“Are you crazy?” Stella asked after closing the door behind her. She had been watching Damon until he got out of ears’ reach. I was guessing she had listened to our conversation. Seeing Damon here was one thing, and another was him asking me to be a surrogate. But it was too good a deal to let go. My people would be free. After years of being slaves to the Blue Valley pack, they had the chance to be welcomed as pack members. As the daughter of the Alpha, it was my job to ensure that this became a reality. And I was ready to do anything to see that come into fruition. “Keep your voice down, Stella. He might still hear us,” I said calmly. Stella ran her fingers through his hair in frustration. She was pacing the room, the wooden floor creaking beneath her feet with each step she took. Damon’s last words echoed in my ears now. “Meet me at my secret cave tomorrow night.” We were going to mate there. There was no doubt about it. The thought of having Damon above me—his tall, dominating figure left me feeling cozy. His warmth against mine and his breath on my face. My body shivered in excitement. Even after everything he had done it to me—rejecting me and marrying his girlfriend, Sophie. I still wanted him. He was my mate after all. “Anna. You aren’t thinking of going, are you?” Stella asked. She stopped pacing and was staring at me now, her eyes burning with rage. “Stella. This is the chance to save my people,” I replied. “Don’t you see? I don’t have any other choice. I can use him to get what I want. As long as I am his surrogate, I can get whatever I want. And I can get him back too.” “Anna. You need to move on! He rejected you,” she pointed out. “And you think a baby is going to make him change his mind?” I clenched my jaws. She was right. And I hated it. I wasn’t sure that Damon would still take me back. Part of me still wanted him. I was hoping, praying that he would change his mind and realize that marrying Sophie was a mistake. But the other part of me knew that it wasn’t going to happen. Why? Because he loved Sophie more than he would ever love me. “I will carry his baby. And that’s it,” I said. “And he won’t hurt that baby or my people. Because the blood of my people will also be running in the child’s veins.” Stella shook her head and asked off. She had enough. There was no talking me out of this. I was going to do this. Because it was not just for me. The sound of a knock on the door snapped me out of my thoughts. My heart skipped a beat as the thought of Damon coming back to tell me he had heard our discussion struck my mind. I would be petrified if that happened. I swung the door open before the knock came again and was surprised by who was standing before me. “N—Noami?” I stuttered in surprise. Noami stood before me with a basket of fruits and a warm smile on her face. Her skin crinkled at the edge of her eyes as the smile brightened the gloomy situation hovering around. She was the last person I expected to see here right now. “Hello, Anna. Do you mind if I come in?” She asked. I was frozen to the door but I quickly moved my body and nodded. She flashed another smile and walked into the house. I closed the door behind her and turned around to find her staring at the little living room. “Nice place you got here,” she said. I scratched my neck nervously before answering. “It’s not mine. I’m just squatting with my friend, Stella,” I replied. “The pack would never let a slave own a property on this land.” Noami flinched before giving me a crooked smile. That was the rule here. “Well, I know you’ve been having a hard time,” she said. “So I brought you this to cheer you up.” She handed me the basket of fruits and forced a smile as I got the basket from her. “Thank you, Noami. I don’t mean to sound ungrateful, but why are you doing this?” I asked. Noami’s smile faded. She walked closer to me and held my shoulder. “I was on my way here when I saw Damon leaving the house,” she said. “I know it’s hard being rejected. I would never understand the pain you are feeling. But I am here to tell you that you aren’t alone.” There was a rustling noise behind Noami and I raised my head to find Stella’s head poking out the kitchen. She was eavesdropping. When our eyes met, she gave me a cheeky grin. “Thank you, Naomi. I’m fine,” I said. Naomi sighed and her hand slipped off my shoulder. “Whatever’s on your mind, you should do it,” she said before walking past me. I stared at the basket of fruits in my hand thinking of her words. She was right. Did this mean that she had overheard my conversation with Stella? My brows furrowed and I turned around. She was opening the door. “Goodbye, Anna,” she said, turning to me with a warm smile. I gave her a simple nod. “And you too, Stella,” she said, not looking back. And with that, she left. I sighed and stared at the basket in my hand one more time. Whatever I wanted to do. That summed it up for me. I had made my decision. *** The songs of the crickets filled the night air as I walked timidly through the darkness. The full moon’s silver light bathed my surroundings, its light serving as a tour guide. My heart was racing, the cave not too far away from where I was. I was going to do it. Nothing was going to change my mind. I arrived at the cave, the entrance dark as a wormhole. I halted at the entrance, second thoughts swimming in my head. There was no turning back from this. Before I could turn back, the sound of footsteps echoing made me freeze in fear. A few seconds later, a figure emanated from the darkness. It was Damon, he was shirtless and his naked torso shone in the silver light. His eyes were on me, a feeling of relief in them. His next words were more gentle than I expected. They were compelling. “You want to come inside?”RohanFive years ago. I was running as fast as I could. But it seemed I was so slow. The pack