My jaw ticked, my ears catching something faint in the distance. I didn't react, knowing our little mate would panic.

I moved before she noticed, uncapping the syringe and jabbed Dane's thigh, returning beside Xavier.

He rose a curious brow at me as I tossed the needle.

It'll control his rut. I mindlinked to him.

Xav smirked, amused. For how long?

A few hours, hopefully. My eyes fell to their waists, seeing the erection press against Rose's stomach, frowning slightly. It should have already started to work...

"Dane," I called softly, smirking at him as he dragged himself away from Rose to glare at me, her cheeks flushed and her chest heaving.

"It's late," I noted, tilting my chin to the covered window of the lounge that overlooked the mountain.

Dane scowled at me, his dark eyes burning with need, but finally, the sedative took hold and the green leeched through.

Xav grinned at Rose, seeing her confused expression as she looked across us, sensing somethi

I frowned heavily at the stack of 'items' placed haphazardly on the living room table. "This is it?" I asked in a gruff tone, eyeing the sparse personal things covered in my Rose's scent. Two t-shirts that looked like they were eighth-hand, worn, faded and torn across the seams. The pair of pants and shorts weren't any better. A strong breeze would have them in tatters. A hairbrush with the handle missing. And two books — the spines almost unreadable from wear, the pages soft and every one smelt like Rose had spent hours bend over them, touching each word as they pulled her out of her nightmarish reality and into fables of vampires and reanimated corpses - clutching them to her like a lifeline. If there's one thing I learned about my little Rose, it was she loved her books- and I knew there was three missing. "Yeah - she doesn't have much." Justine Stormbrooke rasped dismissively, her voice somewhere between a shrill and smokers cough at all times. She raised a h

Xavier I padded downstairs, rubbing the sleep from my eyes and followed Rose's scent back to the library. I know she got up around dawn, but I thought she was just going to the bathroom — it was nearly seven and the worry was building in my gut by the second. For a fleeting second, I considered she'd left. Tried to run away, not necessarily from us, but the whole situation. The thought evaporated the moment my amber eyes landed on the bundle in the corner, my heart plunging at the sight. Dane sat in one of the reading chairs, turned slightly to tuck himself into the corner and his head resting on the armrest. He was completely naked, his olive skin bruised, dirty and bloody, though smelling the air, I knew very little of it, if any, was his. And in his arms, curled with her nose buried in the cleanest part of his neck, Rose slept completely at peace. Her wild copper hair was a mess, her white nightgown tangled around her and covered in smudges and handprints from

Rose I tried to stay up, tried to wait for them to come home, even after Xavier's phone call. But, Theo wrapped me in his arms, curling me into his lap and covered us with blankets. He found an old hard drive with movies, finding a musical that was impossible for me not to enjoy, and after that, I'm not sure who fell asleep first. I woke up at some point, hearing a clatter downstairs that spooked me. Theo tightened his grip on my waist, mumbling into my shoulder. "It's just Xavier," he soothed. I wriggled free of his sleepy grasp, moving to the library door as the locks clicked and a soft voice echoed. "Unlock." I don't remember if the door opened all the way, or if Xav even stepped into the room. But, the moment I saw him, I was running. "You're okay!" I breathed, my arms barely wrapping his waist as I collided with him. His arms fell around me instantly, bending down to press firm kisses to the top of my head. "And you're awake," he clipped back, his vo

Dane I moved with murderous intent — even if there was a no-kill order on Jordan, the Triad needing more time to gather the evidence needed to bring him before Council, I still intended to break something. My fist collided with the first thing it could the moment we stepped foot off Triad property — one of the patrol vehicle's doors. I let out a frustrated roar, wrenching my hand out of the crumpled metal, the glass window raining down in shards that cut my skin further. It wasn't enough. I turned, intending to hit the back door next. Xav stepped in front of me, his hand catching my bloody and torn wrist and he glared at me. "Enough," he rumbled, low and quiet, his calm amber eyes taking me in with gentle consideration. "I don't want to have to explain to Rose why you've got your own blood on you." The thought stopped me instantly - the thought of the look on my sweet girl's face when she saw me covered in blood. The panic I'd cause. I relaxed, letting out a

Xavier I tapped my foot repetitively, my boot echoing sharply off the stone. I knew it was annoying as hell to the Wolven Guard who stood around the Council chambers, probably way worse to their sensitive hearing than mine — I just didn't give a shit. Dane was still fucking in there, talking to his father, the current Triad awake. I glanced up, the crescent moon glowing brightly, tilted in the sky above, and frowned. It was nearly one am. We'd been here for over an hour. Maybe two. Either way — I was getting impatient. I wanted to get back to Rose. Theo said she was okay, that she'd calmed down and asked to be woken when we got back. Fat chance of that happening, I wouldn't allow it. Our girl needed sleep. Even without the bonding fatigue, and now probably the flood of strength from Theo's marking; she still looked like she'd been through hell. Like she'd crawled herself out of the dirt one too many times and still tried to brush it off. But, I wouldn

  • The First Mate    Twenty Three

Rose Theo moved across the library, kicking the door closed with his ankle. "Lock." He called softly, the voice-activated system beeping and the sound of the mechanical locks slipping into place, reinforcing the door with it. I looked up, seeing he carried a tray of food in his hands, and a lopsided grin tilting his lips. "You okay, sweetie?" He whispered gently, kneeling beside me in the small concaved den, setting the tray in front of the small nest I'd made of blankets, pillows and books. I nodded, my eyes half-lidded and an old book clutched on my lap. I promised Dane I'd be waiting, and I intended to keep it — he and Xavier had risked their lives, more than once, for me tonight. It was the least I could do for bringing so much trouble already. "I just hope they're okay." I muttered, anxiety settling like a stone in my gut. "They're fine," he assured, his voice confident and airy, glancing at the large circular clock in one of the corners. He shrugged as
