Chapter 1

Author: Juicy Dreams
I woke up with a start to the loud sounds of my mother-in-law cleaning. It hit me like a lightning bolt—I had somehow gone back in time.

I grabbed my phone and saw it was the day I got fired over a contract mix-up. It was exactly 5:00 am.

There she was, stepping out of my study—a place I had told her a million times not to enter, especially not to mess with my papers.

She never listened, always doing whatever she wanted without thinking about anyone else.

In my previous life, she sneaked into my study and swapped an important page from a contract I needed with one from a different contract.

I had checked it so many times before, so that morning, I just briefly glanced over it as I was in a hurry.

However, during the signing, the client caught the mistake. They called me a liar right there and then and pulled the plug on our deal. I lost a million-dollar order, and my company blamed me and let me go.

I was so mad that I confronted my mother-in-law. She just cried and said, "I woke up early to clean the study for you. I didn't mean to do it! I'm old and useless, and nobody wants me around. What's the point of living?"

When she started talking like that, my husband, Edwin Williams, would turn into the world's most devoted son.

"Janice, what are you saying? My mom took care of you after you had the baby. She's been cooking and cleaning non-stop, and this is how you treat her? She's old, and she just made a little mistake. Why are you so hard on her? Do you think it's easy for her to take care of us?"

That "little mistake" wrecked my career, and now, my husband was trying to make me feel guilty about it!

I did not even take a break during my maternity leave. I worked so hard to keep my clients happy, and my mother-in-law ruined everything with a careless mistake!

Then, there was my daughter, Teresa.

After I lost my job, Edwin and his mom told me I had to find work fast because his meager paycheck could not cover our bills.

I did not want our little Teresa to have a hard life, so I took a sales job that kept me out from dawn till dusk.

Edwin and his mom refused to hire a nanny, and my own mom had injured her ankle and could not help. However, my mother-in-law promised she would take good care of Teresa, so I let her babysit during the day.

Each morning, I froze milk and left sticky notes with feeding times and tips.

Teresa was such an easy baby, so I thought feedings and diaper changes would be simple enough. Even if my mother-in-law got things mixed up sometimes, she would not mess up with a baby involved, right?

However, I did not know until Teresa ended up in the hospital that my mother-in-law had been dumping my milk and giving Teresa expired formula meant for old folks.

My sister-in-law had bought it for her, but she did not like it and did not want to waste it, so she gave it to a six-month-old baby even though it was out of date.

My mother-in-law was freaking out and called Edwin, but he was too busy gambling with David to bother.Mandy did not find out until she got back from her date. She raced to the hospital. My mother-in-law was still acting the same, sitting on the floor and making a scene with her tears."I just went out to buy some groceries. I didn't know this would happen. You were all out, and I had to watch the kids and cook... It wasn't on purpose."Mandy, who had never taken care of her own kids, got really mad at her mom."Can't you understand anything? Are you out of your mind? I should've sent you to get your head checked! I've told you a million times not to skimp on the heating. How could you not listen? You owe me my children's lives! What am I going to tell David..."The thing she was scared of the most was not being able to explain herself. The Lewis family did not pay much attention to many things, but they sure loved their two grandkids a lot. David was a real piece of work, and

Edwin had no clue where I was and that I had sold the house. When the new owners came to take occupancy, they kicked them right out. Before my mother-in-law moved in with us, she had sold her old place, so then she had to rent.Edwin got a new phone number and called to confront me. "What right did you have to sell the house? Did you ask me first?"I laughed calmly. "Why would I need your permission? My parents bought the house and car, not you."After that, I stopped answering his calls, leaving him powerless.Edwin was jobless, Mandy had moved back in with her two kids, and my mother-in-law's savings were running out fast. She became even more careful with money, trying to make every cent count. The food they ate was the worst. My mother-in-law would pick up the wilted leaves that others had thrown away. To save water, she would not flush the toilet and even reused toilet paper. She even washed and dried Mandy's used sanitary pads for Mandy to use again.Mandy could not bear t

Mandy realized Edwin was not going to help, so she turned to her mom."Mom, just look at what Edwin and his wife are doing to me! Are you just going to watch them destroy my family?"Her mom actually felt sorry for her and looked at me with hopeful eyes.I gave a small smile. "Sure, if you can make up for the jewelry you owe me, we might be able to settle this. But do you have 60 thousand dollars?"When my mother-in-law heard that, her eyes rolled back, and she pretended to faint. She had already spent 15 thousand dollars of her savings, so there was no way she could pay more.Mandy was so mad that she went into early labor. She was rushed to the hospital that night and fortunately, avoided a disaster. Her in-laws never showed up, and David was not picked up by the police from the gambling table until sunrise. She was okay, but David was in deep trouble. David had gambled away everything they owned, so there was no way he could pay back what he owed. In the end, he had to choose

  • The Gap in Our Words   Chapter 7

My usually sweet sister-in-law, Mandy, was on her husband's side, insisting that her own mom and brother pay up.Edwin could not reach me by phone and did not have the cash, so he expected his mom to cover for him.My mother-in-law just plopped down on the floor, crying her eyes out, saying her kids were pushing her to the edge."Oh, my stars! I raised my children all by myself and even helped with the grandkids. Now, they're trying to push me over the edge!"David, the bully, did not care one bit. He roughed up Edwin, saying no money meant paying with his life.My mother-in-law only had one son, so through her tears, she agreed to pay. They could not squeeze the money out of me, so they went after my mother-in-law's life savings.Mandy, after getting her way, said, "Mom, your money is my money. We're family, so why be so formal? Think of it as a little something for your grandson's health. That's your own grandson who you almost hurt. It's only fair to contribute to his well-be

  • The Gap in Our Words   Chapter 6

I stepped in with all the energy I had and gave Mandy two big slaps, just like Mandy had given me but twice as hard."That's your mom you're talking to! If you can't take care of a kid, then why have one? You let someone else watch him instead. And now, you're blaming your mom when she makes a mistake?"Mandy was so shocked by my slaps that she just stared at me with a mean look while people around us started to gossip. She tried to explain, "Do you even know what she did? She cooked meat that had chemicals in it and served it to Jared!"It did not matter what my mother-in-law did. What mattered was that Mandy should be kind and respectful! When I lost my Teresa, did Mandy not just say mean things and hurt me more? Now that it was happening to her, why could she not deal with it?She once got some milk powder for her mom, and when it expired, she told my mother-in-law to give it to Teresa. If my mother-in-law was clueless and bad, then my sister-in-law was just plain mean and n

  • The Gap in Our Words   Chapter 5

Edwin got so tired of me asking him to work that he just started hanging out and playing cards while supposedly working. His paycheck? It was exactly 1,200 dollars, the same amount I gave his mom for her expenses. Hence, she could not help Mandy anymore.Mandy was fed up. Her husband was a gambler and offered no help at all, and she was expecting another baby. They really needed the extra 1,050 dollars each month, and without it, they were struggling. When her husband did not win any money, he would take it out on her.So Mandy, with her little one in tow, moved into my place with tears streaming down her face. She thought she might get some extra help, plus free meals. Edwin and his mom only talked to me about it after they were already settling in. Watching the six-year-old bouncing on my couch and my sister-in-law using my pajamas and skincare, I just said yes. A family in trouble should stick together, right? They were surprised I was so easygoing this time, and they started
