth; Maya had already packed the finest silver and the ledger books into the hidden compartments of their travel trunks. All that was left was to wait for the royal decree to arrive.

Lane certainly did not expect that as soon as she got back from the Capital, the peace would be shattered.

The heavy oak doors were not just opened—they were violently slammed against the stone wall. Alpha Ethan Blackwood stormed into the room, a tempest of dark Alpha aura rolling off his shoulders. His face was flushed with irritation, his jaw clenched so tightly the muscles jumped.

He didn't stop until he was looming directly over Lane, his gray-brown eyes flashing with a dangerous, warning heat.

"What were you doing at the Alpha King's palace, Lane?" Ethan demanded, his voice dropping into a low, threatening growl that vibrated through the floorboards.

Lane didn't flinch. She turned slowly from the window, her expression perfectly smooth, looking at him as if he were nothing more than an uninvited guest.

Before she could answer, Ethan took a step closer, pointing a harsh finger at her. "Let me make one thing completely clear to you right now. If you went to the Capital to beg the Alpha King to cancel my marriage to Maris, you are going to regret it. I am the Alpha of this pack, and my decisions are final. No amount of petty tears or royal pleading is going to change that."

Lane looked at his raised finger, then up into his furious face. She let out a soft, completely calm breath. "I didn't do that, Ethan."

"You better not have," Ethan scoffed, his chest heaving as he crossed his arms tightly. He looked around the room, completely missing the fact that her jewelry boxes were entirely empty. "You better behave yourself from now on, Lane. My wedding to Maris is in exactly three weeks. The entire northern alliance is watching us. I am bringing glory to the Blackwood name, and I absolutely will not tolerate any distractions, petty jealousy, or commotions from you."

"I told you before," Lane said, her voice a chillingly level contrast to his roaring temper. "I won't interfere with your wedding. I won't interfere with anything at all."

Ethan narrowed his eyes, searching her calm face for any sign of deception. Seeing nothing but an eerie, cold compliance, he let out a sharp, mocking breath. He thought he had successfully broken her pride. He thought his threats had finally forced his "weak, dependent" fated mate to accept her reality.

"Good," Ethan said coldly, turning his back to her and walking toward the door. He paused at the threshold, looking over his shoulder one last time to deliver a final, cruel blow. "Because let me remind you—I am keeping you here out of charity and the promise I made to your dead mother. If you try anything, if you make a single scene during the ceremony or embarrass me in front of Maris, I will strip you of your title and throw you out of this pack myself. Let’s see how long a fragile Omega survives in the wild without my name protecting her."

With that final threat, Ethan stepped out into the corridor and slammed the door shut behind him.

For a long moment, the bedroom was entirely silent.

Maya, who had been standing frozen in the corner of the room during the entire encounter, was shaking. Her hands were clenched into tight fists, her knuckles turning completely white. The sheer, unadulterated disrespect from a man who had fed off Lane’s wealth for a year was too much to bear.

Maya turned to Lane, her voice cracking with a mixture of tears and absolute fury. "Milady! Why do you let him disrespect you like that? Why do you just stand there and let him speak to you as if you are a beggar living off his scraps?"

Before Lane could answer, the dam broke inside the loyal maid. Maya’s Silvermoon pride—the pride of a warrior pack that had never bowed to anyone—completely took over.

Maya whirled around, marched straight to the heavy doors, and flung them open. She stepped out into the corridor, looking down the hall where Ethan’s heavy boots were still echoing against the stone.

"Alpha Ethan!" Maya screamed at the top of her lungs, her voice echoing violently through the entire eastern wing of the castle.

Ethan stopped in his tracks, turning around with a look of lethal, dark fury on his face, shocked that a mere maid would dare raise her voice to him.

But Maya didn't back down. She pointed back toward Lane's room, her face flushed with righteous anger as she shouted for the entire packhouse to hear:

"You don't know who she is! You think she is a weak, broken creature depending on your charity? She is a pure-blooded Alpha! She holds the bloodline of the legendary generals who built the North! And yet you are looking down upon her like she is nothing! You are blind, Ethan Blackwood! You are completely blind!"

"Maya, enough," Lane’s voice cut through the corridor, quiet but laced with an absolute, undeniable command that instantly made Maya freeze.

Ethan stared down the hallway at them, his eyes wide with a mix of shock and mockery. He let out a loud, arrogant laugh, shaking his head as he turned back around. "Keep dreaming, maid. A pack of dead heroes produces nothing but ghosts."

He walked away, completely unaware that the countdown to his own destruction had just reached its final days.