house was under attack. The last line of defence had been broken. I knew that Jarred wouldn’t call me unless it was an emergency, and this was sooner than I hoped it would be. How long had we been at it? An hour? Maybe two or three? I couldn’t tell. All I needed to do was make it to the pack house. And I hoped that I wouldn’t be too late. Late. That was all I’ve been tonight. First, it was alerting the pack about the attack, and then it was Walton. My heart ached as I thought about him. How could I have been so stupid? The only reason he was dead was that I’d forced him to go after the vampires. I’d taken the fear from him and that had led to his death. This was all my fault. He’d died a painful death, and I feared that I wouldn’t be able to recover from it. As I got back into the pack, I could see the path being littered with vampires. They’d done a good job holding them back. The road
DamonThey were coming. But we were prepared. I could see them now—the vicious creatures coming at top speed, their screeching sounds filling the air. My hand tightened around the handle of the silver blade. This was going to be one hell of a fight. All around us, the people of the Black Fang roared in preparation. They were all ready for this. Everybody was ready except for one person—Rohan. It was amusing that he was about to chicken out on us. And he was the only person who had experience fighting vampires in large numbers like this. But now that we needed him the most, he was just a shell of himself. “On my word, we attack!” Dayton yelled at everybody. I gritted my teeth and tightened my grip on the blade again. I could feel my blood boiling. I was thirsty for a battle like this. A few months ago, I never knew that vampires were real. I’d lived my life totally oblivious to their existence. Until that morning at the cafe with my father. He’s opened my eyes to the reality of the
Anna“Good to see you back on your feet,” Rebekah said as she stood by the door. I was almost startled by that because nobody had seen her come in. It was evening, and Stella had fully recovered. It was time to go back home and get some rest. And nobody deserved it better than her.Stella chuckled as she rose from the bed. I was helping her, making sure that she was able to work. She’d been in bed all day which meant that her first few steps would be rocky. “Thank you, Rebekah,” she said softly. “I wouldn’t have been here without you.”Rebekah folded her arms as she leaned against the doorframe. “You seem to forget that’s my job, Stella.”Stella nodded with a smile on her face. “Yeah. It’s one hell of a job.”Stella moved, her hands slowly leaving the bed. Her legs touched the ground and she leaned off the bed gently. I watched her tentatively with her hand wrapped around my shoulder. Stella took a deep breath before standing on her feet. She chuckled in amazement and looked up at
RohanFive years ago. The air was tense, filled with the clink of swords, the metallic tang of blood, and the screams of my men as they clashed against the vampires. There was a fog that concealed half of the battlefield. It was our job to hold down the line. They must not get through. Not by any means.A vampire lunged at me faster than I could process. It brought me down to the ground and snapped its fangs at me. I moved my head away before it could take it off. And then I reached for my blade at my side and grabbed, swinging it at the vampire. Its head slid off and it dropped dead to my side. I got back to my feet immediately, making sure that it didn't repeat itself. I was Alpha. It was my job to protect this pack. And the only way I could do that was to protect myself. I couldn’t die on my people when they needed me most. “Alpha!” I heard a familiar voice scream through the field. I stared in the direction that the scream came from and it was the dirt blonde boy from earlier b
RohanPresent day. “Rohan! Rohan!” I could hear Damon’s voice calling me from the fog. I snapped back to reality and found him staring at me with his brows furrowed. “What the hell are you doing? Blacking out at an important time?” He asked, barely hiding the irritation in his voice. I sighed and rubbed my forehead. The memories were coming back faster, and I didn’t want to remember them. But if this was what was happening, then I had to make sure that I did better than last time. At the distance, Dayton was talking down the vampire while the whole pack watched. He tore off its neck from the body before smashing it to pieces with his foot. That was grotesque. But I could see the rage in his eyes. He was fuming at the vampires which meant that he could handle the rest here. “Are there any more?” He asked the crowd that was gathered but nobody responded. He walked up to us afterwards, his hands stained with blood. “What do we do now?” He asked. “You have to prepare your pack fo
RohanFive years ago. “Alpha! Thank goodness,” Eric said as I stepped out of the truck. It was twilight and I could smell the tension in the air. We were running out of time. They would soon be here. I could feel it—the strange shift in the air. We didn’t have much long left now. “What’s going on?” I asked and looked around. The men were gathered but they all looked scared. This pissed me off. “Why are you all looking like you’ve seen a ghost?”There was no answer. They all stared at me in silence, scared out of their minds. This irked me. At this rate, we wouldn’t be able to hold them back for long. “Well? Someone better answer me!” I demanded. “W—We didn’t know that vampires were real,” one of the men said. He was a boy of about nineteen with short dirt blonde hair. His blue eyes were lit in fright and his knees trembled as he held onto his blade. I bit my lips staring at him. He would be the first to die. “Well. Now you know that they are,” I said. “Now stop acting like wimps
