Chapter 3

Autor: Crackling Fireworks
That night, Tristan added me to a group chat.

It was called How Long Can the Gold Digger Last.

There were more than twenty people in it, all friends of Vivian's. The second I appeared, the messages started flying.

I bet he apologizes before midnight.

Midnight's too late. A guy who grew up with nothing isn't throwing away a meal ticket that good.

I say he's on his knees outside her office begging to get back together.

Loser buys late-night food for a month.

Tristan sent a voice message.

"You're all giving him way too much credit.

"Packing the bags, handing back the gifts, that's the standard playbook. A man who actually wanted to leave wouldn't make a production out of it.

"He wants everyone to know, because he wants Vivian to come running."

Somebody asked how he could be so sure.

Tristan laughed.

"How many times do I have to say it? I used to do this for a living.

"A broke guy landing a woman like Vivian is the same as winning the lottery.

"You ever hear of a lottery winner tearing up the ticket instead of cashing it?"

The chat filled with laughing reactions.

Vivian was in the group. She never said anything. She never stopped them either.

I left the chat.

Ten seconds later, Tristan added me back.

Don't run off yet.

Weren't you breaking up with her? Let's see how many days you can keep it up.

Why don't you put money down on what time you crawl back?

I left again.

Half an hour later, an unknown number called.

"Is this Vivian Ford's boyfriend? Ms. Ford's been in a car accident. She's in emergency surgery."

They'd run the exact same play three years ago.

That day I'd been taking a professional licensing exam. When I heard Vivian had been in an accident, I walked out without even turning in my paper and tore across town to the hospital.

I shoved open the door of the hospital room and found a table spread with food and liquor.

They laughed and said the panic on my face proved I was terrified of losing my meal ticket.

The second time, my mother was in the hospital with a dangerous fever. They called again and told me something had happened to Vivian.

I left my mother with a neighbor and rode five hours back on the train.

Another test.

They watched me panic and complimented me on how convincing my acting was.

Vivian curled against me and coaxed me in that sweet voice of hers.

"Don't be angry. They just wanted to see how much you cared about me. I won't let them do it again, okay?"

I forgave her.

Whatever she meant by next time, it never actually arrived.

This time, I answered calmly.

"If somebody needs to sign paperwork, call her family.

"We've broken up."

The line went quiet. Then the laughter exploded.

Tristan took the phone.

"Look at you, catching on. You knew we were testing you.

"But don't think playing cold is going to scare Vivian. A woman worth billions can have any man she wants.

"You lose her and that's it, there's no climbing back out. Give up the act. Everybody here knows exactly what you are."

I hung up.

At dawn, I hauled my luggage to the airport.

Before security, a coworker called me.

"Ms. Ford's assistant just asked me whether you're really taking the overseas posting."

I stopped walking.

"What did you tell her?"

"I didn't get a word out. Some guy next to her said you were bluffing to force a proposal. Ms. Ford heard that and hung up."

I didn't have to ask who.

At eight forty, they called my flight.

I looked back once at the terminal entrance.

Vivian hadn't come.

My phone buzzed. Tristan had sent a video.

Vivian was sitting at the private club with a drink in front of her. Her head was down and her eyes were red.

They were all still waiting for me to cave.

Tristan's voice came from behind the camera.

"Don't cry, Vivian. He's not going anywhere. He's parked somewhere near the airport right now waiting for you to run over and beg.

"You go, and he'll use this breakup on you for the rest of your life."

Vivian lifted her head.

"And if he really goes?"

Tristan didn't hesitate for a second.

"If he can actually walk away, I'll apologize to him in front of everybody."

The video ended.

I turned off my phone screen and walked to the gate.

I didn't want his apology. He could keep it and choke on it.

