Chapter 2

작가: Clear Dreams
I didn't understand why Lucas frowned even more intensely.

Wasn't my obedient cooperation exactly what he had always wanted?

Layla froze as well. The tears she'd prepared to cry were trapped awkwardly in her eyes.

I bent down and personally fastened the Beast Dagger around her waist.

I then straightened my back and looked at Lucas.

"Now that everything has been given to Layla, I'll get going."

Without another word, I turned around and walked toward the cabin at the end of the pack territory.

I could feel a burning gaze following me all the way until the wooden door shut between us.

I knew it was Lucas, but I no longer cared.

Five years of obsession had finally become a thing of the past.

A strange feeling stirred deep within my mind.

The spiritual totem unique to the werewolf royalty lit up inside my consciousness.

It was a message from Dad.

[Diana, the royal guards will reach the edge of Misty Forest in three days. I'm coming to bring you home.]

Feeling that warm power resonate through my mind, I finally couldn't hold back my tears any longer.

The door suddenly swung open. Lucas barged in and said unhappily, "Why didn't you lose your temper with Layla back in the square? Diana, that's not like you."

His harsh gaze was fixed on my face before he suddenly froze.

"Diana, are you crying?"

There was even a hint of excitement in his voice.

He reached out, pinched my chin, and forced me to look up at him.

"You've never cried before. Are you afraid of losing me?"

I made no effort to correct his misunderstanding. Instead, I met his gaze calmly.

"Isn't this exactly what you wanted?

"Haven't you always told me to be more generous? Well, are you happy now?"

I had no idea what fantasy Lucas had constructed in his mind, but his eyes filled with emotion as he pulled me into his arms.

His embrace carried the familiar scent of pine mixed with the sickeningly sweet pheromones that belonged to Layla.

The two scents together made me nauseous.

Lucas lowered his head. He brushed his warm lips against my ear.

"Diana, you know I love you.

"But Layla's parents died saving me during the beast waves. I have to give her the status of Luna. She deserves to become the most honored shewolf in the pack.

"I know you've suffered today, but I promise you, as long as you're obedient, you'll still be the shewolf who stays by my side the longest.

"The pack will continue to respect you."

He was throwing me scraps.

He wanted me to feel grateful and willingly become his subordinate.

He actually believed those words should move me.

Just as I was about to shove him away, unable to stomach any more of his self-righteous affection, we heard rapid knocks on the door.

Layla's delicate voice came from outside.

"Lucas, I'm sorry to interrupt you and Diana.

"But it's so dark in my room. I'm scared. Could you come stay with me?"

Lucas immediately released me and hurried toward the door.

Just as he was about to open it, he seemed to recall something and glanced back at me.

"Oh, right. Three days from now is Layla's birthday banquet. She needs a piece of jewelry worthy of the occasion.

"I recall you have a bracelet inlaid with black kyanite. You never dress up anyway, so give it to Layla."

I stared at him in disbelief.

He knew perfectly well that I had been wearing that bracelet the day I was found.

It was the only clue my amnesiac self had to find my family.

Lucas knew exactly how important that bracelet was to me.

Once, a young shewolf who relied on the fact that her dad was an elder had tried to force me to hand it over.

After learning what happened, Lucas expelled her entire family from the pack's central district.

Now, he was the one demanding that I give it to Layla.

I clenched my fists so tightly that my nails dug deep into my palms, yet I felt no pain.

Looking at Lucas' expression, it seemed like he truly believed this was for my own good. I slowly nodded.

"Okay."

  • The Forsaken Pendant   Chapter 11

In the early spring three months later, the snowline had receded to the very base of the Royal City walls. Many things had happened during those three months. One of the scouts Dad assigned to me reported that Layla had become a rogue. She was penniless and had a crippled leg.She had gone to find Lucas, but he refused to see her. With nothing left to lose, Layla used her knowledge of Mist Pack to steal everything of value from the pack before disappearing without a trace. Two weeks later, Dad left me a letter. He wrote in it that he owed Mom too much in this lifetime. They were going away to enjoy the rest of their lives together.I became the youngest Alpha Queen in the kingdom's history. Before the coronation ceremony, the newly crowned Alpha Queen was required to parade through Royal City so her people could see her.I was seated inside the ceremonial carriage. Suddenly, a ragged figure charged out from the crowd. It was Lucas. He had on filthy, tattered clothes and was cl

