Adrian's POV

After I left the private club, I went back to the mall where I'd bought the necklace.

Denise, the sales associate who'd rung me up, recognized me right away. Half an hour earlier I'd taken the gift box from her hands, so happy I could barely hold still. Now the ribbon hadn't even been untied, and I was asking her to take it back.

"Sir, the pendant's engraved on the back. The most we can give you is fifty-six hundred."

I'd saved half a year's salary and paid eight thousand for it.

Handing it back cost me nearly twenty-four hundred dollars.

I made myself nod.

"Do it."

Denise had just picked up the box when Tristan Reed's laugh came from behind me.

"See? I told you he'd return it."

Vivian Ford and everyone from the party had followed me over. They stood around outside the counter like they'd come specifically to watch me make a fool of myself.

Someone lifted a phone and started recording.

"Eight grand on a necklace. Bet he's already picturing the sports car Vivian hands him in return."

"That kind of return on investment, Wall Street should hire him to teach."

"A guy out of a nothing town lands the Ford heiress. You don't pull that off without a plan."

Vivian pressed her lips together.

She'd worn a red dress that night, her long hair falling in loose waves. Standing in that crowd, she was the only thing in the room worth looking at.

There'd been a time when she couldn't stand to hear anyone talk about me that way. She'd hook her arm through mine and defend me, half pouting, half furious on my behalf.

Tonight, she didn't say a word.

Tristan came and stood beside me and gave a small, cold laugh.

"You're all amateurs. A run-of-the-mill gold digger just asks a rich woman for money.

"The sophisticated ones spend a little of their own first, then wait for a chance to look wounded. He gives the gift back, she feels guilty, and the car and the condo follow."

The laughing got louder.

"So that's what a long con looks like."

"No wonder he wouldn't take a single gift for three years. He wasn't after a watch. He was after a seat at the Ford family table."

The second the refund cleared, I turned to go.

Vivian caught the hem of my sleeve.

"Adrian, haven't you made your point?"

She pulled a black card out of her purse and pushed it into my hand.

"I said more than I meant to back there.

"Go buy yourself something you like and stop being angry with me. Please?"

Her voice went soft at the end. Her fingers curled lightly against my palm, the way they always had.

Any other night, that would've been enough. I'd have folded before she finished the sentence.

Tonight it just felt cruel.

Three years together, and I'd never spent a dollar of hers. She still believed everything I felt could be settled with money.

I set the card down on the counter.

"Vivian, we're done."

The smile froze on her face.

Tristan clapped once.

"What did I tell you? Giving the necklace back was the appetizer. The breakup's the main course."

He turned to Vivian, absolutely certain of himself.

"Three years of work and he's one step from marrying into the Ford family. You think he's walking away from that?"

Her friends jumped straight in.

"Vivian, honestly, just marry him and keep him. Otherwise next time it won't be a returned necklace, it'll be him up on a roof somewhere."

Vivian looked at me, and somehow there was hurt in her voice.

"If you want to get married, you can just say so. I never said I wouldn't marry you.

"Why do you have to threaten me with a breakup?"

I pulled my hand back.

"I'm not trying to make you marry me. I don't want to marry you anymore."

She stared at me. The last of the softness went out of her eyes.

"Marry me? With what money? I'm not asking you to pay for any of it, and I think that's pretty generous. I've let you keep up this act without holding it against you. What more do you want?"

I didn't say anything.

She nodded slowly, like I was the one being impossible.

"Fine. Let's see how long the pride holds out."

I left the mall on my own.

I'd barely gotten into the cab when Gerald Harris called.

"The Middle East project's short a man. Three years on site, and you'd fly out the day after tomorrow.

"Conditions over there are rough. You want it?"

I'd turned down two overseas postings for Vivian already.

This time I didn't hesitate.

"I'll take it."

After I hung up, I booked a nine a.m. flight for the morning after next.

Less than two days left in this city. Less than two days left with Vivian.

