NOAH’S POV

Four hours on the road. Four hours of watching the flat, gray highway lines get swallowed up by the front bumper. Most of the guys were out cold, their massive frames twisted into impossible angles across the double seats. Ethan was two rows ahead of me, his massive leg brace propped up on a duffel bag, snoring softly with his cap pulled over his eyes.

I couldn't sleep. My neck was stiff, my knees were cramped, and my eyes kept burning every time I looked toward the front of the bus.

  • The Girl He Never Knew    Chapter 110: The End????

The letter sat on the kitchen counter in the late afternoon light, folded once, Noah’s handwriting across the page. He had written it that morning while Elena was at the outlet filing a piece on the city’s new community sports grant. He had not planned the letter. It had simply arrived in him the way certain truths did now, without the old resistance, asking only to be set down. The words came without the heat of accusation or the need for a reply. When he finished he folded the page and left it there. Elena found it when she came home. She set her bag down by the door, toed off her shoes, and saw the paper lying in the center of the counter where they usually dropped mail and keys. She looked at him where he stood by the window. He nodded once. Permission enough. She picked up the letter and read it. The letter was not long. It did not beg or accuse. It simply named the complicated shape of what Lora had been. I DON’T KNOW IF WHAT YOU DID WAS LOVE OR SOMETHING THAT WORE LOVE’S F

  • The Girl He Never Knew    Chapter 109: Rewriting Our Own Beginning

ELENA’S POVThe call came on a Tuesday morning. I was in the kitchen of the new apartment, barefoot on the cool floor, watching the skyline through the wide windows when Noah’s phone lit up on the counter. He answered it with the short tone he used for numbers he did not immediately recognize. Then his face changed not into grief, it was if someone had set a fragile object in his hands and asked him not to drop it. He listened for less than a minute. He said “Okay. Thank you for calling.” He hung up and set the phone face-down on the counter. I waited. “He’s gone,” Noah said finally. His voice was flat. “My stepfather. He's dead. It happened last night and the call was from a rehab facility.” I did not reach for him immediately. I had learned, over the long months of recovery and rebuilding, when to step forward and when to let him find the distance he needed. He stood with his hands braced on the edge of the counter, his head slightly bowed. “I’m going to sit with it,” he said.

  • The Girl He Never Knew    Chapter 108: The Next Lebron James

NOAH'S POVI sat in a dark suit that still felt like it belonged to someone else, the brace gone now, the thin white scar along my left forearm the only visible reminder of that night. The final game performance—the championship night when the scouts filled the second row and the floor felt like the only honest thing left in the world—had been enough. They had seen what they needed to see. The work, the film, the interviews, the long road through every version of the nightmare.Around me other prospects shifted in their chairs, families whispering, agents checking phones. I kept my hands still on my knees.A producer touched my shoulder. They called my name. For a fraction of a second the noise of the green room dropped away and there was only the beginning of the life I had been building toward through every locked door and wrong direction.I stood. The walk to the stage was longer and shorter than I expected. The commissioner waited with the hat and the handshake and a smile. I put

  • The Girl He Never Knew    Chapter 107: Yay! It's My Graduation

ELENA’S POV The morning of graduation arrived with no attempt to match the size of the day. I stood in the staging area behind the outdoor platform in a black gown that still smelled faintly of the plastic bag it had come in, the mortarboard balanced carefully so it would not crush the curl I had given up trying to tame. Around me the rest of the graduating class moved in restless clusters—adjusting cords, checking phones, laughing too loudly at jokes that were mostly nerves. Someone’s parent called a name from the spectator side of the barrier. Someone else practiced the walk in place, one hand out as if already receiving the degree folder. I kept my hands at my sides and breathed. Seven years earlier I had sat in a different room and waited for an outcome that would rewrite the clean version of my future. I had walked out of that room with a record and a reputation and a silence I carried like a second spine. The years between that night and this morning had been a long, uneven

  • The Girl He Never Knew    Chapter 106: "I Got Picked"

NOAH'S POV Elena sat in the same chair she had occupied through the night, only now she was fully awake, knees drawn up, one of my hoodies pulled over the clothes she had been wearing since the incident. She had refused to leave my side since. My forearm rested elevated on the foam wedge, the clean bandage stark against the skin. The dull throb had settled into something manageable. The IV was gone. “I’m so sorry I didn’t believe you,” I turned to her. The sentence came out clean. I let the full weight of it sit in the space between the bed and the chair. Elena looked at me for a long moment. Her eyes were clear and tired. “You believed the evidence you had,” she implied. “So did I, when it came to the messages. We were both used.” The generosity of it landed harder than any accusation could have. “That’s very generous,” I said. A faint smirk touched her mouth. “I’m a very generous person.” I reached across with my uninjured hand, caught her fingers, and pulled them up to my

  • The Girl He Never Knew    Chapter 105: He Loves Me

ELENA’S POV I was awake. I had been awake since. The apology, then the second apology, smaller. And then the three words I had stopped allowing myself to expect in forever. I LOVE YOU, ELENA VOSS. He said them as if testing the air. He said them again, quieter, as if the repetition might make the fact settle more permanently into the room. I kept my eyes closed a little longer. Not to deceive him. Only to hold the weight of the words inside my own ribs before I had to answer them out loud. They sat there warm and heavy. I had written versions of this moment in the margins of notebooks I never showed anyone. I had imagined it in the dark after the hotel room, after the rain-soaked gas station, after the train station bench when he told me to leave Ridgewood. None of those imagined versions had included the beep of a monitor, the dull chemical smell of antiseptic, or the faint dried smear of his blood still marking my cheekbone. I opened my eyes. Noah was already looking at me.

  • The Girl He Never Knew    Chapter 7: Everything He Left on My Skin

ELENA’S POVI told myself I’d only wait five minutes, but that was an hour ago. Now I was standing in the corridor like a complete idiot, Noah’s varsity jacket folded too neatly in my arms, pretending I had a shred of dignity left. Every time the heavy doors at the end of the hallway groaned open,

  • The Girl He Never Knew    Chapter 6: The Traitor On The Sideline

NOAH'S POV Practice was usually the only thing that could kill the noise in my head. The basketball court was a kingdom of logic: if you put in the work, you got the result. If you hit the apex of your jump, the shot was yours. The ball slapped against my palm as I drove past Marcus. I pivoted, my

  • The Girl He Never Knew    Chapter 5: The Assignment From Hell

ELENA’S POV The lecture hall smelled like damp notebooks and desperation, a scent that was currently doing nothing to inspire my "fresh start." I slid into a seat halfway up the tiered rows, the wood creaking under my weight as students filtered in around me. Behind me, a guy was arguing with his f

  • The Girl He Never Knew    Chapter 4: Lines That Don’t Stay Crossed

NOAH’S POV The penthouse apartment I shared off-campus smelled like a locker a suffocating cocktail of stale sweat, cold takeout, and the undeniable, pungent scent of Jax’s gym socks. I wrinkled my nose as I crossed the threshold. Most times, my teammates were absolute pigs, and tonight, the mess f