The day after the recognition ceremony, the royal family openly moved against Mist Pack. The pack's hunting grounds were completely sealed off. Its water supply was cut.The Alphas of neighboring packs, werewolves who had once called Lucas their friend, severed every tie with Mist Pack.In less than two weeks, every territory under Mist Pack's control was absorbed by the royal family. The once-proud Alpha, Lucas, was no more.As the heart of winter arrived, temperatures plunged to their lowest.I lived in the highest tower in Royal City. My windows overlooked the entire kingdom.Every morning, when I pushed open the window, I could see the distant snow-capped mountains emerging through the morning mist.Beneath the tower, I could also see him.Lucas had been standing there for seven consecutive days.My maid told me his stomach illness had become so severe that he was coughing up blood, but no healer dared treat him.Lucas himself seemed to have given up on living. He refuse

Lucas struggled desperately. He looked up at me. For the first time, there was a vulnerable and pleading look in his eyes."Diana. It's me, Lucas. Stop this nonsense. Come back with me, alright?"I'll send Layla away. I'll take the pendant back and return it to you. And your bracelet too. Yes, your bracelet. I'll have it repaired."I stood on the platform and looked down at him. That was the face of the werewolf I had loved for five years. He had once placed the Moonstone Pendant around my neck beneath the moonlight and sworn he would never betray me.Now, that face was pale, gaunt, and repulsive.Gasps echoed through the crowd.I heard one Alpha whisper to another, "That's Lucas from Mist Pack. I heard he drove away the mate who stayed by his side for five years just for his new lover.""Drove her away? Didn't you hear? That mate is actually–""Shhh. Stop talking. The Alpha King is coming."Dad descended the steps and stopped before Lucas.Without hesitation, he drew the

A month later, the largest arena in Royal City lit up.99 towers of flame ignited simultaneously. Each sent a pillar of silver-blue fire into the sky, turning the night sky as bright as day.The Alpha King had reserved the entire arena to hold a grand ceremony unlike any before to officially welcome home his long-lost daughter. The spectator stands were covered with luxurious silver fox pelts, and every seat was occupied by Alphas from each pack.Tonight, the missing heiress to the royal family, who had been gone for five years, would officially return to the spotlight.Lucas attended the ceremony with Layla.Over the past month, Mist Pack had suffered devastating losses.Lucas himself had grown noticeably thinner. His eyes looked hollow, his cheekbones were protruding, and he had an unkempt beard. His stomach illness had also worsened, yet no one could brew the herbal soup that eased his pain the way mine always had.For an entire month, he had exhausted every connection he p

Layla suddenly hurried over like she was trying to please him.She held up a pair of matching bracelets."Lucas, look! I made these from Diana's bracelet. Aren't they beautiful?"If we wear them, it'll be like Diana is still with us, won't it?"Lucas looked at the bracelet that had once belonged to me. It was now completely ruined. His gaze then shifted to the Moonstone Pendant around Layla's neck.He suddenly felt a sense of disgust. With a cold expression on his face, he snatched the black kyanite bracelet from Layla's hand and roared, "Who gave you permission to destroy Diana's bracelet?"And take that pendant off. You're not worthy of wearing it!"Layla covered the red mark the chain had left on the back of her neck as tears streamed down her face. With a sob, she turned around and ran away.At that moment, I knew nothing about what was happening back at the pack. The royal family carriage had already carried me into the heavily guarded Royal City.Dad held my hand as I

Layla left the dance floor and gracefully settled onto Lucas' lap. She then wrapped her arms around his neck."Lucas, why aren't you smiling? Are you worried about Diana?"Diana can be so stubborn. But with such a heavy snowfall outside, she's probably hiding somewhere waiting for you to go find her."As she spoke, she rubbed her head affectionately against his shoulder."Don't worry. Someone as tough as her won't freeze to death after just one night out there."Lucas abruptly stood up.Caught off guard, Layla cried out as she tumbled from his lap onto the floor. Tears immediately filled her eyes.Unlike before, Lucas didn't coax her.He didn't even spare her a glance.Instead, he took big strides to the window and stared out into the endless white of the snowstorm. For the past five years, I had never stayed away from him for more than a single night. No matter how cruel his words had been during our arguments, the next morning, I would always appear on time with a bowl of
