Chapter 8: Chapter Eight: No Place to Run

Author: Shiqianluo
At the office, my colleague Sister Cynthia Gold and I went to copy the documents needed for the meeting. She has a very outgoing personality.

"Totally forgot to tell you, I ran into your brother and our 'Princess' when I was out for dinner with friends the other day," Cynthia Gold said as she unpacked the files, turning her head to me. "It seemed like it was her birthday, and our company only invited your brother."

"Princess" is the nickname of Florence Bobby.

Birthdays should be spent with important people, so she could only bring her best friend and boyfriend.

"Oh," I responded with a slight smile, pressing the start button, and the papers came out with a rustling sound from the other side.

"It was actually the first time I saw your brother drinking," Cynthia Gold said, showing a thoughtful expression, as if recalling something.

"What's up?" I asked.

Cynthia Gold shook her head, "When I was leaving to go to the restroom, I bumped into him again. He was staring at his phone, tapping away, as if he was sending a message. I said hello, but he didn't even hear me. He looked..."

She hesitated, making my heart race, and I involuntarily tilted my head, more focused on her.

"He looked really sad, like he had just gone through a breakup," Cynthia Gold finished, waving her hand. "I must have been mistaken. He doesn't even have a girlfriend. I haven't seen him look at anyone seriously in years, and he's always so busy, stuck in the office all day. Who would date him, right?"

Sometimes I think Sister Cynthia Gold is very perceptive, and other times, I feel she's quite oblivious to matters between men and women.

Or maybe I'm just too mature for my age.

Don't Stan Wallace and Florence Bobby look like a couple?

Because of what Cynthia Gold said, I couldn't help but scrutinize Stan Wallace closely after work.

Did they have a fight?

Noticing my odd behavior, Stan Wallace pursed his lips and squinted at me for a moment, then suddenly reached out and pushed my forehead. This time, it was different; when he pushed, he gently covered my eyes with his palm.

My eyelashes fluttered, feeling the resistance from his palm. Instinctively, I gripped my backpack tighter, and my breath caught for a second.

This time, he didn't tell me not to overthink things. He said nothing, but I understood his unspoken words. We both remained silent, understanding each other without a word.

"Brother," I called softly, unable to bear the warmth of his palm. When he moved his hand, I realized he wasn't looking at me, his head turned to one side, gazing at something unknown.

I followed his gaze, but saw nothing.

At the door of my apartment, I hung my helmet on his motorcycle.

"Brother, there's a black envelope under the mattress in my room. It contains a lot of letters. Could you get it for me?" I asked once his motorcycle was parked at the entrance of the community. "I need it for a class reunion tomorrow."

Stan Wallace paused slightly as he got off the bike, his brows furrowing and then relaxing, "Mm."

"Do you need anything else?" Stan Wallace asked, "I can bring it all together."

I shook my head, "No, nothing else."

Stan Wallace gave me a brief glance, "Mm."

He didn't ask about the class reunion, who I was meeting, or when. He was quieter than usual today.

After he dropped me off, Stan Wallace left. Since Florence Bobby's birthday, I hadn't seen them interact or go on any dates. They probably had a falling out.

I sensed something, but just as he didn't pry into my personal life, I felt I had no right to ask about his.

So, as we stood by the elevator, we remained silent, not saying goodbye for the first time.

The elevator doors closed slowly, and he left.

I stood there for a while, then, as usual, I ran to the living room window to watch him leave the community, riding his cool black motorcycle.

I sighed, ready to draw the curtains when a familiar figure appeared in my peripheral vision.

My hand trembled, and I took a step back, tripping and falling heavily to the floor.

I would never forget the silhouette of my stepfather, Randolph Wallace, and I would never mistake it.

He had found me.

Was neither fear nor a father's dignity enough to make a demon stop?

How could I make him let me go?

My hands shook uncontrollably. The sky outside the window seemed to darken instantly, and a hand reeking of smoke appeared, trying to penetrate the glass and trap me again.

I swallowed hard, quickly getting up to lock the security door and pull the curtains tightly shut. Only then did I dare to peek out at the green area below.

The community is fully enclosed, accessible only with a key fob. I had no idea how he got in.

Randolph Wallace looked anxious, constantly asking people questions and showing them his phone, then scanning the area after getting answers.

