Chapter 4

Autor: Crackling Fireworks
Before heading to the airport, I'd arranged for a courier to take the boxes I'd packed to the Vivian.

Somehow they were taken to the private club. Somebody posted an unboxing video in the group chat.

The scarf, the keychain, and the tie Vivian had given me were all in there, along with the handful of cards she'd written me over the years.

At the bottom was an itemized statement.

For three years I'd written down every dollar Vivian covered on meals, trips, and the time we shared the apartment. After subtracting my share, the balance came to fifteen thousand eight hundred dollars.

I transferred it to her account, every cent.

In the video, someone picked up the statement and doubled over laughing.

"What is this, an invoice? Three years of companionship, itemized?"

"Fifteen grand out of a rich woman in three years. He must feel robbed."

"No wonder he's pretending to move out. He's trying to get Vivian to raise the rate."

Tristan pulled the statement away and skimmed it.

"He made the math this precise so Vivian remembers he gave her three years of his life.

"Wait for it. Next he'll be billing you for the three years. A grown man, doing that."

Vivian sat on the sofa, getting paler with every word.

She looked at the pile of returned things.

"What if he actually wants to break up?"

Tristan burst out laughing.

"Vivian, you really bought the performance?

"What does he make in a month? The second he leaves you, he's paying rent, riding a packed train to work, and going on dates with ordinary women.

"He's had three years of the life your money bought. You think he can go back to that?"

Her friends piled on.

"Vivian, you're just too attached to your charity case."

"He can't find a richer woman out there. He'll crawl back."

"He's probably standing outside the door right now, waiting for you to say you forgive him."

They called my flight again. As I got into line, Vivian's assistant messaged me.

"Mr. Cole, Ms. Ford would like to know when you're coming back."

I didn't reply.

When it was my turn at the gate, Gerald called.

"We've notified the partner firm. Vivian's going to find out soon that you signed for three years.

"You're sure about this?"

I looked down the jet bridge toward the plane.

"I'm sure. This time I'm not turning around."

After I hung up, I opened my messages with Vivian.

Three years, and almost every message was mine. Asking when she'd be home. Reminding her to take her medication. Telling her where I'd put the clean laundry.

Somewhere along the way, a grown man had turned himself into her live-in housekeeper.

The last few dozen messages had gotten the same two words back.

Got it.

I sent the last things I had to say.

Vivian, your friends were right. I'm a very good actor.

I'd had enough a long time ago, and I still spent three years pretending to love you.

The performance is over.

Next time you test me with a car accident or a drunk disappearance or an emergency, nobody's coming.

Her call came in almost instantly.

I didn't answer.

She kept calling, her name jumping onto the screen over and over.

A flight attendant asked me to switch to airplane mode.

The screen finally went quiet.

At the same time, Corinne was delivering my overseas contract to the private club.

Printed there in black and white: three years.

Tristan reached for it, but Vivian got a hand flat on the page before he could.

She stared at my signature, and the color drained out of her face.

This time I wasn't acting.

I was actually gone.

Vivian's hands froze in the air."I can change.""You've said that before."After the first fake accident, she promised nobody would pull that again. After the second, she said Tristan just talked too much.At the mall, she said she'd only gone too far, and told me to take her card and buy something I liked.Every time, she thought the problem was how she'd said it.Not that she had never once believed me."I'll make a public statement," she said. "I'll tell everyone you were never a gold digger.""I don't need that.""Then I'll stay here with you.""I don't need that either."She finally broke."Then tell me what to do! Adrian, whatever it is, I'll do it.""I told you. Many times."I'd told her those jokes cut deep.I'd told her I didn't want Tristan walking into our home whenever he felt like it.I'd asked her to stop testing us with fake emergencies.I'd told her I was with her for her, not for the money. She never listened to any of it.Now that I had nothing le

