Chapter 1

I slipped and crashed hard off the wall.

My father's voice came from inside the house. "What was that?"

I clamped a hand over my mouth, fighting to stay silent as tears streamed through my fingers.

My mother didn't sound concerned at all. "Probably just a stray cat."

Blood poured from my shin. I lay on the freezing concrete, staring up at the narrow strip of sky overhead.

Only one thought filled my mind.

"I can't accept this... I haven't even had a single chance to truly live, and now I'm going to die. No. I have to survive. No matter what I've become, I still want to live," I muttered.

I spent the entire night lying in that alley.

The next morning, limping on my injured leg, I searched for work nearby.

After dozens of places turned me away, a convenience store finally agreed to hire me.

A week later, the owner paid me my wages.

At last, I could afford to have my badly bandaged leg treated properly at a clinic. I could also buy stronger painkillers, so the stabbing agony from my stomach cancer wouldn't be quite so unbearable when it flared up.

Just when I thought life was finally starting to get a little better, I ran into them while I was working.

"Sophie, tomorrow's the finals. Grab two boxes of chocolate. You'll need the energy before the competition."

My entire body froze.

It was my mother's voice.

I peeked through the gap between the shelves.

My mother had her arm wrapped affectionately around Ava's, her face soft and full of warmth. My father followed behind them with a smile.

Ava was wearing the school uniform that should have been mine. Her hair was tied in a high ponytail, and she looked radiant.

I immediately pulled my cap lower over my face, hunched my shoulders, and hurried back behind the register with my head down.

As I scanned their items, my hands shook so badly that it took three tries before the barcode finally registered.

My mother frowned, but she still didn't recognize me.

After I checked them out, I watched the three of them walk away together as bitterness welled up inside my chest.

Then a box of chocolate slipped out of one of their bags. Without thinking, I picked it up and limped after them as fast as I could.

"Wait! You dropped this..."

They stopped and turned around. The moment they saw me, their expressions changed.

"It's you?" My father immediately stepped back, shielding my mother and Ava behind him. "You followed us all the way from the mountains. What exactly are you trying to do?"

My heart trembled.

I stood there helplessly, clutching the box of chocolate. "N-No... I was just..."

My mother's face turned cold, her eyes filling with disgust. "You lunatic! Why won't you leave us alone? Our Sophie has absolutely nothing to do with you. If you keep harassing us, we won't go easy on you!"

Leaning against my mother's shoulder, Ava shot me a smug, taunting smile.

My heart felt as though it were being sliced apart. "Mom... I wasn't—"

My mother's face instantly flushed crimson. "Who gave you permission to call me 'Mom'? Shut your mouth!"

As more and more people gathered around, my mother glanced at me before suddenly charging over.

She shoved me to the ground and shouted at the top of her lungs, "Everyone, come look! This convenience store employee is stealing!"

But after only a dozen barefoot steps, my mother was already in too much pain to go any farther.Years ago, I had crossed this same road with a body covered in injuries and ravaged by illness. I had walked through the entire night. When they arrived at the farmers' house, the pigsty had already been sealed off. The moment the door opened, the damp stench of rot poured out.My mother had barely stepped inside before she doubled over and retched against the wall.A straw mat lay in the corner. Dark stains of dried blood still marked its surface. Beside the wall sat a chipped bowl. It was the bowl I had used for every meal during those five years. My father slowly crouched down. The moment his fingers touched the straw mat, his whole body began to shake. "She... slept here?"One of the villagers sighed. "When the pain got really bad at night, she'd curl up right there. Sometimes she'd hold her books and recite her lessons, saying that as long as she ranked No. 1, her parents would c