Vivian's hands froze in the air."I can change.""You've said that before."After the first fake accident, she promised nobody would pull that again. After the second, she said Tristan just talked too much.At the mall, she said she'd only gone too far, and told me to take her card and buy something I liked.Every time, she thought the problem was how she'd said it.Not that she had never once believed me."I'll make a public statement," she said. "I'll tell everyone you were never a gold digger.""I don't need that.""Then I'll stay here with you.""I don't need that either."She finally broke."Then tell me what to do! Adrian, whatever it is, I'll do it.""I told you. Many times."I'd told her those jokes cut deep.I'd told her I didn't want Tristan walking into our home whenever he felt like it.I'd asked her to stop testing us with fake emergencies.I'd told her I was with her for her, not for the money. She never listened to any of it.Now that I had nothing le

The minute Vivian threw him out, Tristan went online with a sob story. He'd only been looking out for his best friend, he said, and now she was dumping all of it on him because she wanted her gold-digging boyfriend back.He finished the post with a selfie of his red eyes.I've done everything a real friend could do.This time, nobody defended him.Vivian released the group-chat history.Every test had started with Tristan. Every time someone thought they'd gone too far, Tristan was the one insisting I was acting. His promise, "If he really walks away, I'll apologize in front of everyone," got screenshotted and passed around everywhere. Then somebody posted the payment records. The whole time he was accusing me of being after her money, Tristan had been asking Vivian for limited-edition sneakers and designer watches, and using her contacts to land jobs. One comment made the rounds. So it isn't gold digging as long as you're not dating her. Good to know.Within half an hour h

Vivian tightened her grip on the phone."I found out the truth about the necklace.""All right.""You saved for six months.""And?"She clearly hadn't expected me to sound so calm."I didn't know at the time.""You didn't know, or you never once thought to find out?"I stood in the corridor outside the project office and watched the sun drop behind a skyline I didn't recognize."Denise was standing right there and the receipt was in my hand. One question would have told you everything."But Tristan called me a gold digger, and you believed him.""He got in my head.""The first time too?"I kept my voice low."He called and said you'd been in an accident. I came through that hospital door in tears, and you were sitting there laughing with them."The second time, my mother was in the hospital with a fever that scared me. I rode five hours to get back to you, and you watched them laugh again."Did Tristan get in your head every single time?"Vivian's breathing went tight.

The first time I applied for an overseas posting, my bags were already packed.Vivian had wrapped her arms around me and pouted."I'm not doing long distance."If you go, I'm taking it to mean you don't want me."I withdrew the application the next day.All that time, she'd believed I stayed because I couldn't give up the comfortable life her money paid for.Vivian slammed both applications down on the table."That first time. Who told him I had a bleeding ulcer?"Tristan's expression flickered."I did. But you'd just had too much to drink and needed your stomach pumped. You went home the same day."He was your boyfriend. Coming back to take care of you is the bare minimum.""And who said his second application was a move to pressure me into buying him a place?""I was just thinking out loud.""You're always just thinking out loud?"Vivian turned on the friends around her."He walked out of an exam and ran to that hospital, and you laughed that he was scared his meal tic

  • The Gold Digger Who Left   Chapter 6

Adrian's POVIt was afternoon locally when I landed.A coworker the company had sent helped with my luggage and grinned at me."Mr. Harris said you turned down two of these before. What made it click this time?"I looked out the car window at streets I'd never seen."There's nothing left back home I can't stand to leave. Makes the decision easy."On the way to the project office, my phone rang.Whoever it was stayed silent for a few seconds before speaking."You made it?"It was Vivian. Her voice was quiet and rough, like she'd been crying."I did.""When are you coming back?"I almost laughed. She hadn't asked if I was all right or how the trip was. She'd just decided I ought to come back."The contract's clear. Three years.""Don't hide behind the contract."She sniffed, and her voice went soft."Adrian, if you want the apartment, take it. If you want to get married, I'll say yes."Just don't leave me here on my own, okay? I don't even care if you are a gold digger.

  • The Gold Digger Who Left   Chapter 5

Third-Person POVVivian stared at the signature for a long time without moving.Tristan tried to slide the contract out from under her hand."Enough. He only did it to scare you."Vivian kept her palm on the paper and looked up."Did what?""It's an international routing with a connection. He knew you'd panic when you saw the contract. If you chase him, he's won."The others nodded along."Nobody takes a three-year posting overnight. Opportunities don't just materialize like that. The contract has to be fake.""Vivian, whoever gives in first loses. That's how it works."Vivian checked her phone.Adrian's flight had been in the air for two hours. The group chat opened a fresh round of betting. Some of them wagered Adrian would turn around during the layover. Others said he'd message Vivian the second he landed.Tristan put down thirteen thousand dollars."He'll contact her before the night's over. Guaranteed."Vivian laid her phone facedown on the table."Then we wait."
