Chapter 9

Author: Crayon Not-Shin
"If you think it's too hard, you can always find another tutor."

"No, no, no!" Tyler hurriedly grabbed the study plan and hugged it to his chest. "I like strict teachers like you! My last tutor was way too gentle. She believed everything I said."

From the kitchen, Mrs. Carter poked her head out with a laugh.

"Stella, don't go easy on him. If he deserves to be yelled at, yell at him."

Tyler groaned dramatically.

"Mom, are you seriously my biological mother?"

I couldn't help laughing.

"If you think it's too hard, you can always find another tutor.""No, no, no!" Tyler hurriedly grabbed the study plan and hugged it to his chest. "I like strict teachers like you! My last tutor was way too gentle. She believed everything I said."From the kitchen, Mrs. Carter poked her head out with a laugh."Stella, don't go easy on him. If he deserves to be yelled at, yell at him."Tyler groaned dramatically."Mom, are you seriously my biological mother?"I couldn't help laughing.A real laugh. The first genuine one I'd had in days.At the end of August, I officially moved into Northbridge University early. The admissions office helped arrange temporary housing for me and even found me a work-study position at the campus library.Seventeen dollars an hour.It wasn't much, but it was enough for me to support myself. On the day of orientation, I stood on the wide green lawn at Northbridge, staring up at the blue sky and drifting white clouds overhead.Everything felt stra

Overnight, her social media account gained 50,000 new followers. Every single one of them came just to mock her. The comments under her old "study with me" videos were especially brutal."Checking in to copy your cousin's test papers again?""Can you teach us how to fake report cards, too?""Please drop the tutorial."But the final blow came from someone claiming to be Naomi's classmate."I'm Naomi's classmate. She never studied in school. She spent all day on her phone during class and constantly skipped homework."Sometimes she'd get super nervous. Later, we realized it was because her cousin wasn't assigned to the same exam room, so she couldn't copy off her."During the university entrance exams, she completely panicked because her cousin was testing at another school."As for the admission ticket? Everyone in our class knows Naomi lost it herself. After the first subject she said she couldn't find it anymore, but later she found it inside a compartment in her own backpack.

I paused briefly. "From today onward, I denounce this family."Then I hung up. This time, I blocked Cameron's number, too.Things spiraled far faster than I'd expected. That very night, the article got reposted onto other social media. The hashtag #HighScorerAndStillTheFamilyVillain shot straight onto the trending charts, climbing as high as number 13 nationwide. The comment section completely exploded."My blood pressure just skyrocketed. What kind of insane family forces their daughter, who scored high, to apologize to a cousin who failed the exams?!""What kind of manipulative witch is Naomi Gibson? She copied her cousin's work for three years, got exposed during the real exams, framed her cousin for hiding her admission ticket, and then claimed her cousin's exam score as her own? I'm actually speechless.""Stella got it the worst. Her whole family treated her like the villain, forced her to kneel and apologize, stole her celebration, and even told her not to wear makeup beca

Overnight, Naomi became a complete laughingstock online. It was far from a minor scandal; it blew up into a disaster. Her comment section exploded. More than 30,000 comments flooded her latest video overnight, and almost every single one was tearing her apart."So your cousin scored high, and you failed, yet somehow she's jealous of YOU? Jealous of what? Your talent for lying?""If my cousin were this excellent, I'd be proud of her. Meanwhile, you're out here accusing her of hiding your admission ticket?""Wait... so you stole your cousin's exam score at HER OWN college acceptance party and pretended it was yours?""What kind of insane family is this?!"Things escalated even further when several local influencers reposted the intern reporter's article. One education-focused creator even uploaded an entire breakdown video titled: "It Wasn't Just an Admission Ticket That Was Stolen".The video passed a million views overnight. The top comment read: "I feel terrible for Stella Mo

"Don't be shy. Just make yourself at home."I sat at the dining table, staring at the spread of food in front of me.Ruby was laughing as she fought her aunt over the last braised rib while Mr. Carter carefully ladled soup into Mrs. Carter's bowl.Suddenly, my eyes started burning. So this was what a normal family looked like.No passive-aggressive comments or favoritism. No one person was constantly sacrificing while another endlessly took and took. After dinner, Mrs. Carter showed me the room they'd prepared for me.The space was modest, yet a south-facing window allowed the sun to drench the desk in light. I noticed the crisp, new linens and the daisy-shaped cushion resting on the pillow."I'm not sure if you like this color," Mrs. Carter said softly. "If you don't, I'll take you shopping tomorrow, and we'll change everything."I shook my head quickly, my voice rough with emotion. "I like it. I really like it."Mrs. Carter gently patted my shoulder. "Then get some rest. To

I didn't reply.A few seconds later, Cameron sent another message. "Just rejoin the group already. Stop making things difficult for Naomi. She thinks you left because you're mad at her, and she's been crying nonstop."I stared at the message for three seconds, then I deleted Cameron from my contacts, too.Ruby glanced at my screen from beside me and lowered her voice. "You okay?""I'm fine." I slipped my phone back into my pocket and leaned against the car window, watching rows of sycamore trees blur past outside. When we arrived at the train station, Mr. Hayes helped carry my suitcase out of the trunk while Mrs. Hayes quietly pressed an envelope into my hands."Stella, this is just a little something from me. Use it when you get to Kingsley City and start looking for a place."I opened it. There had to be at least $5,000 inside. "Mrs. Hayes, I can't take this—""Please take it." She pressed my hand firmly, her eyes already starting to tear up. "You spent six months tutoring Ru