  • The First Luna    Chapter 18

**Alpha Ethan Blackwood’s POV** "Mother, that is enough!" Ethan snapped, his sharp voice cutting through Brenda’s vindictive sneering. A heavy, uncomfortable silence descended upon the council chamber. Ethan looked around the room, noting the tight jaws and downcast eyes of his senior elders. They were standing there, saying absolutely nothing, because deep down, they already felt a profound wave of guilt. They knew Brenda was maliciously twisting words to justify an ugly theft. Ethan rubbed his temples, a splitting headache forming behind his eyes. He hadn't wanted this to turn into a vulgar public execution. All he wanted was to get over with this quickly, dissolve the bond, and immediately prepare the ceremony to make Maris his official mate and Luna. As for Lane’s money... Ethan’s stomach twisted. He hadn't wanted to touch a single copper of her inheritance. But Maris's sharp warnings from the night before kept ringing in his ears. Maris had explicitly told him to secure the

  • The First Luna    Chapter 17

**Alpha Ethan Blackwood’s POV** The moment the final syllable of the rejection left his lips, it felt as though a physical blade had been driven into Ethan's chest and violently twisted. A profound, suffocating hollow opened up inside his soul, a sudden, terrifying emptiness that made his breath catch in his throat. It was as if a vital, irreplaceable piece of his very being had been ripped away. Trembling on one knee, he forced himself to look up, expecting to see Lane shattered, weeping, or looking at him with the desperation of a abandoned female. But all he saw was a wall of absolute ice. Lane stood before him, her expression completely smooth and entirely emotionless. There wasn't a single tear in her silver-tinted eyes. There wasn't a flicker of regret on her beautiful face. Seeing her utter indifference, a wave of bitter resentment washed through Ethan, helping him push down the agony in his chest. He quickly masked his pain, gritting his teeth as he forced himself back to

Lane stood perfectly still, her silver-tinted eyes shifting from the elders to rest directly on Brenda. The silence in the room stretched thin, suffocating and tense, until Lane finally spoke, her voice flat and cold. "And what of the assets I brought with me into this marriage?" Lane asked, her gaze piercing. "The dowry, the infrastructure investments, the personal vaults. What happens to them once the bond is broken?" Brenda let out a sharp, greedy laugh, leaning forward in her seat with a look of smug triumph. "What happens to them? The Blackwood Pack will be retaining seventy percent of your assets, of course! You came into our home, you disrupted our peace, and you practically tried to kill me by pulling my healer away. Consider it the rightful tax for the shelter and protection we wasted on you this past year!" "Seventy percent?!" Elder Raymond’s voice exploded through the chamber like a clap of thunder. He surged to his feet, his massive, ancient Alpha aura flaring so viole

  • The First Luna    Chapter 15

The air in the grand courtyard leading to the Elders’ Council chamber was unexpectedly calm, carrying the crisp, sweet scent of mountain pine and wild lilies. But the serenity did not deceive Lane. She walked with a steady, unhurried stride, her dark green gown sweeping the stone floor, until she rounded the final pillar near the entrance and caught sight of Ethan. He was standing near the heavy oak doors, completely absorbed in a small, crumpled piece of parchment in his hands. He was reading it under his breath, his voice catching in the quiet air: *"...make sure to take Lane's half of her money."* The words struck Lane with a sudden, silent sharpness. A cold ache bloomed in the center of her chest, and it would be a lie if she said she hadn't held even the slightest, most fragile shred of hope that a year of fated mating meant something to Ethan. To hear him standing outside a sacred council, actively calculating how to rob her on the orders of his mistress, finally turned that

  • The First Luna    Chapter 14

**Alpha Ethan Blackwood’s POV** The private war room of the Blackwood main estate was suffocatingly tense as Ethan stood before his immediate family and inner circle. He had gathered them to formally lay out the strategy for the following evening. "Tomorrow night, before the Elders' Council, I am formally dissolving the mate bond with Lane," Ethan announced, his voice echoing off the stone walls. He intentionally kept the part about banishment to himself. He had only threatened Lane with exile to scare her a little, to shake her out of her unyielding arrogance and force her to bring Doctor Jean back. Despite his burning anger, he wasn't a monster; he wasn't actually going to cast her out into the wild to be torn apart with no home to her name. He just needed her to be compliant again. Brenda leaned back in her chair, a smug, sickly sweet smile returning to her pale face. "Oh, Ethan, you are doing a magnificent job. That ungrateful girl has caused nothing but chaos and disrespect

  • The First Luna    Chapter 13

**Alpha Ethan Blackwood’s POV** His mother’s sudden collapse had thrown the entire estate into a panic, and the reality of their situation had crashed down on Ethan with terrifying speed. Because Doctor Jean had flatly refused to set foot on Blackwood land, Ethan had been forced to mount his swiftest stallion, ride desperately to the Royal Capital, and personally pull a high-ranking royal healer back to the territory. Now, Ethan stood anxiously at the foot of his mother's bed, watching the royal healer pack away his glowing instruments. Brenda lay pale and wheezing against her pillows, her breathing shallow and ragged. The healer straightened up, letting out a heavy, defeated sigh. "Alpha Ethan, I have tried everything within my power to stabilize her, but my treatments are only acting as a temporary shield. The only reason my medicines are having any effect at all is because Doctor Jean’s specialized prescriptions have been fortifying her system for the past year. Her lungs have