Vivian's hands froze in the air."I can change.""You've said that before."After the first fake accident, she promised nobody would pull that again. After the second, she said Tristan just talked too much.At the mall, she said she'd only gone too far, and told me to take her card and buy something I liked.Every time, she thought the problem was how she'd said it.Not that she had never once believed me."I'll make a public statement," she said. "I'll tell everyone you were never a gold digger.""I don't need that.""Then I'll stay here with you.""I don't need that either."She finally broke."Then tell me what to do! Adrian, whatever it is, I'll do it.""I told you. Many times."I'd told her those jokes cut deep.I'd told her I didn't want Tristan walking into our home whenever he felt like it.I'd asked her to stop testing us with fake emergencies.I'd told her I was with her for her, not for the money. She never listened to any of it.Now that I had nothing le

The minute Vivian threw him out, Tristan went online with a sob story. He'd only been looking out for his best friend, he said, and now she was dumping all of it on him because she wanted her gold-digging boyfriend back.He finished the post with a selfie of his red eyes.I've done everything a real friend could do.This time, nobody defended him.Vivian released the group-chat history.Every test had started with Tristan. Every time someone thought they'd gone too far, Tristan was the one insisting I was acting. His promise, "If he really walks away, I'll apologize in front of everyone," got screenshotted and passed around everywhere. Then somebody posted the payment records. The whole time he was accusing me of being after her money, Tristan had been asking Vivian for limited-edition sneakers and designer watches, and using her contacts to land jobs. One comment made the rounds. So it isn't gold digging as long as you're not dating her. Good to know.Within half an hour h

Vivian tightened her grip on the phone."I found out the truth about the necklace.""All right.""You saved for six months.""And?"She clearly hadn't expected me to sound so calm."I didn't know at the time.""You didn't know, or you never once thought to find out?"I stood in the corridor outside the project office and watched the sun drop behind a skyline I didn't recognize."Denise was standing right there and the receipt was in my hand. One question would have told you everything."But Tristan called me a gold digger, and you believed him.""He got in my head.""The first time too?"I kept my voice low."He called and said you'd been in an accident. I came through that hospital door in tears, and you were sitting there laughing with them."The second time, my mother was in the hospital with a fever that scared me. I rode five hours to get back to you, and you watched them laugh again."Did Tristan get in your head every single time?"Vivian's breathing went tight.

The first time I applied for an overseas posting, my bags were already packed.Vivian had wrapped her arms around me and pouted."I'm not doing long distance."If you go, I'm taking it to mean you don't want me."I withdrew the application the next day.All that time, she'd believed I stayed because I couldn't give up the comfortable life her money paid for.Vivian slammed both applications down on the table."That first time. Who told him I had a bleeding ulcer?"Tristan's expression flickered."I did. But you'd just had too much to drink and needed your stomach pumped. You went home the same day."He was your boyfriend. Coming back to take care of you is the bare minimum.""And who said his second application was a move to pressure me into buying him a place?""I was just thinking out loud.""You're always just thinking out loud?"Vivian turned on the friends around her."He walked out of an exam and ran to that hospital, and you laughed that he was scared his meal tic

Adrian's POVIt was afternoon locally when I landed.A coworker the company had sent helped with my luggage and grinned at me."Mr. Harris said you turned down two of these before. What made it click this time?"I looked out the car window at streets I'd never seen."There's nothing left back home I can't stand to leave. Makes the decision easy."On the way to the project office, my phone rang.Whoever it was stayed silent for a few seconds before speaking."You made it?"It was Vivian. Her voice was quiet and rough, like she'd been crying."I did.""When are you coming back?"I almost laughed. She hadn't asked if I was all right or how the trip was. She'd just decided I ought to come back."The contract's clear. Three years.""Don't hide behind the contract."She sniffed, and her voice went soft."Adrian, if you want the apartment, take it. If you want to get married, I'll say yes."Just don't leave me here on my own, okay? I don't even care if you are a gold digger.

  • The Gold Digger Who Left   Chapter 5

Third-Person POVVivian stared at the signature for a long time without moving.Tristan tried to slide the contract out from under her hand."Enough. He only did it to scare you."Vivian kept her palm on the paper and looked up."Did what?""It's an international routing with a connection. He knew you'd panic when you saw the contract. If you chase him, he's won."The others nodded along."Nobody takes a three-year posting overnight. Opportunities don't just materialize like that. The contract has to be fake.""Vivian, whoever gives in first loses. That's how it works."Vivian checked her phone.Adrian's flight had been in the air for two hours. The group chat opened a fresh round of betting. Some of them wagered Adrian would turn around during the layover. Others said he'd message Vivian the second he landed.Tristan put down thirteen thousand dollars."He'll contact her before the night's over. Guaranteed."Vivian laid her phone facedown on the table."Then we wait."