The minute Vivian threw him out, Tristan went online with a sob story. He'd only been looking out for his best friend, he said, and now she was dumping all of it on him because she wanted her gold-digging boyfriend back.He finished the post with a selfie of his red eyes.I've done everything a real friend could do.This time, nobody defended him.Vivian released the group-chat history.Every test had started with Tristan. Every time someone thought they'd gone too far, Tristan was the one insisting I was acting. His promise, "If he really walks away, I'll apologize in front of everyone," got screenshotted and passed around everywhere. Then somebody posted the payment records. The whole time he was accusing me of being after her money, Tristan had been asking Vivian for limited-edition sneakers and designer watches, and using her contacts to land jobs. One comment made the rounds. So it isn't gold digging as long as you're not dating her. Good to know.Within half an hour h

Vivian tightened her grip on the phone."I found out the truth about the necklace.""All right.""You saved for six months.""And?"She clearly hadn't expected me to sound so calm."I didn't know at the time.""You didn't know, or you never once thought to find out?"I stood in the corridor outside the project office and watched the sun drop behind a skyline I didn't recognize."Denise was standing right there and the receipt was in my hand. One question would have told you everything."But Tristan called me a gold digger, and you believed him.""He got in my head.""The first time too?"I kept my voice low."He called and said you'd been in an accident. I came through that hospital door in tears, and you were sitting there laughing with them."The second time, my mother was in the hospital with a fever that scared me. I rode five hours to get back to you, and you watched them laugh again."Did Tristan get in your head every single time?"Vivian's breathing went tight.

The first time I applied for an overseas posting, my bags were already packed.Vivian had wrapped her arms around me and pouted."I'm not doing long distance."If you go, I'm taking it to mean you don't want me."I withdrew the application the next day.All that time, she'd believed I stayed because I couldn't give up the comfortable life her money paid for.Vivian slammed both applications down on the table."That first time. Who told him I had a bleeding ulcer?"Tristan's expression flickered."I did. But you'd just had too much to drink and needed your stomach pumped. You went home the same day."He was your boyfriend. Coming back to take care of you is the bare minimum.""And who said his second application was a move to pressure me into buying him a place?""I was just thinking out loud.""You're always just thinking out loud?"Vivian turned on the friends around her."He walked out of an exam and ran to that hospital, and you laughed that he was scared his meal tic

Adrian's POVIt was afternoon locally when I landed.A coworker the company had sent helped with my luggage and grinned at me."Mr. Harris said you turned down two of these before. What made it click this time?"I looked out the car window at streets I'd never seen."There's nothing left back home I can't stand to leave. Makes the decision easy."On the way to the project office, my phone rang.Whoever it was stayed silent for a few seconds before speaking."You made it?"It was Vivian. Her voice was quiet and rough, like she'd been crying."I did.""When are you coming back?"I almost laughed. She hadn't asked if I was all right or how the trip was. She'd just decided I ought to come back."The contract's clear. Three years.""Don't hide behind the contract."She sniffed, and her voice went soft."Adrian, if you want the apartment, take it. If you want to get married, I'll say yes."Just don't leave me here on my own, okay? I don't even care if you are a gold digger.

  • The Gold Digger Who Left   Chapter 5

Third-Person POVVivian stared at the signature for a long time without moving.Tristan tried to slide the contract out from under her hand."Enough. He only did it to scare you."Vivian kept her palm on the paper and looked up."Did what?""It's an international routing with a connection. He knew you'd panic when you saw the contract. If you chase him, he's won."The others nodded along."Nobody takes a three-year posting overnight. Opportunities don't just materialize like that. The contract has to be fake.""Vivian, whoever gives in first loses. That's how it works."Vivian checked her phone.Adrian's flight had been in the air for two hours. The group chat opened a fresh round of betting. Some of them wagered Adrian would turn around during the layover. Others said he'd message Vivian the second he landed.Tristan put down thirteen thousand dollars."He'll contact her before the night's over. Guaranteed."Vivian laid her phone facedown on the table."Then we wait."