Vinny turned to my mother. For a brief moment, disbelief flashed across his face. "You're her mother?"My mother desperately clutched his sleeve, her eyes red as she nodded over and over. "Yes... I am! I'm Sophie's mother! She wasn't an unidentified body. She had a family. She had parents..."Vinny remained silent for a few seconds before his voice turned cold. "But both times you called the police, you described her as a lunatic. The first time, you accused her of theft. The second time, you accused her of breaking into your home to rob you."And just now, right here, you insisted she deliberately killed herself in your house just to burden your family."He fixed her with a hard stare, emphasizing every word. "And now you're telling me she's your daughter? Do you think this is some kind of joke?"The color slowly drained from my mother's face. She opened her mouth, but no words came.Every accusation had come from her own lips. Now every one of them had become a blade turned bac

My parents stood rooted to the spot, unable to say a word. The anger had not fully faded from my mother's face, but her eyes had already clouded with confusion. It was as though she hadn't understood the farmer's wife's words. Or perhaps she was too afraid to understand them.Everyone in the lobby stared at her. An eerie silence settled over the room.Just then, the forensic examiner hurried past carrying a file.As he walked, he said to another staff member, "Get this to Captain Hoult. The preliminary autopsy report is ready."My mother whipped around. In that instant, it was as though she'd found her last lifeline. As long as the report didn't mention stomach cancer, as long as it proved I'd taken my own life deliberately, she could still convince herself she'd done nothing wrong. She rushed over, snatched the report from the examiner's hands, and flipped it open.[Long-term malnutrition. Multiple old injuries. Severe gastric disease.Cause of death: Late-stage stomach cancer,

I floated in front of my mother, looking into her bloodshot eyes as my heart slowly shattered. So this was the first thing she thought of after I died. Not that I'd suffered. Not that I'd been wronged. Only that my death would become a burden to her.I lowered my gaze to my body beneath the white sheet. All at once, exhaustion washed over me. "Mom... Dad... This time, you've finally gotten what you wanted. I'll never call you Mom and Dad again. And I'll never beg you to take me home."Vinny was clearly taken aback by my mother's outburst.Frowning, he said, "Ma'am, please calm down. We still haven't confirmed the deceased's identity or cause of death. You're interfering with our investigation."After my body was taken away, Vinny closed his notebook and looked at them. "This case requires further investigation. We'd like your entire family to come to the station and assist with our inquiries."My mother answered immediately, "We'll cooperate. But Sophie has her finals tomorrow.

The moment the police officer finished speaking, everyone rushed over. The expression of the police captain, Vinny Hoult, changed instantly. "Move aside! Get her out of there, now!"My parents rushed into the kitchen as well. The refrigerator door stood wide open, its cold white light spilling over my body.I lay half-collapsed on the floor, my face as pale as paper. Even then, my hand still clutched the unfinished piece of cherry cake.My mother took one look at me, and her expression darkened completely."You lunatic!" Her voice was shrill and piercing. "You were hiding in the refrigerator! Were you waiting for a chance to get revenge on us?"I floated beside her, staring at her blankly. "Mom... I wasn't. My stomach hurt so badly. I only wanted a sip of water."But she couldn't hear me.As if consumed by rage, she rushed forward and kicked my body with all her strength. My body rolled onto its side. The police officer beside her immediately stepped in and pulled her back.

My father's expression darkened completely. The disappointment in his eyes as he looked at me was unmistakable. In the end, they walked away hand in hand with Ava, leaving behind only one sentence, "Don't ever let us see you again."The crowd gradually dispersed until I was the only one left.No ID, no job, no money, and no home. The only way I could survive was by digging through trash cans for food: half-eaten bread, spoiled boxed meals, even dog food that no one wanted.I crouched where the streetlights couldn't reach, stuffing each bite into my mouth. My stomach felt as though a dull blade were slowly grinding through it until it drew blood. Whenever the pain became unbearable, I'd curl into a ball with my arms wrapped around my knees.I could almost hear my mother's voice repeating the words she'd always told me, "If you don't study hard, you'll end up picking through garbage for a living."I lowered my head and stared at the filthy pieces of bread resting in my palm.A bi