When his gaze lifted toward the building, I felt like he had already spotted me. There was nowhere to run, like a naked doll trapped in an arena, waiting for the cage to open and be torn apart.

Slowly covering the small gap in the curtain, the room fell into an unprecedented gloom, and my dream shattered.

For me, it was undoubtedly a memory that would be etched in my heart forever. However, due to Xiaoguiyuan's strong sense of boundaries, she never thought about what I looked like, nor did she ever ask for my name. Many years later, when I told this story to my grandmother, her face first showed disbelief, but soon, her wrinkled face was covered with tears."Really killed someone, and it was your own father, how could you still be alive?" My grandmother held my hand tightly, repeating, "You didn't want to kill him; you wanted to die with that beast! Silly child!""How could such an excellent and perceptive child have had such a terrifying thought?!" She gazed at me in fear through her tears, as if still in shock, "It was so close, just a little bit, and your whole life would have been ruined!"My grandmother was right. Without Gloria Kit, there would no longer be Stan Wallace in this world.Since it never happened, talking about it only causes unnecessary worry. If not for my gran

It was clear that 'Guiguan', no, Gloria Kit, wasn't a chatty person. She introduced her parents, her school, and shared some amusing anecdotes she had witnessed. She carefully chose cheerful topics, though it seemed a bit forced, but she was completely open. In just a few minutes, I had pretty much gathered all the information about her.Surprisingly, she lived in the same city as me, but on the opposite side, with no overlap in our daily routines. The middle school she attended was very famous, one of the best in Yantong.Perhaps she felt it was inappropriate to bring up her family in front of a dispirited teenager, so she chose her words carefully. I could feel how exhausting it was for her.But I could still tell that she came from a happy and prosperous family. Her father would occasionally take her and her mother on trips during holidays, often avoiding popular tourist spots and preferring quiet, secluded places. She said this was because her mother preferred tranquility.Whe

Quickly putting on the mask, when I reached out to pick up the bottle again, the brown liquid had already seeped into a small patch of snow in front of me.After several sleepless nights, wracking my brain for a solution, and then traveling eight hours, riding in an unheated tricycle around the entire village to find the only bottle of pesticide, it was all gone just like that. It's hard to describe the feeling at that moment—frustration, defeat, anger, unwillingness... fear...It felt like after waiting through a thousand days and nights for the college entrance exam, only to be stripped of the qualification to take it upon entering the examination hall. It felt like a life that had never been idle, suddenly rotting away in an instant.Just like me.A flood of negative emotions, which had worn me down to the point of exhaustion, surged up in my heart, so much so that I completely overlooked the tiny bit of... relief."Which eye of yours saw that I was going to drink it!"I jump

The injury on my leg was minor, but Stan Wallace insisted that I stay in the hospital for half a month. When we were at Nanquan Villa, he still knew how to make people laugh, but after coming back, he became less talkative, especially during the times of stitches and bandage changes, where he would be so fierce it seemed like he was about to bite someone. When Stan Wallace was truly angry, it was hard to placate him, but recently, I found some joy in it, as it gave me more chances to kiss and hug him. This time, the police acted with unprecedented speed, partly due to media attention. Besides focusing on the case, they also paid attention to Stan Wallace and me.Trista Fowler and Wei Ming both suggested that Stan Wallace could use this incident to build his reputation, reclaiming everything he had lost because of Tang Guofeng from Tang Guofeng himself. However, Stan Wallace refused and even asked Trista Fowler and Wei Ming to help remove any trace of him and me from the event. Compar

When I caused trouble at Nanquan Manor, Stan Wallace agreed to do a free design for the owner to help cover for me.At that time, Stan Wallace was already a rising star in the design world. The manor owner originally had no plans to rebuild, but to capitalize on Stan Wallace's fame, he created this space.Since it was both a restaurant and a bar, Stan Wallace designed a wine cellar underground.Only a few employees and the manor owner himself knew about this, as the manor was positioned as high-end. The value of the wines the owner stocked even exceeded the lifetime salaries of white-collar workers in first-tier cities, all for security reasons.Apart from planning the evacuation and return routes with the police, Stan Wallace spent most of his time here.Once the manor owner learned that Stan Wallace was working with the police to conduct a major operation on his property, those valuable wines were completely moved out and carelessly piled up in various corners of the manor. Now
