25. Rachael.

A few days had passed since that accident and security had been tight. Sarah was in my room one morning and she waited as I got ready for our training exercise. I had already put on my track trousers and was surprised to find her still in her maid's uniform.

"You are taking it quite easy today." I sat on the bed and rubbed a towel on my wet head. "The usual Sarah would already be in her training uniforms."

"Well, maybe I'm taking it easy, my lady." A large smile escaped her lips.

"You seem pretty happy today—not that it's a problem, but I've never really seen you in such a good mood," I said shakily.

Sarah gasped mockingly and placed a hand on her chest. "It hurts me that you still think of me as an emotionless aide."

I shrugged. "Well, I can't lie that you give off that impression."

"Hmm, is that true?" She placed a finger on her mouth.

I didn't say anything on that subject again as I got to my feet. I found it strange that Sarah was the one teasing me today. Someth

    51. Ethan. "Rutherford did what?!" I adjusted my earpiece, but I didn't hear my brother well. "Look, get your ass down here and get ready to welcome Rutherford. He heard about the attack and is on his way," Nathan's voice came clean. What the hell was that fat man thinking? The line went dead and I removed my hand from my ear. The elevator dinged, the door slid open and health workers were surprised to see me using the normal elevator. "My lord! What a surprise, you are here!""Thank the Goddess our young Lord is fine! Glory be to her!" A woman held her hands together in prayer. "Thank you, thank you very much. Also thanks for the prayers and the good work, we need you now more than ever." I encouraged them as I left the scene immediately. A black car waited for me at the exit, and I jogged to it. "Status report?" I said as I got in. Chekov was at the front, with another man from my special team who was at the wheel. "Nothing my lord. I just got an important update that the alp

    50. Rachael "Please strap in, my lady," the paramedic advised. She wasn't that old, maybe in her early thirties. She showed me a seat in the ambulance. "It's alright. I can watch over her like this." I insisted. The van shook a little but I steadied myself by holding the walls."My lady, I meant to sit down. You don't want to hit your head against the metal," she explained further. I accepted the offer and sat down on a vacant chair. Sarah had been given mild pain meds and there was a large amount of fluids, replenishing her body. The ambulance arrived at the hospital, which turned out to be the institute where I had gone recently with Ethan. The medical team waited at the entrance with a stretcher and they moved her away faster than I could catch up. They entered an elevator, which I caught in the nick of time. We arrived on the fourth floor, and she was moved straight to the emergency room. I attempted to follow but the nurses stopped me. "My lady, sit back. We've got it from

    49. Ethan. I bent over the rubble, examining a portrait that had fallen face-first against the ground, and talked into my earpiece. "Any luck with taking the rogues prisoner?" I picked up the portrait and hissed, it was a piece from the one that displayed our pack's insignia. "No, my lord. We were going under heavy fire, and we might have gone out a little too hard." The captain of the second squad spoke. I could just imagine the heavy creases on her face. "Understandable." I got on my feet and sighed. It was going to cost a fortune to rebuild, but the real problem was getting back the rare portraits and ornaments that were destroyed. "Assemble the rest of the guys, get some rest. I will see you when I'm done," I said. "Yes, my lord." I ended it and stepped outside. A lot of guards, mostly the common guards walked over the place with the police and some of our forces. I felt a breeze in my chest, and I realised my jacket was still open. I zipped up and continued walking until I s

    48. Rachael. A werewolf, covered in jet black fur in some areas except for the head, which had white fur. It was almost humanoid, except for an increased muscle mass and elongated snout just like a wolf. I recognised Ethan in an instant, but he was different. He was very angry, and I could sense his blood lust. Ethan had left forward, his claws out to reach the enemy but the rogue was very smart. He quickly grabbed me and used me as a cover. Ethan suddenly held back his attack and held his ground. "That's fucking right young pup! If you try anything stupid, I will snap her fucking neck!" The rogue snickered boldly. "You will regret that if you do it." Ethan's voice carried a dark threat. I could almost picture what he meant. I took the initiative to act and started kicking the rogue furiously. "Leave me, the fuck alone!" I screamed and punched, but it only prompted him to tighten his grip on my hair and the back of my neck, which hurt. "Oh, don't you act funny with me!" He slow

    47. Ethan. 20 MINUTES EARLIER. I peered over the broken walls to assess the situation. It was hard to see more than ten meters in any direction because of the unsettled dust. And there was the occasional sound of gunfire around us, with silver bullets, which was a problem for werewolves. I moved away from the wall, keeping my head in a constant swivel. Chekov had gone out for a while to gather our remaining men. It had just been five minutes since he left, an hour since the attack began and there was no use. It was safe to say at this point, a section of the main building in the castle had been blown away. It was just shy of the living quarters of the maids, which gave some relief. The ceiling above me seemed unstable like the first floor would come crashing down with all that damage. My communicator chirped and I held it to my ears. I looked for cover so that I wouldn't be vulnerable in all that ruin. "Speak to me, Chekov.""Sire, Squad One and I are making our way to you. The

    46. Rachael. Suddenly, we were running through corridors and opening doors, trying to put some distance between us and the enemy. It must have been the rush of adrenaline, but Sarah had been running perfectly fine for like ten seconds before she relapsed, and stubborn me, as usual, refused to let her stay behind. "This is pointless, I'm holding you back! Leave!" Sarah yelled. She kept staring behind us as we waddled away. I could barely answer, my heart was in my mouth. It was a miracle that I still thought about Sarah even as we were tired. "I'm coming for you!" Heavy footsteps echoed behind us. A heavy pang echoed in my chest. I was losing all my strength to fear. I kept wondering what horrors he would do to me and Sarah when he caught up. I had his own injuries to thank too, because if he had been perfectly healthy, I was in real trouble—and Sarah. I started to wish I were born a boy—a man. Maybe I would have been able to go toe to toe with our pursuer. Where was Ethan, where
